Fellas... today I rode my '08 1125R with the ORIGINAL flash down to the Buell demo day and rode an '09 1125R with the most CURRENT flash; below are my impressions:

1) Back to back I found the '09 only marginally more smooth than the '08 with exception of idling
2) The 'noid operation on the '09 was much more prevalent than on the '08.
3) The '09 did NOT run any cooler (CT) than the '08 (tested same conditions, same course, same ambient temp)
4) The '08 felt more 'balsy' throughout the entire rev range, pulled significantly harder
5) Clutch operation was far smoother on the '08 in regards to initial engagement (not flash related; I know)

This makes me wonder if I even want the most current flash at all. I was curious to ride a current flash 1125R as I always thought my original flash bike was pretty darn smooth! From seat of the pants - It doesn't 'feel' as if I am missing much (on the contrary even!) but I am wary of engine damage that I may incur by keeping my bike 'original' flash.
I'd just as soon keep this 'ballsy' flash but not at the expense of engine life. Comments?

PS. To get the most current flash will cost me $300 because Buell won't cover the cost of 'flashing' my bike as it was a write-off (which I obviously rebuilt)

IMO, for that price it would be better to get the OSB performance calibration. That way you would ensure to get the best of both worlds. The ballsy feel you have now but with the improved fueling for the engine.

Just get the cheaper which ever one that's the cheapest...and reread Xbswede's post.

That's the only way to a good (proper) running 1125.

Now here is the fly-in-the-ointment: I can't get the OSB flash without first getting the latest update! Apparently the OSB flash needs the latest (at least the 03Z actually) update to work from (as a base I assume). I corresponded with DL (who by the way seems like a genuinely decent fellow) about this and he said I needed the 05Z to use his software.

Very frustrating situation to say the least! All I really would like to do is lock the AFV higher! Thats it, thats all. I guess a Protune 3 could do that job - but $300 for that too! I dunno...

$300 seems like a lot for a flash

Couldn't you get the reflash by pulling a stock map from another bike and reflashing your own bike?

I am new to this FI thing, so this is an honest question.

I have read somewhere that the original 08 flash has the same timing map as the Buell race module. Everything points to the original 08 flash being the most powerful stock flash by a ton.

Why they can remove ten hp and not change the factory hp ratings is beyond me.

These are all good ideas - thanks to XBswede I think we may have found a solution. Time to take a peek into the 1125's brain!

I got the 03Z flash when they first came out and my "08 1125R" was improved for some low rpm smoothness and charging but I have been reluctant to get the 05Z and maybe I've made the right choice so far but I am at higher altitude then most and it might make a significant difference. With my own muffler system, denoided and open inner air box it runs great from idle around town to redline. I am happy. Maybe a bit lean, I have no way of telling, but no need to change when its running this good and if I cared the EPA is happy also. Bob

I'm no expert at deciphering Buell's 'flashes' but this is what mine spit out after fetching the EPROM:
Firmware: 'BUEWD0J6'
Calibration is: '168:Race'
Socoken, you may be onto something here. I am looking at simply doing a global fuel enrichenment by locking the AFV higher (110 seems popular). Like I said I am a novice when it comes to this electronic tuning but I must say I am very excited at the prospect of cranking out some serious HP. The best part is that by working together (insert big high five to XBswede!)with other 1125 enthusiasts we can share knowledge to make all of our bikes run as they should.

I think any time you fetch an eeprom with ecmspy with a post 07 bike, or rather one that ecmspy is not compatible with, it will show as a race calibration.

Socoken, I agree. My 09 has been reflashed by dealer, and both eeproms were listed as (different number) "Race Calibration" LoL at first I thought I had somethin' special

First off, if you were riding an '09 with real low miles, that would explain the lower feeling of power as the motor would still be tight. The newest flash on my '09 felt much better than the one it came with.

Also, who is telling you Buell won't cover the flash? Buell or your dealer? It sounds like a bunch of dealer mouth diarrea to me. And, $300 is a rediculous amount to charge - it takes 20-30 minutes and no parts to do the flash. That's $35 at $70/hr shop rate.

Nope the '09 had 1000 more miles than my '08. Maybe I'm one of the last guys out there with the absolute original flash left on thier 1125R; BUEWD0J6 from 11-06-07. It honestly doesn't feel rough, surging or anything else. The '09 might have been a teeny weeny bit more smooth right around 3k but on the flip side it definitely seemed less urgent in acceleration - but lets remember this was a demo ride where I could rarely let 'er rip.
The dealer has told me because my bike was a 'total loss' it is no longer covered by Buell's updates and therefore they have to swallow the charge of the flash (from Buell) approx. $200 and then they want $100 labour to do it. I am not too worried about it anymore though thanks to helpful people here on Badweb. Information is indeed power!

If you can ride the 1125r to the limit in all the gears on a regular basis, my hats off to you!

Metalrabbit; I spend most of my time in the 5-8k range but I do spin it up quite often. I cruise at about 90mph on the highway get up to 150mph at least once on most rides - maybe thats out of the norm - but this is a sportbike and the roads around here are built for speed.
I'm enjoying my 1125R more everyday - I usually get bored of a bike within about 6 months and trade in for something else but this bike has held my attention. I'm quite happy - but won't be satisfied till it pulls 2nd gear roll-on's!

Not personal guys, it just seems that many want more out of this bike and I'm thinkin', Heysuse, its enough for me LOL!

I bought my '09 right after I purchased a used VFR 800 Interceptor. Riding the 800 I was an expert in one day,, the Buell took a few weeks to figure out.

The Buell 1125r is a very interesting machine,, pulls like a rocket and demands a riding position that can take you to some pretty scarey speeds. But like they say,"if it don't scare you some, it ain't fun". There are some faster but this is more than enough for me.

None taken Sly; I'm not even sure what a squid really is but whatever it is - I am pretty sure I ain't it... 25+ bikes later, tens of thousands of miles and about 40 or so races under my belt I've come to appreciate a rare bike like this. Its rare because you can putter around on it or you can scratch with the rice rockets. I prefer the latter - but thats just me. I try and tell it like it is, nothing more, nothing less.
I am sticking with the Buell due to the fact it 'performs' - not because I am brand loyal, not because I want to belong to some sort of club - but in saying that I have met some super individuals on this site and greatly appreciate thier input. It is a very good bike right now BUT has the potential to be GREAT. I share everyones enthusiasm to make ALL of our bikes as good as they can be. Taker easy!

The OSB performance tune of the 2008 1125R uses the Race ECM spark map and the 05Z flash calibration as a base.
Ohh, and find another dealer to flash your bike. Shouldn't cost more than 60.

I get the impression the spark map from the original flash (BUEWD0J6) is actually a good one to have - I'm satisfied with not getting the 05Z anymore. Having a 'write off' bike has its advantages (cheap ownership) and disadvantages (no factory support). I've rebuilt about 6 bikes in the last year and sold them all - but this Buell has a permanent home in my garage. Thanks for everyones input.
