I've got a business partner that is willing to go in on this if I get a good enough response and it can be done for the right price. Would $50 US shipped anywhere in the continental US be fair? Billet aluminum spools, SS hardware and instructions on how to do it. From what I see, it would be 1) secure the bike, 2) jack it up, 3) remove the rear wheel, 4) drill out from inside since there's a boss in the casting and it looks like it lines up straight across and was quite possibly even designed just for this. 5) install bolt, spool, washer and nut. 6) reinstall rear wheel. done. | ||

Just an FYI... Pit Bull's new 1125R rear stand has these "wrap around" rollers to secure the swing arm without spools... got me one of these recently. It allows the rear wheel to be removed, too. But if your spools are inexpensive enough, it might be cheaper to go with them and a spool rear stand. The Pit Bull 1125R stand retails for $150 at American Sportbike:  | ||

It'd be great to have another Badweb sponsor and I hope you understand the concerns about using Badweb for free market research - especially researching a product line that competes directly with one or two established sponsors. Free Advertising - or mentioning products with links to sales/websites is also an iffy deal. NO - I AM NOT any official here, just another user/abuser of Badweb - just the above statements come from this issue of "free advertising" or "market research" having come up many times in the past. I actually PAID for Glendale HD/Buell's presence here out of my own pockets ... since Glendale (and Antelope Valley and Bartels) all support my racing so I'd have no conflicts if I did some "pimping" for them. Also IF I decided to market my own bodywork and goodies, I'd be able to do it through Glendale. I see you're PM-ing Blake... cool deal! I'm going to be doing the same thing for a new upcoming racing sponsor too. | ||

I'm getting the impression that it's a bad idea to try to build a better/cheaper mousetrap here. Personally, I had already made the set I have and saw the ones from Trojan. Mine are a little rough compared to his. I didn't make mine to look pretty, I did it to hold up my bike so I can change the rear tire. It's kinda like that turbo car muffler someone welded up for their bike. He obviously didn't care what it looked like, he was after something else specific, and as I recall, it was just a particular sound. I didn't design this spool for anyone else and I really didn't care what it looked like, I just wanted it to work. I also realize that it's a limited market, since the 2008 models didn't come with them. Not a big deal really. I honestly don't want to make 10,000 of these things. Sure, the money would be nice, but think of all that work. | ||

Dean - I know that myself, and likely anyone else here, doesn't want to push you away from small business venture. Having a degree in entreprenuership, I would love nothing more than everyone who had an idea and the drive to start a new company actually do so. If you really feel strongly about making these spools, then I say go for it, so long as you understand the hurdles you have (as outlined by other posters). But with that info, run some numbers to see if it makes sense - would the cost to sell them be less than the profit you could make? And don't forget to pay YOURSELF first - your time isn't free. That has to be factoered in as well. If you want to make them merely because you just enjoy it, then that's a different deal altogether, and you'll have to weigh all the pros and cons to it. Personally, I have a number of ideas that I'd like to develop into some kind of business, and most are rather novel if I say so myself. But I lack the time, space and drive needed to really see these ideas through, so for now, they wait. | ||

And then compete with a couple dozen firmly established companies who have been selling spools and sliders for years? Tough thing to break into, you think? Attack, Woodcraft, ProTek, Pingel, are a few that come to mind (I've used them all) and some no-name sliders that I've picked up at the track after a get-off and repair same day. I saw them on ebay this morning. I have thought about the spools, because I already have a pitbull rear stand for spools. I was going to buy the 1125r stand but the spools would save me $100. I just worry about drilling and taping the swing arm. I need to do something because my rear tire is getting worn out. | ||

IIRC the Trojan spools have the back side contoured for the side of the swingarm. | ||
