I thought there was a recently released (ending in "12") update for my bike (April '08 build). I had to bring it in today for battery drain problem (was told they need to verify the complaint before ordering me a new I.C.) and asked about the latest ECM update. I was told that the last was released in September '08 and I had it already. There might be a new one in the pipeline that hasn't been released to dealers yet.
Can someone enlighten me?
Thanks

I have the battery drain problem, but my dealer is saying they can't do anything about it and all batteries self drain. I asked if 4 days is long enough to drain the battery and they didn't answer me...

What is the IC? I will have to email Buell Australia to see what the go is.

James

Hi James,
From what i have learned on this forum, Service Tech (#396 I believe) specifically describes a battery drain issue with early '08 instrument clusters (I.C.) which lead to battery drain problems. The solution is IC replacement. My battery was completely dead over one night. This happened twice. It has been on a battery tender in my garage between rides but I take it to work regularly and dont want to be stuck after an overnight stint.

Yes, get the cluster replaced.

Didn't the last "product improvement" campaign (that included the third reflash, new fuel vent line, sidestand spring and updated dipstick), address some battery issues?

Certainly, my cooling fan shuts off a lot sooner than it used to once I cut the ignition. I would think that the cluster could get "fixed" through reflashing alone, but maybe this is a more serious hardware problem?

I've used a battery tender religiously, so, apart from some very infrequent battery draining (typically after a service appointment), I haven't had any problems.

Ccmdoc, when did you get your bike? Sometimes, due to dealer neglect, a battery needs to be conditioned (with a good tender) to start working properly.

After the new cluster for my bike, there is no more need for a tender or any other such nonsense, it actually works like it is supposed to. If you ride your bike regularly, a battery tender should be completely unnecessary.

If you let it sit for weeks or months, then a tender is a great idea.

I have had the same battery in my M2 for over 8 years now, no tender, and it has actually sat for months( 2 new york winters) and only needed to be charged once, at the end of the second winter.

All I am really saying is, if you are having battery troubles with your 1125, and you have one of the early build bikes, you should get your bike checked out under warranty, and if there are no other problems, then your cluster should be replaced for free.

This was the cure for my and many others battery drain issue.

The battery tender is addressing the symptom of the cluster draining your battery. Get it replaced before warranty is up and it's on your own dime.

Regular use of a tender is sometimes necessary because of security devices. I've got a unit that will drain my battery if left for a week with no tender. I find that my bike also runs better (improved ignition) if the battery is kept topped up.

Maybe I should just get the MagnaVolt, as it does not drain the battery...

How do I get my local service folk to get that info? i was there on Friday and service manager seemed to be looking at the computer and said "Nope, last thing I see is the September '08 update and we did that when we did the dipstick and other recalls."

I may be wrong about a new one, but I definitely got one in Sept. and again this spring.

As far getting the service guys the info, I would suggest calling Buell customer service. Get some answers and get the info to your service person.

The last two recall/product improvements for the 2008 1125R (early build) arrived on September 17, 2008 and October 6, 2008 (these are the dates on the letters I have received).

Sept. 17th is the "third" and most recent ECM reflash. It provides for improved "cold start, drivability, fuel mileage and reduced heat."

Oct. 6th addresses "fuel vent line assembly and routing, improved sidestand spring, and new oil filler plug with oil level marking that provides improved accuracy." There is no ECM (calibration) update with the Oct. 6th campaign.

I just got the Sept. 17 2008 reflash a couple of weeks ago. Pretty sure there hasn't been an update since Sept. '08 or my dealer would have informed me.

Cheers,
T.
