I know this inquiry has been posted before by others, because I found many during a search.

But so far I've NOT found one that has pics or a diagram or a comprehensive explanation of how the canister and its factory hoses connect to the engine, etc. Really, I'd rather not guess.

Would anyone who has this info be so kind? Thanks in advance, I feel definitive info would help others on this Board, too.

Look at the 96 S1 service manual, a pdf document, which is online at BMC I believe, or in this forum if you care to look around.

Or, you could buy the service manual for your particular bike. What's 60 bucks for having all the factory knowledge at your fingertips? Priceless, when it counts.

For goodness sake, Sparky and Ebear, do you think I would've posted for the info if the info was in the manual?! I bought the 09 manual before I took delivery of the bike.

Sorry to say, it was exactly these kinds of posts that I EXPECTED when I posted. Thought I'd give you chaps another go; my mistake, won't happen again.

Red, pardon me if my first response seemed flippant, but you asked for "a comprehensive explanation of how the canister and its factory hoses connect to the engine" and this info is basically in the S1 manual and it's also in the 1125 manual only more detailed.

That info is: one hose goes from the CARB fitting on the canister to the carb (throttle body on 1125) vacuum port and the other hose goes from the TANK fitting to the fuel tank vent valve. The difference is the 1125 does not appear to have the large hose going to the air filter which the S1 has.

So, here's some pics for ya if these will help any. Note the large port is not capped or apparently connected to anything on mine. Also note there is a large crack in the plastic end housing which, I'm sure, is not supposed to be there. But if that end housing is otherwise sealed internally from the ports on the other end of the canister, it shouldn't make a difference in the engine performance.

How about fixing the BBS then? It's not working with IE or Safari today.

Sorry for the workaround. PM me for the pix if you want them.

Sparky, is there any more parts to install besides the canister and 2 hoses (one from fuel vent and the other to brass fitting on throttle bodies)? I have mine installed that way and the tank gets a lot of pressure in it when it gets hot. I don't know if I'm missing something.

Thank goodness someone finally posted pics of the can installed! Sparky, is there any chance you can take a picture of where the hose mounts on the throttle body? Yes, I am an idiot because I could not figure it out a few weeks ago when I had it all apart.

Thank you again, Sparky!

Cobradave93, no other parts. The canister just sits in there, at least on mine it does.

Regarding the tank building up pressure, there might be an issue with your vent valve on the fuel "tank" or the hose from the vent valve to the canister might be pinched. Quite possibly, when the tank heats the vent valve, that might cause the valve to close when it shouldn't.

Jjk, sorry but I'm not taking mine apart to take a pic of the throttle bodies when there's a good shot of the throttle bodies at Figure 4-36 in the Service Manual that shows what looks like a fitting for a vacuum hose. : )

What is the fitting on the left side of the canister that looks like it has an o-ring on it?
Does the California bike still have the vent tube that exits back by the passenger peg?

Sleez, yes indeedee. Just doing my part to help bring the economy around.

Parrick, the answer to your first question is in the third paragraph in this post.
Second question answer is no.

Thanks,

Sparky, thanks for that info. I wouldn't have checked back except Zac told me you'd been able to post up the info.

I haven't been able to locate the info in the 09 manual; guess I'll need to look again, and a little harder.

Thanks especially for the info that the large fitting with the o-ring is not connected to anything. Not being able to work out what it connected to made me feel brain-dead.

Is the fitting on the t/b easy to find and connect to? Haven't looked hard enough for it yet.

And now that I've installed a battery tender under the seat (my first error code in 7,500 kms was a 'system voltage' and sure enough voltage was down into the 11s) I don't know where I'll put the cannister now!

Red, you put a battery tender under the seat?

No, that's not right!

The Battery Tender, a Harley-Davidson Battery Tender that is, goes in the garage or wherever you park the bike in your homestead, and has a quick-disconnect SAE 2-terminal polarized connector which mates a harness assembly with battery ring terminals on one end and a mating SAE quick-disconnect on the other end with a 10? amp fuse in the middle. The installed quick-disconnect connector can conveniently lie accessible and partially hidden in the air duct by the pillion seat key area. All you/we have to do is plug the B/T into the bike when it's parked (and plug it in the wall socket : )).

Regarding the T/B details, I don't know any more about it than what is shown and mentioned in the factory service manual, sorry.

When I installed mine, the only fitting I found for the throttle body hose was on the left side of the front TB under the linkage. It was a brass fitting and the only one I could find even with the TBs off the bike. If someone knows if this is correct or not, let us know.

Thanks for all of the above, especially to Cobra, because if he hadn't mentioned "brass" fitting I'd have never found the damned thing. The logical connection, too, because it has a rubber cap over it (so is intended to be reversibly used/not used).

Seriously, thanks to Sparky and Cobra, I've installed my canister now.

For the record, the Service Manual 09 has a page for the CA canister, which only roughly DESCRIBES (words) the connections but does not illustrate the routing of the hoses. And the single illustration shows no more info than is imprinted onto the canister itself. And it certainly doesn't indicate where the throttle body fitting is.
