I was thinking of installing a California canister in my bike to get rid of the vent tube that drips gas everywhere I stop. Not only to stop drips, but because this will make everything in my soft saddlebags smell like gas.
Has anyone done this on their bike and do you guys recommend this? And also do I need more than the two hoses and the canister?

The fumes get vented from the gas tank, thru the canister and back into the throttle body. I haven't seen it for myself, but I understand that the vaccum port in the throttle body is capped for the 49 state bikes. I don't see why you couldn't install it by removing the cap on the throttle body and installing the required hoses and carbon can.

Just install a catch can with a vent line to the rear number plate area.

This is what I am thinking of doing so I can remove the pillion pegs and hangers.

Did the same thing with the XB12R cyl head vent lines some years ago.

A catch can would probably be a cheaper and easier scenario than the CA can. Something like the Jaz 1 pint would make things real clean and easy to do.

With this being all gas, most would evap and would require little if no draining.

Don't know about cost of the carbon can, but i can tell you that the jaz can above is for sure more than $50 and probably closer to $75.

Wasn't it mentioned on here that there is a new piece for the vent setup on the 49 state models that is suppose to fix this drip problem?

NO it just relocates the drip. For you 49 state guys, I would assume you have the room for the can? It would go a long way to helping the fumes as that is its specific purpose.

By mistake, my dealer bypassed the can when doing the vent line recall....the first thing I did was rerun the line they cut and put the thing back to stock form.

Yeah when I took mine in for this recall I was back with the tech and they wanted to re-route mine. I told them not to re-route it.

They kept arguing with me and finally they were able to get through to someone at corporate and verify the re-route was strictly a 49 state thing.

Glad I was back there that day bugging the tech.

mine got the re-route done and then they called me about a week later to tell me it wasn't supposed to happen to our Ca. bikes, so back it went to be put back into "stock" form.

Mine would have got rerouted, but they did Bobup's first and then found out they weren't supposed to. :-)

Pretty hard to believe that any tech wouldn't know it's illegal to bypass the can in California. Even I know that....

The left the can in there, spliced into the hose running to it and rerouted to the passenger peg. Doesn't do much good to have the can in there, but not attached.

I just ordered the canister and two hoses. It was a little over $60.
