Been doing some thinking, is there any aftermarket rear suspensions available that would jack up the bike say, 3"? I have been doing some thinking and plotting out some stuff for a winter project. I am not concerned about the front yet, I believe I got that sorted out  | ||

Isn't raised the rear going to affect the front? I know there are shocks that raise the rear, but nowhere near 3 inches. What are you trying to do? | ||

The Buell race shock, and many race shocks, have a ride height adjustment. That will get the rear end up say maybe one inch at the extreme. But extreme is the right word here. A 3" increase in ride height is going to make the bike almost unrideably twitchy. I wouldn't do it if i were you. | ||

Just toying with the idea of doing something BMC seems to not want to do. It will require a 08 R that I can get cheap, a Ulysses front suspension which I can get cheap on ebay, and some other various bits and pieces. 3" was just a wild guess, I haven't done any actual measuring. This will require a bit of time and money, neither of which are in great supply at the moment for me. | ||

Sweet sir!! How about fabricating a block to fix on the frame of the bike where the shock mounts. The block could offset the shock with the inches needed? | ||

Wouldn't the CR make a better candidate with it's lower gearing? Also I believe it has a longer swingarm than the 1125R so that might help when raising the suspension. Plus, Froggy, you already have a CR so you could start right away.  (Message edited by not_purple_s2 on October 07, 2009) | ||

fresonbuell, jacking the rear only slightly effect the front! it takes about 5mm to effect the other side 1 mm}} the rule of thumb is if your bike is having problems before the Apex adjust the front , after the Apex adjust the rear | ||

Ok I tried to post before, my laptop died on me last second  Andros, that was going to be my backup plan. I would rather do a different spring at least, to give a more cushy ride like the X. Purple, I would be doing it more as a cruiserish thing, so I would rather have the R fairing and gearing. The better fuel economy of the R would be desirable. Also I got other ideas in mind for my little lobster | ||

Frog - if you're keeping the R fairing, why not just keep the stock suspension front and rear and slap a Uly tail on it? | ||

The 1125 Ulysses would be the perfect bike for me, however, I've been assured by inside sources that "it's not in the works". I bought my CR, and with the high bars, Uly pegs and Firebolt touring seat, it's pretty damn comfy. About 80% of what a Uly is. I'd love to have that extra leg room, but the CR is pretty dang good. I can't wait to see what Buell monster Froggy builds. | ||

You could definitely free up several inches of ground clearance by doing some exhaust work, but it won't give you any extra suspension travel. You could replace the stock muffler with a wide thin section of multiple tubes that would flow the exhaust and double as a skid plate. You could also have two exhaust pipes straddle the engine with a skid plate welded in between just below the engine. Picture the width of the engine and a maximum 1" below the engine. The obvious down side is the custom work and having to use a more traditional high rear muffler. | ||

Barker, I backed off the compression on my CR from the recommended setting and it's MUCH better. It was very stiff as recommended. I've got a really good video by Max at Traxxion Dynamics called "Suspension for Mortals" that explains why suspension need not be stiff to work well. Every time I've ever upgraded my suspension, I got better, more controlled handling and a smoother ride. | ||

suspension need not be stiff to work well I totally agree. I had my suspension dialed in by Dave Moss himself at Buttonwillow. Dave actually took lots of preload out of the bike, got the front and back rebound setting synched & lightened up compression so I could get more fork travel. WOrked brilliantly. Haven't touched the setting since. Racetech is ever present, however I haven't seen Dave Moss since. My recommendation is that if you catch him at the track--take advantage! | ||

Ground clearance isn't an issue for me yet. I haven't bottomed out my CR off road yet. If I did change the exhaust, It would be something other than one of those crappy Jardine cans. One tipover and crush! |
