Well, after getting a speed award (kinda bs, zone changed to 30 and I was slowing for it when I was tagged) I'm thinking it's time to get some bigger guns. Looking at radar detectors. Was wondering where you all mount yours on the 1125R and what ones you all would recommend to look at. | ||

There are only two radar detectors you should consider: - Valentine V1 - Passport Both work well and are good devices. Most everything else out there is crap. ANYTHING made by Rocky Mountain Radar is crap. I mount mine up under the windshield above the instrument cluster. A techmount "euro" mount that mounts on the triple tree works well, too. I like the HARD system for notification. (www.legalspeeding.com), but others exist that work well. | ||

Yep the V1 or on of the Passports (8500 or higher). My 8500 X50 is mounted above the IC. Neil S. | ||

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I've looked at the V1 in the past and have heard nothing but good things about that brand. I also know, before to many pipe in, that a radar detector is only a tool and does not make you invincible. You still have to use your head. I only want one to give me a bit of an early warning for the b******* sitting there sniping people in a f******* speed trap zone. Still a bit pissed about this crap today. GARRRRR.... And I was slowing down too!!!! | ||

Oh, forgot to ask. I was wondering, with my windscreen being painted, would this affect how well the detector would work? Radar or laser? | ||

anybody got any good ideas on where to put a detector on a cr without it really sticking out . Georgia will soon have a $200 add on fine for "excessive speed" Rick | ||

Let the detector help as much as you can. If you do get stopped, just be polite and completely forgettable. 99 times out of 100, for a little bit of extra money you can get the case dismissed. Traffic tickets are essentially civil fraud, used primarily as a mechanism for revenue generation when tax collections are down. Just realize that, realize it's all about the money, and don't worry about it. Put back a slush fund for tickets and just realize it's part of the deal. | ||

Lidar being line of sight will have it's detection ability attenuated by a painted windshield. A painted windshield should not attenuate the radar signal unless you have a paint with a VERY high metal content. FWIW, IMHO, if the LEO is using Lidar and you are speeding, you will be caught. By the time your LASER (Lidar) detector detects the laser beam, he has your speed reading. The only advantage you have on a motorcycle is that you don't have as much surface to reflect back the beam and he has to aim a lot better since the target is smaller, when compared to a car or truck. I ran RADAR for years but went off front line enforcement 7 years ago so what I am about to say may be a little dated. I bow to a current LEO's input on this. The paint won't effect reception of your device but be aware when I ran the laser, (LADAR) I aimed its pencil wide beam at the vehicle's headlights to get maximum reflection for the parabolic shaped lens. If the LASER beam does not point right at your device, you won't get a warning. RADAR is wide bean that covers more than a vehicle width so the device detects RADAR easily compared to LASER. Don't forget the RADAR or LADAR turns on from "standby mode" (in standby the RADAR/LADAR does not emit a beam therefore there is no signal for the warning device to receive and you are not warned in the impending doom to your pocket book and licence demerit points) with the flick of a switch and the LEO's reading of your speed is instant so unless a LEO is too lazy to use the RADAR/LADAR properly, a warning device won't protect you and is pretty much useless. I share this just so no one thinks these warning devices protect you. They are just a tool and as has already been said, you still have to be smart. In some jurisdictions (like mine)warning devices are illegal. Police have devices to detect if you have a RADAR/LADAR warning device in the vehicle and have the right to search the vehicle and seize the device. If you are still reading this, that's the way it used to be... for what it's worth. +1 on being pleasant when stopped. I would always cut the ticket back for those folks without them asking. X | ||

Since I was planning on some more electrical goodies up front, I found a key controlled wire to power a circuit for a terminal block mounted up in the fairing. You could also use the accy plug up front, which is key controlled, to power your accy. |
