i am considering that heat shield. How heat resistant is CF? | ||

The stock one reflects heat very well, I painted mine and it hasn't lifted yet. | ||

The top of mine is scorched and it the one dull plastic-y piece I wouldn't mind replacing. Maybe put some heat blocking tape on the backside? I am normally not a big CF fan but this piece got my attention. | ||

i am considering that heat shield. How heat resistant is CF? You'd have to ask Al at what temperatures the pieces are molded. Molding temperature is a usable guide as to the temperatures they'd take. There is a HUGE variation in temperature performance depending on the particular resin and to what temperatures they've been run to in processing. | ||

al just a suggestion it would be nice to have the pillion cover in cf to go with the tail peice. it all looks great thanks for the support of are great bike | ||

The tail cowl and side pods are still in work. The tail cowl is going to be produced in both CF and Fiberglass, and won't require the passenger seat to mount, so that the extra storage space can be used. I'll also be slightly taller to add a bit more storage space. I'm still waiting on the first article so I can finalize the hold down components. No issues with the heat shield. The CF can take anything that stock plastic piece can and then some. Al | ||

I work with that kinda stuff for a living... and trust me, Al's graphite stuff is made WITHOUT COMPROMISING QUALITY. If he offers fiberglass parts made from the same molds, I would bet he could sell a ton of those as well. There will eventually be some cheap carbon bits sold on ebay but the stuff that American Sport Bike has WILL BE aircraft/race quality. | ||

I don't at all doubt the workmanship of any product Al sells... If and when I want to do anything to my bike, AmericanSportBike.com will be the first place I look. I just wish he had all the CF stuff available when virtually all of my bike plastics were being replaced earlier this year. Had to go with OEM. | ||

Keep in mind that the price of the RAW MATERIAL is on the order of $60 per square yard. Multiply the surface area by 3 layers and factor in about a 30% waste and you're looking at a RAW MATERIAL cost of something like $400 for a fairing set. Vacuum/oven processing adds a LARGE amount of labor... and it just gets a little pricey. Can't escape the fact that quality without compromise does cost a bit more. Keep in mind, we buy our materials in multiple-ton orders by the truckload. I can't imagine the cost of single-roll purchases for a manufacturer. $2500-$3000 for a set of first-quality graphite bodywork is not out of the question - and that's without even looking at what Al is asking (or Ilmberger) "Bucket-and-brush" carbon parts will be much less expensive - but heavier and more brittle. | ||

The CF full fairing on the bike at the IMS show was $1,600 plus. I do believe that is a Buell offering. | ||

That fairing was just for the fairing. I was kinda/sorta figuring the cost of fairing, seat, fender, ducted airbox... $1600 for that fairing would be about right. I know Al has put a TON of thought and development effort into the configuration that American Sport Bike is going to sell... what can I say? He's an engineer (don't hold it against him, he can't help himself) |
