My bike has about 900 miles on it now, and I did the 620 mile service myself. I've never owned a bike before with a drive belt, so I'd like to know if the wear I'm seeing is normal or not. I checked and it looks as if there are no points where the sides of the belt contact anything except the sides of the countershaft pulley (normal I think). There aren't any marks on the belt or chunks of rubber missing.

The first pic is of a portion of the belt where it appears to have no wear. The second pic is taken at another part of the belt where you can see the fibers showing through the rubber on the side.

Yep - very normal, not to worry.

I had the dealer put some washers on the belt covers to open up the clearance between the cover and belt. I have not had any problems since. I saw that trick on this board when I first got my bike, and the belt started to fray before the first maintenance.

Yep, a single washer on each of the two bottom mount points for the lower belt guard is what I did at maybe 500 miles or so. I had a little less wear than what is in the pic above, and it still looks the same today at over 8000 miles.

This is normal....as has been said many times. What you are seeing actually isn't wear, this was most likely how your belt looked when you bought it. When Goodyear cuts the belt, sometimes the cords were cocked a little bit in the mold. I'd actually say this happens more times than not. But yeah, this Question belongs in a FAQ because we see it once a month, and its been the same answer since the XBs.

These really are great quality belts and they just keep getting better with the production of newer bikes.

I am in process of testing a belt I got from Court.
It is coiled up tight under the seat of my R.

In another month or so, I will mount it and see how long it lasts.
These are much better than the belt on my '03 XB9R.
