We have several 2008 1125Rs that we will be able to get our hands on and help put folks on them. The 2008s are unique in that there are some known issues that occur with greater regularity on the 2008s vs. the 2009s+.

We are working to train our service staff to do a better job front running these known issues so that we are able to better deliver on our promises.

Our first "Fly and Ride" participant, Jason, unfortunately got bitten with both the rear signal light and speed sensor failure on his way home. We want to make sure that this doesn't get replicated with future deliveries.

Besides the signal lights, speed sensor, most recent flash, brake recall, make sure the other recalls are done, etc., what OTHER things should our guys be looking for?

We are looking to have a checklist for every 2008 1125R that comes through the door (above and beyond the typical PDI we do) to make sure we front run any potential customer issues.

Thanks for your help guys, and thanks for aiding us in doing what we do better and better.

Make DARN sure the breather hose re-route is done, otherwise the bike will be puking gas all over the swingarm which will stain the finish.

A battery tender, "Traction" grips and a set of bar-end weights are all prudent and worthwhile investments for the new owner.

What Indy? The original routing was no where near the swing arm, it was over the front half of the muffler.

I wish mine was still there.

The routing on mine (when I bought it) ran down to the left passenger footpeg. It would spit straight onto the swingarm. When I brought it in for the clutch-weep issue, I asked them to take a look at it. They drilled a hole in the tip of the footpeg mount and routed the hose through it, aiming it away from the swingarm. I don't know if it's an "official" Buell fix, but it does the job.

Yours was half fixed when u bought it. The original routing was a few inches in front of the clutch cover. I liked it better there cuz now removing the pass pegs is gonna be a pain figuring out what to do with the vent line.

Ft_bstrd,

Your list up top did not include the clutch weep issue, common on many of the 2008 models. That's one that many people complain about.

Look for fluid draining out of the weep hole under the clutch cover puck, right side of the engine. The fix for that, however, is upgrading all the parts - including the clutch cover to the Rev. B cover, as well as the newest internal setup. Search "revision C" clutch cover for parts list.

Also, check to see if there is condensation in the instrument cluster - may need to be replaced with an '09 unit.

A few things for the setup:
- Check the oil level to make sure it is at 3 quarts. My dealer overfilled mine by a quart since they were not familiar with the oil level check procedure
- Make sure the battery is fully charged. Leaving the ignition on for just a few minutes will deplete the battery. Use a real charger not a trickle charger.
- Give your customer a printout of the ECU program version to assure yourselves and the customer that the most current update has been applied
- Inspect the lower belt guard. If it is closer than 1/16" inch of the belt, put a washer behind the lower guard at the bolt attach point to bring it out and away from the belt
- In the event the tech has taken off the airbox and baseplate for some reason, make sure the:
a) Cables are routed properly and not binding
b) The Baro sensor is facing the right way
c) Return hose to the throttlebody has not been routed incorrectly and is interfering with throttle cables
d) Inspect the fuel rail to make sure it was not damaged by removing the baseplate

I'm sure there's more and I'll append if I can think of it.

I also think that the following points should be covered in a conversation with the new owner at delivery:

- Start only by pushing the start button and DO NOT touch the throttle until the motor is warmed up
- Turn the bike off by first using the kill switch and then turning the ignition off (this helps avoiding the parasitic draw in older clusters)
- Give them a tutorial on bedding the brakes in properly to avoid warped disks and buildup causing pulsation
- Might as well discuss the rear brake and why it is "weak"
- Go over the oil checking procedure (cold and hot)

Hope that helps

The clutch shaft 5th gear plug (RECALL).
* Remove slack in throttle cables
* lubricate throttle body linkages
* verify vent hose in breather box right side is not binding the throttle linkage
* verify Volt Reg and battery grnd cables are tight and not just bottomed out on too long of bolt
* verify battery cables are torqued properly
* make sure battery is charged and,
* suspension set up for the rider's weight.

BTW, Bumpus Techs did my vent like Indy's, down the bottom of the footpeg support.

Having a stock of Uly and "s" pegs along with a few "solenoid" plugs would give them a warmer, fuzzier feeling (IMHO).

