I have had all recall work done. Last week I had a new clutch cover (the REV-B) installed as I was weeping brake fluid and the cover was discolored. The dealer didn't install the piston - have to go back this weekend for that.

Anyway - on my way home - the bike starts making this TERRIBLE noise - literally sounded like a box of rocks in the tranny.

I was in first @ 3000 RPM or so. I quickly engaged clutch and the noise went away. I pulled off on to the shoulder and inspected the bike. Nothing falling off, no obvious boo-boo anywhere. I checked fluids - oil, clutch, brake - all fine (showed full).

I fired it back up - no noise this time. Got stuck in traffic and was engine braking in first - noise came back for a couple seconds then went away.

I remember someone else posting about a "box of rocks sound" - but can't find it. I have spoken to my dealer - they have no clue. So - will be dropping her off tomorrow in hopes they will get a clue.

On an aside: I know lots of us (me included) have been frustrated with the lack of knowledge the dealers have demonstrated re: the 1125R and 1125CR (or Buells in general). It dawned on me that one of the very reasons we love these bikes is also why they are not always as "up" on the technology as we would expect. The Buell tech at my dealership does both V-Rods and Buells (all Buells). They sell more V-Rods than Buells. While the 1125R and the V-Rod are both water cooled - that is about the only similarity. Even though he has been to the school - a lot of this stuff is learned as you go. If he only sees one 1125R a month - but maybe 20 V-Rods - he will be a little sharper on the V-Rods. Anyway - I am cutting them a lot of slack - but would like some pointers from fellow badwebbers to guide him where to look.

Speculation was that the starter was grinding....

Hmmm, just a WAG.

If the dealer had the baseplate off then it is possible to slightly dislodge the plug wire.

If that is the case, the intermittent misfire would make it sound like a "box of rocks"


I share your concern regarding dealers. I picked mine up form the 12.4K service today and I was apprehensive. However it seems the dealer did a great job.

Time and patience will pay off here.

Rod bearing(s). Drain the oil and look for a LOT of flakes of gold pouring out with the oil. If no gold, you're golden. If flaky, then time for new bearings.
