At this time of night/day, Tas and I are amongst the only ones on this Board who are awake!  Looking over the 2009 Owner's Manual (link provided on this Board, thanks very much for that), I was more than a little surprised to see the shift points set out in MPH rather than RPM. Just like the manual for my 1972 OHC Pinto, which not only was so long ago but had no tach, so MPH was the only option then. Further, that the shift points are VERY low when defined in RPM. I mean, for a performance bike and all. I'd find it hard to believe that ANYONE on this Board was following the Manual's recommendation on this one (which BTW also says no clutchless shifting allowed). My current bike gets shifted @ 5,000 revs or so, up or down; and so by default that's also my cruising RPM. | ||

The shifting points (I assume) are written for maximum fuel economy, EPA emissions, max engine life - without regard to performance. Similar to recommended tire pressures. To get shift points based on performance, you'd have to look at a dyno chart to see where torque/HP peak. Just my $0.02 (devalued for deflation and the weak dollar on the International Market) | ||

They are way off. You'd be lugging it if you follow those recommendations. It appears to me the shifting points are a carry - over from the XB manuals and need to be revised for this high revving engine. Calling Court? I know he has connections to get these things corrected. | ||

It's really incredible that a brochure is even online now days. Most manufactures don't even give manuals. It's amazing times that Buell updates this brochure every now and then. I'm still waiting for the recall notice on my 1958 BMW. That is an accurate statement. FYI, did you check out the oil change section? IN 1979 I helped a guy get a can of an oil (under warranty) when the TV news was saying there was a oil shortage. I think Hondas were being delivered without oil at that time. Buell was innovative then, and now. A good example now is how we were the first to develop the "Six Pack" Thats where if you get six recalls done in one visit we let you punch a Harley Customer of your choice. (this was a parody, and nothing more. I have been practicing mine. Court's help is priceless as he goes above and beyond to help others and will have a nice spot in heaven for doing onto others... . And my point was, in addition to the low shift points, that I feel Buell should be giving shift points in RPM, not MPH. I wasn't envisioning max power type shift points, so much as good-for-the-engine shift points in RPM. And maybe my orientation comes from where I live; because, as a certified driving instructor here, I can say that Victoria considers driving a vehicle in a manner contrary to the Owner's Manual to being out of control of the vehicle. For example, my training was that Victorians are not, on paper, permitted to skip-gear change on a manual car; that is, shift from, say, starting out in 2nd and shifting directly to 4th. And that's because, my instructor said, the Owner's Manual shows shift points starting in 1st and proceeding sequentially (in a car). Everything's illegal here except gambling and hookers (I know, sometimes they're the same)(Even voting is compulsory, with an associated fine)! I'm able to use those shift points with no problems. Not that I follow them explicitly, but they're pretty close to what I do when I'm just putting around. I'm generally in 6th by 50mph or so. However, I do agree that with vehicles equipped with tachs that RPMs make more sense and is easier to follow than MPH, if for no other reason than it's more consistant. As an example, the shift points in the manual generally equate to up-shifting around 4,000rpm. |
