First off we have been lurking around this board for a while now and it is full of great ideas and suggestions. Now here is our problem, we are true privateers preparing to race in the South Africa BoTT class. The bike is still in the testing and tuning phase and plan to be competition ready for the 2010 season. With Buell now releasing true racing parts for the privateers we would like to be able to use them on our bike. I have gone through the list on the website but the South African sanctioning body isn't listed. Does anyone know how to get them recognized? Our local HD/Buell dealer isn't so helpful with parts as they are planning to import a 1125RR to compete against us. Does anyone know if once your a registered and recognized Buell if you can order direct or if you will always have to go through the dealer?

Thanks Pizza couldn't find his email address only a postal address but did find an email address in the racing catalog, guess we can start there. We are really excited about campaigning this bike as it will be the first Buell to race in this series that has been dominated over here by the Ducatis. Our last track day at Kyalami we were showing lap times in the midst of the Ducatis, all this with home made parts so far.

and thats good to hear that your making headway in your area for buells!!

i should be so lucky for west coast US amateur racing.

Blake edited to remove Mr. Duga's email address from public/spambot view. Please don't ever post email addresses of others on a public forum.

Based upon what I have read, that doesn't seem likely. The 1125RR is slated only for racers in AMA Superbike. That per the press release anyway. Buell certainly have the right to change their policy on that.

I think They designed it to compete in AMA, but I'm sure buell would sell an RR to anyone with a license and a checkbook

From the Buell press release:

quote:

Buell will produce a limited number of 1125RR motorcycles for sale only to licensed professional road racers who will compete in the AMA Pro Racing American Superbike class.

I heard, second hand, of a aspiring wera racer buying a 1125RR. It is his fist attempt at any sort of racing he just wanted to run in wera to try out racing.

Just be advised that Henry's been out all this week - if you don't hear from him right away, don't worry. He's good at getting in touch.

OFFICIALLY, they only support certain racing organizations but I know for a FACT that overseas organizations ARE supported - you just have to give Duga some references to validate that the stuff will be used for RACING with a "known" race organization - and not just cheated onto the street.

Shoot him an email. Give him a few days til he's back.

I think we have everything we would need to validate that this is a pure race Buell, including the racing license and VIN registration with our governing race body.

The information about the dealership purchasing a 1125RR was from an employee of the local dealership, not from the owners or parts manager etc, so it is still hearsay at the moment.

If it's anything like what is done for some of us in "remote" areas of the USA, What you'll end up doing is having your sponsoring dealer send in the forms since you can't order directly from Buell Racing but have to have all stuff sent TO a dealer FROM Buell racing.

All the forms are available on Buell.com site under the Racing section.

If you have a good working relationship with your dealer - you can directly order from Buell Racing - but you have to PAY the dealer since it's the dealer who will be billed.

Sounds like a really cool thing - you gotta keep us posted on your racing in the RSA!

Mark:

Do you know Tommy at the Buell dealership in Johannesburg?

I was involved in an effort to take a group of Ulysses from Cairo to Cape Town and spoke to him when they were building the new store.

I suspect you'll find Henry very helpful.

Complete shake up at HD/Buell in Joburg. Almost positive that Tommy is gone.

Did you ever do the Cairo to Cape Town trip?

We used to have a good relationship with the previous owners, just not getting that warm fuzzy feeling now.

>>>Did you ever do the Cairo to Cape Town trip?

No. It was being organized by a couple businessmen/adventurers in Dubai. I haven't spoken to them in a while. We were working on making some fairly significant mods. It was, as you know, getting darn challenging with the logistics and the politics. The guy who was driving the effort may have just tossed in the towel.

Wasn't the store in Joburg just built? Shake ups are going on everywhere . . . I've recently seen a friend acquire a dealership out of bankruptcy . . . and after the former owner had sworn . ."over my dead body". Interesting stuff going on everywhere at present.

Did the old owners leave voluntarily or did HD dealer relations boot them?

I am pretty sure they left voluntarily, at one time they owned multiple stores in SA. The original owner was a great guy, very passionate about the bikes and the business. Sadly he was killed in a motorcycle accident and the business went to his wife. It seemed to go down hill from there, not sure really why but it didn't have the same feel.
They closed the Durban branch earlier in the year, and had a mass sale on parts which we took full advantage of

I think the simple logistics of doing a Cairo to Cape Town run would be a complete nightmare. Especially the political uncertainty in many parts of Northern Africa. It is a shame that they had to move the Dakar Rally to South America just for that reason.

If you ever got a chance, come to South Africa and experience it on a bike. I am originally from the Pittsburgh PA area, actually right down the road from where Eric Buell was born and raised, and like you have ridden in 47 of the 48 lower states. I have to tell you that SA has some fantastic riding, and the bike community here is huge and the weather is great year round.
