So do the '09s come with Syn3 from the factory or standard 20w50? Both the owner's manual and the service manual do not specify. | ||

are you positive? i'm not trying to question your knowledge or anything like that but neither the owner's manual or the service manual directly state which oil. I put reg 2050 in mine and it is running hella hot. The sad thing is that I work at a HD/Buell dealership and since I'm the only one to buy an 1125 none of the techs have done a service on one so nobody knows. The owner's manual does state that if you must add oil use syn3 when possible so I'm thinking I need to do another oil change and switch it back to syn | ||

It's regular S.E. 20/50 for break-in from what I was told. I changed it at the recommended 620mi to S.E. Synthetic 20/50 also recommended. I just changed it again at 2440mi just because it was getting fairly dark and I'm goin' on a 600mi round trip. They're 20/50 looks a bit whimpy to me and it sure got dark fast. | ||

SYN3 is a semi-synthetic oil, and should be fine for break-in. After break-in you might want to consider using a 100% synthetic oil for the best performance. If using mineral oil make sure not to exceed the 3,000 mile service interval, and 5,000 miles for semi-syn- 100% syn is good for 7,500-10,000 miles. | ||

Hmmm...based on the color of my Amsoil (very dark) after last week's oil change at 3,000 miles, I wouldn't let it go to much farther. Now maybe the color is not the best indicator, but it was very dark. I also had a few track days on that oil, so that may have a little to do with it...to me it's cheap insurance to change oil at 3,000 miles no mater what you run in the crankcase. edit--and along the same lines, I would change the filter each oil change--the manual specifies a filter change every other oil change. Based on what it looks like, I would be very hesitant to let it go to the next change....YMMV (Message edited by fresnobuell on July 15, 2009) | ||

Yes, dark color is not the best indicator of an oil's level of degradation- an oil analysis is really the only way to know the true condition of your oil. It's amazing the amount of information you get from sending a sample in. Yes, changing the oil before it breaks down is never going to cause any harm- but doing it after certainly can. |
