im blown away that my belt is doing this. its not rubbing on the metal heel guard, just on the plastic. what should i do?? i can hear it when it happens, and it seems to be on agressive left turns on deceleration. i can do it on the track but its difficult to do on the street since i dont ride it that hard.

edit--thought your foot was rubbing on the plastic. No idea how your belt is doing that...belt lined up correct.y

Is it possible that your boot is pushing it in, causing it to rub the belt?

hmm that would involve some pretty hard pushing on my boot's part. generally my leg is away from the frame on left turns, not pushing up against it.

You sir have discovered the same thing that I have... that downshifting can slack the belt on the top and it will rub.

I believe you can actually cause it to snag and snap the belt, too. I believe that's what happened to me.

From the top picture, it looks like your belt guard in pushed in farther than mine. Mine is perfectly in line with the heel guard, and has not had any contact with the belt.

when i hear the belt grinding on the cover, it seems that im under high engine braking; im just completely stumped as to what i should do.

i think im just going to allow it to self clearance itself. i was thinking about cutting the back section off of the cover off and keeping just the front round portion, but i think id get a shoe lace sucked up in there during street riding.

"hmm that would involve some pretty hard pushing on my boot's part."

It was just a thought that on left turns (on the balls of your feet) that your heel could possibly push it just a little. If not, no problem.

"generally my leg is away from the frame on left turns, not pushing up against it."

I understand. That's why I said foot not leg. When most people hang a leg out, they pivot on the ball of their foot and tend to bring their heel in.

i might push up against it a bit with the ball of my heel, but not enough to bend the plastic that dramatically.

i tried pushing back on the cover with just my hand, and its incredibly difficult to make the cover touch the belt (even more difficult now with it being so ground down); it feels like its about to break the tabs off.

as odd as it sounds, i think the belt is the one doing the traveling, not the cover.

I didn't know if that cover flexed much or not. Obviously not.
Sounds like what you said about the traveling belt. Jdugger seems to have the same deceleration/slacking/rubbing issue also.
Maybe others too that haven't noticed the rubbing yet?

DId that a couple weeks ago and i scared the crap out of me. Thankfully the Buell didn't like what it was eating and spit it out.

Shoe laces??? Are you kidding?? That's like wearing bell bottoms in a bicycle race. Dang! What do you wear on the race track?

No. I just wear foot wear (boots, not flip flops) without laces.
How weird/safe is that?

You can also buy zippers for combat or fire boots. They're way quick and can save your ass.

Uh. Laces are safe if they are properly tied. Double knot, children.

Skipping past the footwear lesson/debate, has it been discovered what is causing this for certain? Has this happened to others?

Mine is like that. I actually caught myself pushing on it with my heel. I smelled something burning and looked down to see I was pushing the guard in with the heel of my boot.

I tried pushing in on mine, and I think its very possible to do it with your heal. I felt the back of mine and couldnt tell if it was worn or not, but I caught myself doing it once on my ride yesterday. I think that makes a lot more sense than the belt traveling a half inch off the pulley.

A good technique is for the edge of the peg to be in the ball of your foot. You should be wearing your boots out from the hole being dug into our boot by the end of the peg.

There should be little risk, if any, of your boot pushing the belt guard into the belt.

Exactly what I was doing when I caught myself pushing the guard into the belt. Maybe over rotating my leg out words, but the ball of my foot was in fact on the peg.

next time i hear it, since i know where the sound is coming from, im going to try lifting my foot off and out from the peg completely and see if it stops grinding.
