>>>I am surprised such a tactic has not been successfully appealed.

Hahahaha. . . .welcome to NY. I remember seeing 6 riders, all with their bikes lying on their sides next to the Saw Mill Parkway . . . all handcuffed to each other around a tree.

It's partially law, partially ego trip on the part of the local cops. . . . . my riding partner, who has 9 bikes and rides to work every day, has been pulled over sometimes as much as 3 times in a week.

I just don't with them.

NYC has seen far too many jackasses with straight pipes blasting down the road with the sound reverbing off of all the concrete and glass, setting off car alarms up and down the street. Sounds real funny unless you LIVE there and have to put up with that crap every day. Eventually, something snaps.

I've said it thousands of times if I've said it once: Either WE muffle our bikes, or someone will do it for us, and we AREN'T going to like the solution THEY come up with!

I don't get pissed at the people who pass the laws, I get pissed at the a-holes that made them want to consider them in the first place.

It's not just bikes either. I can't tell you how annoying it is to have a "boom boom" stereo system pass your house. There are times where it's rattled the dishes in my cabinets and the pictures on my wall. I didn't really mind much until my daughter was born, then you realize how precious free time is, and when that child is asleep, you don't want anything to wake her up.

Ooooh wow! Some moron can spend stupid amounts of money on big speakers to make everyone look at him.

The older and more stodgy I get, the more I realize it's best to NOT be seen or heard. Stealth is a wonderful thing.

Your right, its not just bikes...or stereos for that matter. My town has ALOT of old muscle cars w/loud exhausts and almost every pickup truck has a custom (loud) exhaust. The worst is the diesel's they are unreal. If they are going to enforce sound based laws, they better focus on EVERYone not just bikes.

You're right, and the AMA is trying to convince the lawmakers that ANY noise legislation be evenly applied to ALL motor vehicles and not just motorcycles.

Unfortunately, the perception out there is that all motorcycles are loud, and we end up with ridiculous laws banning motorcycles in general (not just the loud ones), or they enact laws that target JUST motorcycles. We don't help our cause by continually pissing off our neighbors by running loud exhausts.

But it's not JUST motorcyclists that get targeted by STUPID laws. Did you know NYC has an ordinance for just how long your car alarm is supposed to sound? Wouldn't want to inconvenience the car thief breaking into your car, would we?

And I can understand how/why people get upset with excessive noise, too. I spent three weeks in Manila, and the traffic noise in that city is MIND altering! If you think New York City is loud, you ought to visit the crowded cities of third world countries to see how bad it can get.

Jaime is exactly right. Between street raicng, loud pipes, urban stunting - we're bringing the law down on our own heads.

If you need to complain to somebody, FIRST look in the mirror, if you don't see the guilty party, write Con-gress.

If you don't join the AMA, just STFU.

"Most people hate motorcycles"

I strongly disagree. In my experience most folks relate well to motorcycles.

Hello guys! on this side of the world - in italy - the law against loud pipes are very strict. And you can have a great fine if the twins stop you on the street. And that's not cool. When i was in California this summer i saw a lot of bikes and cars louder than hell, way too loud!! I asked myself how they could enjoy the ride for miles and miles with such a sound.
On my xb I had a drummer, and it was a very cool and strong pipe! with a wonderful subwoofer sound. But unfortunately it was good for 100km, but for more it was too stressfull, i couldn't enjoy my ride, even wit earplugs (it's even dangerous, IMHO). When I chenged it with the CR, i decided to leav the bike stock: it's cheaper, less stressfull, and it does not give problems with the little twins.

Yup... that's just what we call them down in Daytona... Life savers. As in "Look at all of those people out there saving lives."

The other thing in common, of course, is the big hole in the center.

500,000 miles in New York City metro traffic since 1982 and I've NEVER had a problem running the stock exhaust.

Gee, wonder what I'm doing wrong??

Doubtful. Cars, even my convertible, are so well insulated these days that it'd be tough.

Yesterday, heading to school, some guy was on the BQE on a GSXR and kept rapping the thing to ear shattering level. Folks, this is NYC, just pulled in front of him and cut him off.

My stock exhaust performs better and allows me to dig my tunes while riding . . . . I'd rather listen to Hendrix than a frickin exhaust pipe.

The weakest point of insulation, be it heat or sound, home or auto, is the windows. Automobiles have come a long way in reducing road noise, but a loud pipe anywhere near your window is gonna pound through just like it did 40 years ago.
