Now that there are a few options out there, I was hoping to get some input. My biggest gripe with the stock pipe is (other than the quiet/heavy part) how much it stinks. This bike envelopes my clothing with more noxious exhaust fumes than any other bike I have ever ridden. Even my M2, which did smell up my clothes a bit, was no where near this bad. Especially female passengers end up smelling like they tried to commit suicide by locking themselves in a closet with a running motorcycle for days.

Do any of the new pipes help this at all? I know the nature of the underslung exhaust exit will always facilitate exhaust gas circulation around the rider, but this bike REALLY stinks.

thanks,
Ken

I rerouted the fuel tank breather from the LHS pillion footrest to the rear number plate (licence plate to you) so the fumes are carried away from the back end without contaminating the pillion rider.

I've had my bike for a while but I just started riding due to weather.
What is the deal with the heavy fuel smell.
After a ride I usually clean it and garage it.
This bike fills the entire garage with gas fumes .... WTF ?

Winter fuel boils at a lower temp than summer gas.
Many of us had strong smells this time last year also.
In a month or two you won't smell it anymore.

Make sure there are no kinks in your vent line.
Put a box fan in your garage and point it at the front of the bike when you park it after riding.
Maybe even leave the door open a few minutes...

The engine holds a lot of heat and it's right below/beside the fuel, heat radiates.

Actually, do you WANT a lighter muffler? I was thinking about this the other day. Because of the muffler location, wouldn't putting a lighter muffler on there RAISE the center of gravity, thereby affecting the handling?

You ALWAYS want to use the lightest components possible. The engine is sitting that high by design from the factory and will not change the COG significantly by losing a few pounds under it. You always want the lightest parts period.

So am I the only one that thinks the exhaust fumes are more prevalent than desired? I dont mind the smell of exhaust too much, but this is beyond that. No bike I have ever ridden can make my clothes smell so bad, they make my bedroom stink if I dont do a wash that day. Even my leathers contaminate my other coats in my closet.

I was hoping one of the new pipes had a different exit location or direction of turn-out that would allow the wind to take it away and not let me soak in my own aerodynamic bubble of burned dinosaurs.

For the first time in my ownership of this bike, I parked it and came back to a HUGE puddle of gas under it. Never been an issue before.

Must be the winter gas.

Socoken:

I've never noticed (and my anal-retentive wife has never complained of) exhaust fumes. I'm not prepared to say you're the only one, but I'm not there.

I have experienced the exhaust fumes as well.
However, I've notice that it's less prevalent as the weather gets warmer.

Carbon--- a puddle of gas, really? Not coolant?

I've had the puddle before, but it was coolant, at a trackday when I didn't let the engine cool down enough.

The best place to reduce weight is to do so on the big nut that holds the handlebars...

A puddle! I had just gassed up, in ground tanks, fuel was COLD, and it was warming up rapidly outside.

Is that the consensus opinion then: winter gas causes the heavy exhaust smell? A different pipe will not help?
I'm getting that too and it's a problem.
