Need help again! 08 1125R @ 8K miles and Clean! This just happened after a 24 hour shutdown...never a problem like this in the past... Turn the ignition key ON today to RIDE(!!!), only the headlights come on, NO dash, ecu, fuel pump, ect... Turn the ignition key to PARK, all good, dash, ecu, fuel pump and everything else seems a ok. All fuses are ok. All relays are ok. Battery voltage is ok. All electrical connections ok. I suspect a just happened...bad Ignition/Key switch assembly. Any help here? | ||

Odd that the PARK works for dash, but not ON. Are they the same leads from the key switch, or maybe could they be wired up separately? | ||

Had the same thing happen on my XB once, it was a bad ground. | ||

I just finished checking all of the grounds with the meter...thanks Froggy but nothing proves ill. I think its going to be a long night in the shop. Thank goodness that this has happened now and not when I was on the road. Another day driving a cage is all that really is bad but the good is another learning experience. I'm leaning more and more to the ign switch. Any other input/ideas? | ||

I'm very sure that the problem is within the key switch itself now. Thanks fellow Bueller's for each input! I can't go deeper due to the fact that a warranty issue might be in effect...along with a list of other issues needing attention. Just sucks tho as we've got a two day window for 50+' riding weather in Central Ohio! Really sucks. Oh well. Back to the cage until resolve and better weather again. Thank you all for the input. Glad to know there is help after hours! I'll post what the proven problem was, once I'm "online" w/key again. FWIW, it might end up being a toggle switch!  mm | ||

MM: Warranty concern after all you have done????? It does sound like a ground issue, check the harness going into the key switch. Time2Run | ||

"It" is isolated to the ignition/key assembly. Just talked with Xb9 tonight and he offered more to look for. Funny that I'm "grounded" right now! LOL! FWIW, no warranty will be in effect on this one, I'm rewiring and deleting this assembly!  ...who needs a key when she's always in sight? Sly placed toggle seems the solution. | ||

Mr.MM, The same thing happened to my wife's bike, she has about 3,500 miles on her bike. Last weekend we went for a ride and about 65 miles into the ride, she tells me to pull over, her speedometer was not working, but her headlight's were on. I just saw the dash lights were off and the engine light was on! I just turned the key off and then on, everything worked fine the rest of day. I'm sure you will find your bug. good luck Rey | ||

Found it! Turning the friggin' bars to left extreme was pulling too hard on one little wire within the harness... It only took three teardowns -4- hours to find it when I could have simply turned the bars to extreme right as that was only done to move the bike around! When in the rh position, all is happy with key on. Go figure. Glad I turned the key in wonder! One little ($^&$%&@#%) wire buried within the head area main harness is all that is wrong. Same thing happened to me, except it was only the brake light that would not work. The connector had to be crimped a bit to keep it from pulling out every time the handle bars were turned all the way to the left. | ||

Just try leaving that small wire on th negative terminal on the battery. During my 1st round of electrical farkels, I was at a HIGH state of panic when I turned the key the first time and all sorts of funny light/ brake/ instrument/ turn signals came on, when they won't supposed to!! There was frantic call to Zac asking how many wires went to the battery> That one small gauge wire had fallen alongside the battery. Life is good now, especially since I have the SM. Later Neil S. |
