Yep, silly thread. I own 7 Buells (incl the first 1125 in private hands in Europe) I love them all, OK perhaps the XB comes a bit down on the list. My 1125 was in the shop for Warranty stuff so often , I bought a Ducati. They're both very different bikes so it's a pointless comparison - but there's a lot of rubbish talked about the cost of belt and valve service on the Duc.
If I could have only one bike, it would be the best Buell ever built, a late X1
Despite being challenging to live with, my 1125 is a great bike

AVC, Ducatis 'want' a valve CHECK at 7.5k miles - easy to do, no engine rotation. They 'MAY' need adjusting.

Not riding the Ducati 7500/year miles doesn't get you completely out of the maintenance. Ducati has services based on time also.

Agree. Well aware. I have a owners manual with maintenance schedule in my hands.

Wow.

I made a comment saying don't let the maintenance scare you, there isn't that much extra maintenance. You jump on that and start comparing numbers, which is fine by me, yet you conveniently forget to add in some of the Buells services. All I ask is that when comparing, be fair and add up all the Buells services which you didn't do in your numbers comparison.

Here are some more numbers that are supposed to be from Ducati North America, but I don't know that is a fact. Obviously your numbers are higher and other dealers may be also. I don't know if that includes parts, labor or both.

Here is the breakdown according to DNA:

600 mile service - $144.38
7500 mile service - $256.88
15000 mile service - $362.20
after 7500 mile valve service $294.80
after 15000 mile valve service $366.30

add the valve service to the regular service at each interval for a total, ie 7500 mile service should be
256.88 + 294.80 = $551.68 (plus tax) for the 7500 mile service

Just so it's clear, I never said the Ducati scheduled services/maintenance was cheaper.

Sorry Djz for hijacking your thread. I just wanted to comment not to let the maintenance scare you and it's not much extra, but it's gone way past that.

I'm out of this.

I have seen those numbers posted by Ducati. I feel they are misleading. Searching the internet has shown that the $551.68 service cannot be had for that price. Most dealers wanted $1000+ from both internet searching and actually calling them. When I asked Ducati about the discrepancy, they said the dealers were free to set their own costs. This is a bait and switch in my mind and is unfair to a buyer.

Bottom line is this is a BUELL forum...if he wants to know about Ducati ownership he should go to a Ducati forum.

Of course everyone here likes their Buell.

My decision came down to maintenance costs. I did a bunch of research and I was convinced it was going to cost me a fortune to own the Ducati for the amount of riding I do annually. The Buell I could service in my garage with the tools I already owned.

I am sure the S model is amazing, but now we are really at apples and oranges.

Seems to me the the CR1125 is a better comparison to the SF.

My dealer won't even give me a price to do the valve check on my 1125, said something about how noone has done it, and rotating the motor is such a bitch, shop time atleast 6 to 10 hours.

That ain't cheap, gonna probably have to do this one myself.

Your dealer just needs to pull up the book time for the service and multiply that by their hourly rate. If no one has ever done it, I guess they have not been factory trained?

I fully plan on doing it myself, with common hand tools (as long as Torx are considered common).

Fresno, yes! One of my intake valves had to be reshimed. It was close enough, they said they could have let it pass (right on the edge of spec), but swapped the shims just to be safe.

"Seems to me the the CR1125 is a better comparison to the SF"
I can see where DJZ is coming from. Sometimes the bikes that grab our attention, the ones that stay in our mind, aren't necessarily in the same "class" or logically comparable, they're just the ones we like : ) Eg My current wish list bike is one of the following - 1125CR, '08 GSXR750, XB9S, Street Triple R, crossplane R1, Duc Streetfighter and Duc 848. A white 1125R seems to be making it's way back onto the list : )

The Streetfighter would have to be one of the best looking bikes I've seen in a while. I thought they looked ok in the pics, then saw two at the dealer - awesome, mean, angry, sexy looking bike!

Honestly guys....spec sheets, big power, and fancy suspension don't always make a great bike. One of my favorite bikes ever is a KLR650. Underpowered, pogo sticks for suspension, ugly, and cheap.....but riding that bike at 60mph felt like you were going 100mph. It's the only bike I've ever been able to get to the balance point on the rear wheel and shift gears. I didn't care if I dropped it, scratched it, spilled gas on it, or anything. I just rode it. I should have never got rid of that bike. I had it set up the way I liked it. It's one of my regrets.

Here's my beloved KLR. A real streetfighter, curb jumper, fuel efficient "green" mobile, and hooligan bike wheelie machine:

Really? A company with 200 people can out spend Ducati to make a magazine review come out their way?

THAT is rich! : D

FT_bstrd,
if you buy bike magazines, you could notice that in the last 3-4 months, Buell has bought the 2nd and 3rd pages for its advertisement. that costs money my friend.
Buell is investing right now, in the races and in the ads.
I rode both bikes and it's easy to notice the difference in every inch of the bikes, Ducati is a step forward anyone right now. that's why they own the word "Superbike", as their motto says.
I own both bikes (more Buells than Ducatis), I will never sell my Buells, though I will sell my Duc for sure.
but technically speaking, the 1125's are far away from a 1098/Streetfighter...

If buying ad space was all it took to get a good review for Buell, they would have spent the money every year since 2003 to make sure that the reviews went their way.

It's ridiculous to believe their ad expenditures had ANYTHING to do with the outcome of the comparison.

I can guarantee you that EVERY reviewer in that article has panned Buell in a previous review.

Buy whatever makes you have fun and feel confident. I like all brands; owned several; wish I had the money for a Ducati.

I would like to see HD put the Buell in the background in all their commercials, or at least implement the Buell in the ad someway?
Maybe a poster, t-shirt, jacket or something?

Sold both my Ducatis this year, a 1992 907 and a 2007 Monster S4R. I wanted to get away from the need to change the belts every two years, and the small gas tank on the Monster.

But maybe a better comparison with the 1125R would be the Ducati 848.

The street fighter has fueling problems at low rpms, they even mention it in that comparison and it's all over the ducati forums. It should run smooth everywhere for the money.

I know the 1125 has had a few reflashes, but apparently it's not nearly as bad as the ducati in low rpm cruising.

Italian job, I don't know what to say, but stop building fugly buells.

Uh, could it be that the EPA is screwing up the fueling, not the manufacturers? Some are doing better with what they are given to work with, however.

No doubt about that.

Moosestang,
Keep in mind all the Ducati's are setup to meet Euro 3 emission specs (very lean). Even the US ones and Ducati does have a reflash. The Streetfighter just came out some months ago. It is still early in the game. Give it a chance to sort out. The 1125 has had many reflashes, as you stated, since it came out.
