I checked my oil the other day (about 1000 miles on it) and it had an orange tint to it. It looked nothing like the yellow of fresh synthetic oil and I would assume that it should be brown after 1000 miles of solid riding...any ideas? Could coolant be changing the color? I will be taking it to the dealer this week but I was hoping to have some ideas before I talk to them.

Thanks a million!

Fall is coming up, so I'm guessing the colors are changing early : p

synthetics don't darken as fast as conventional oil. I haven't had the oil actually come out really dark any of the times I've changed it so far. Certain colors thou will show up if you have coolant in the oil, but normally the coolant would separate from the oil and would change the smell. Really I believe its probably nothing since its you first 1k service and you are just not familiar with the Syn 3 product, but you could always take a picture of the oil in the sunlight so we could see the color of it. Goodluck.

Sorry I was not clear in my original post...the oil only has 1k on it, the bike is almost at 5k and I have already changed the oil twice. The oil also seems much thinner than it did before. I have not noticed any strange odors from the oil and ridability hasn't changed which makes me skeptical about a crack somewhere. Either way I have never seen oil this color...I am currently using the Syn3 that Buell recommends and it never looked like this during the first two changes.

I still don't know mate....still could be a multitude of reasons why it is a different color. But just saying its orangeish doesn't do much for me. Would have to see it/smell it. Also....what intervals are you changing at if you are doing it with 1k at 5k miles....you just changing it everyone 1k miles?

I change the oil seasonally...start and end of riding season. The oil looked fine about three weeks ago; and by fine I mean yellow-brown and standard consistency. Now it is brown-orange and seems much thinner. There is no strange odor beyond the normal smell of oil. Hopefully the dealer will have a good answer for me when I take it in on Saturday.
