i was out riding today on my way home i pulled over for a snack. when i got back on my bike and took off i looked down and the tack was reading over 12000 rpm. i was a little freaked and pulled over and shut the bike off and the tack only went down to 6000 rpm. no clue how it happened, it had been reading fine all day. i was only about twenty miles from home at the time so i just rode home, when i got there i turned the bike on and off several times and every time the tack would go down a little closer to zero. eventually it went back to zero without the bike being started. has this happened to anyone else? does anyone know why something like happened and do i need to be worried?

I saw a wrecked 1125R at a dealership and strangely enough the tach needle was frozen at 4500 RPM... weird. You'd think when things shut down, the needle would go to zero.

I'd take it in... some folks have had their displays replaced with an '09 version, under warranty. Upside is they get a gear indicator...

Does the gear indicator work automatically if you plug it into the 2008? Is there a little brain in the displays that measures speed and RPM, then compute a gear? Would the different gearing btw the R and CR cause a problem or inaccuracy?

I've heard that merely plugging in the '09 display makes it work in the '08s. Maybe it's a calculation like you're saying, so no sensor is needed. I would think that you'd just pick "R" or "CR" somewhere in the settings and it would all magically work right...

Fresno, the 09 cluster uses a calculation to determine the gear you're in. Just swapping the cluster makes it work, nothing else needed.

Hmmmm....maybe i need to root for mine to break. What is the cost of a new cluster i wonder?

Harlan, go look at one, maybe you'll like it better.
I'm getting a new IC next week, already on order, my "Toggle" switch died on me.

I've gotten used to seeing CT and AT with my tach and speedo, I'll miss one of them.

Yes, a bad design change--but a gear indicator would be cool. I think. I am pretty good a knowing where I am by feel, maybe I would become dependent on the GI? Never had one before.

only bad in the sense that it may be why the tack was reading off, good in the sense that is was fun as hell

I'm not so sure I'd want a gear indicator... distracting... don't want to glance down instead of looking through a turn.

I feel the same way about the Speedometer!

Pesky readouts.

That's a "shift indicator/warning light"
