Howdy,

So yesterday I did Lee Parks' Total Control Advanced Riders Clinic in Houston. Very nice class, highly recommended.

I did all the range exercises in first gear (riding my '08 1125R, latest reflash) and the bike ran like a champ the whole time.

Interestingly, there was lots of idling, but I don't think the coolant temperature broke 200F once (despite ambient temps close to 100F), and I think this is partly because I replaced the regular coolant with this stuff:

which is nothing but de-ionized water and Redline Water Wetter, mixed in the proper ratio. You can get your own de-ionized/distilled water and just combine it with Water Wetter yourself, but I thought this was more convenient. One 1/2-gallon container replaced all the coolant (I drained from the right side radiator/water pump).

So if you want to bring down temps (for as long as there is no chance of coolant freezing!) but also avoid using a Propylene-Glycol-based coolant (like Engine Ice) which Anony has expressly warned against, try this stuff.

MH

Thanks for the info, Pariah. I have considered doing that same class. Glad to hear your positive review. I live in College Station; we should meet up sometime. Do you have a group you like to ride with in the area?

-Kevin

I use Engine Ice in my track bike, and have similar results. It never even remotely gets hot.

What's wrong with Engine Ice?

Owner's manual, service manual, and Anony specifically state to use ethylene glycol based coolant only. I don't know why propylene glycol is harmful, just that it is.

I would like to ride the Lee Parks school. Unfortunately, there ain't one around middle TN. Maybe we could talk Timmy into holding one at his place.

Chad, what do you think??

I switched from the factory anti-freeze mix to water wetter and distilled water only.

Made about 10-15F difference in the temps of my bike. Mine still runs in the 210-220s at the track on 100F days, though, but that's sure better than constantly taking "breather" laps 'cause the temp light is on!

Hey Kevin,

Great to hear you're in the area! You should check out the Total Control ARCs running out of the Mancuso-HD dealership (Central location). They just started running the Total Control ARCs; Lee Parks personally approved the concrete used on their lot for ARC use (not all surfaces get the nod, apparently!). The class I took was only the second one that took place there.

I'm pretty much a lone wolf when it comes to riding. I have no friends; after all, I ride a Buell... : ) Seriously, though, there aren't many Buellers around me, and that's part of the problem.

Let me know if you're heading to a Total Control ARC (which I'd like to repeat) or a trackday at Texas World Speedway. It would be good to meet up there... when it cools down in the Fall, I plan to do a Lone Star or RideSmart trackday there. I'll drop you an email when I'm heading out there...

Neil: BTW, for $1500 you and a couple friends can enjoy a private lesson with Lee. His travel expenses would be extra. Maybe a good deal for what you could get out of it, considering Keith Code's Camp is about that much for one person.