If you want to be pro-active on clutch leaks, start ordering up the kits. p/n X2086.1AM if you can. Keep some on hand for your local customers, and for your “Fly & Ride” customers keep another stash you can ship them “as needed.”

As part of PP 0504 (Dipstick, sidestand spring & fuel vent line re-route) make sure the vent line is pointing away from the bike as noted above.

Pre-work the gas cap. Lube it & cycle the key through it a few times so it's not so tight upon initial delivery.

While all of this is being done, you could make sure the ECM's have the latest flash, M3HUS05Z.

Check & re-check the rear turn signals up until the point the customer leaves. Same as with the kits for the clutch, p/n Y0527.1AM for the rear turn signals. Keep a supply on hand for local & your “Fly & Ride” customers.

Last but not least, make sure the batteries are fully charged (put 'em on a tender the night b4 the new customer flies in.) These bikes seem to be very sensitive to how well the battery is charged.

These are just some suggestions off the top of my head, so if they help, great.

There are a lot of other very good suggestions already here as well.

On a side note, I still don't have the "recalls" that were performed on my bike. So I am unaware of what was done to it or what was not done to it.

So the person who posted about a print out, that would be very helpful. I have asked, but nothing yet. The thing I am most worried about is the cam chain tensioner recall.

Yea as Jeremy said, if it could go wrong, it went wrong with me so maybe my torture will be the next buyers success.....

Jpowell.. You got an 08 1125R, right? There was not cam chain tensioner recall on them. If that is what you got. You're good to go.

Badlionsfan, if you want to remove your passenger pegs after the line has been re-routed, why not use a clamp and attach it to one of the passenger peg assembly mounting points?

Something like this:

clamp

>>>Check & re-check the rear turn signals up until the point the customer leaves.

Better yet, simply open one of the turn signals (I posted photos and detailed descriptions of the "right" and "wrong" ones) and if it has the bad one, replace it.

It's nice having this consolidated "Body of Knowledge" for the 2008. The issues are all easy to address and the consensus is that the resulting product is an AWESOME bike.

Here are ALL THE RECALLS on the 2008 Buell 1125R.

Note that the first recall effects 1,579 bikes and the 2nd only 140. There is typically more misinformation about recalls than accurate information.

With regard to the paperwork, the provided paperwork would typically be a work order from your dealer, there is no "factory print out" or anything like that.

If the bike has been around for a LONG time, make sure that no one has folded in the mirrors, thinking that to do so would be a non-issue. Here's a photo below of when I was picking mine up. I saw the mirrors. I didn't say anything, hoping it would be okay. I was wrong and that was one more reason why I had to bring the bike back.

Not to worry . . .falls in the same category as "Buell and recalls" . . . . . much more smoke than fire. It's not unlike the "friend of a former rommmates cousin's guru told me there was a new flash" chatter.

Sometime, when you are needing some great entertainment . . pursue the recalls database . . . you'll be thrilled to have a Buell.

Be careful on that ride back oldog, you will be instantly hooked on the buell. Jeremy and Tom are good guys, I am sure they will take good care of you.

Not sure out of the 20 or so bikes I have owned that I like any as much as my Buell.

Not sure your history of bikes , but the buell takes a bit of getting used to, but what a machine.

I've got my 1125 ready to ride up to the shop to get Jeremy a RAM mount someone needs to borrow for a Fly and Ride deal.

That's just another "service" Bumpus has to offer. They don't sell the mounts, but Jeremy called to tell me that a customer needed one and would return it when he got home.

I'm more than happy to help. Just have to pull it off my Ulysses and ride up to Bumpus in the morning.

Superior customer service is more work upfront, but easier in the long run than dealing with unhappy customers. I know Tom and Jeremy want to do things right.

We are in the process of working a deal with one of your fellow Texans right now.

You're missing my point. I don't wanna fly if I don't have to. I'd rather just cruise up the road a couple miles. It'd be nice to have a dealer that "gets it" locally & doesn't have to be regularly "retrained" on Buell.

Now to figure out how to get some of your roads here....

The rear brake pivot is known to bind on some bikes. Mine had a cheap Top Hat plastic bush in it and I trashed a set of rear pads.
It now has a home made phos bronze bush and lube nipple fitted.
