do you know if Amsoil refines their product or has another company do it?

Amsoil does not do refining- they choose the best synthetic base stocks and additives and combine them to produce their line of products. This enables them to choose the ingredients that meet their specifications (like a boutique oil) and then R&D them to ensure they perform to the high standards set by Amsoil.

I can understand why you would not want to send money to Citgo, but H-D was just shopping for price and Citgo had the magic number- I'm sure politics played no role in that business decision. H-D is buying low and selling high, and there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that- but for me, if I'm going to spend top-dollar I make sure I'm getting the absolute best product my money can buy... and that's why I use and sell Amsoil.

I use Amsoil and have since the first oil change. In addition my HD local dealer offers owners the choice of SYN-3 or Amsoil for their 1125R oil changes.

That should pretty much put an end to the debate in my opinion.

RBJ--We don't see eye to eye on the 1125r, but I have to agree with you on this one.

Not that it means a WHOLE lot, but subject of what kind of oil I put in my 1125r arose at my last trip to the dealer (2 weeks ago.) When I mentioned Amsoil, they 2 techs to whom I was speaking had nothing but praise for Amsoil....and there certainly wasn't any talk of possibly voiding any warranty.

Here is a great article on this subject! For reasons explained in this article, I use Rotella T Synthetic.

Ummmm...Cheap oil is the best! The cheaper your oil, the faster your bike will be! No, really, I saw it on TV.

ALL major oils are good. If any of you are breaking an oil down in the conditions you ride in, I'd be totally surprised.

I was researching Syn3 and saw a lab analysis of it and the results were about what I expected. Of the three base oils in the mix, only 1 was a group IV oil, the other two were group II/III meaning that it isn't a full synthetic.

http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/hot-topics/24547 -nitty-gritty-syn3.html

Also, it turned out to be made by a company that also refined fuel and a lot of the american posters hated. Can't remember the name though. It is all in the thread I linked to above.

Well, I just switched from Syn 3 to Mobil 1 V-Twin (6000 miles on bike), and it *feels* like it shifts a little bit smoother now.

For what that is worth...

I used the HD Synth 3 since I work at HD/Buell dealership as Buell specialist and they took care of my first service for free but speculated with service about having to use HD synth 3(is it citgo or sunoco making this oil).

I have used Shell Rotella T 5w-40 and Shell Dino before in KTM race bikes with no problems and great shifting. The word is a lot of the KTM factory use Shell Rotella in MX/desert and other bikes.......KTM use to endorse Shell in there engines back in 2003, European Shell advance Synthetic motorcycle oil, but may be similar to Shell Rotella T. Check the Shell site and forums, great info and tech stuff/feedback from Shell staff, etc.

I will probably use Shell Rotella next time or Motorex 20w-50 racing synthetic oil..since i get a great sponsorhip price and is used with a lot of racers/KTM and superbike teams here and europe, just very expensive here. I will be checking with Buell in WI and some racers what they use in there 1125R/CR's. I forgot to ask some superbike/sportbike racer/instructors at the HD/Buell back to track program this past week in Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Nothing an email cant do........
