Has anyone experienced clunky shifting? I've changed my oil, Syn 3 20-50 twice in roughly 1000 miles. It was mid 80's and for the first, say, 2 1/2hrs. shifting was smooth and quiet, like hot knife through butter, like a baby's... well you get the idea.

I was really feelin' it, the ride, the road, the surroundings. Then we stopped at about 3 hrs. got a drink and proceeded on. From there all my shifts, were still smooth but noticeably clunky sounding, both up and down.

This happened on a couple other rides as well, similar temp. etc. Just seems after it heats up it's not as smooth sounding.

I don't want to bad mouth Syn 3, cause I don't have any facts to blame the oil, but does this sound familiar to anyone and what might be the cause or is it normal?If you've not experienced it what oil are you using?

Mine seems to smooth out when it gets warm... stock oil, 400 miles. Not really a big enough sample to be useful tho... sorry.

Brian(Palerider), I found occasionally I get shifting like a granny and get a clunk. If I shift quickly as soon as I grab the clutch and not let off the throttle its smooth as silk. Sometimes I wonder if I even get it released fast enough but that way its really smooth with no clunks, just a snick. Same with down shifting. Also using Mobil 1 15-50. Just my take on it. Bob

Sort of presumptive that the drink was alcoholic.

And even if I did have an alcoholic drink, that would make my trans sound different?
I don't drink alcoholic beverages when I ride!
I was just interested if anyone had experienced the same clunky sounding shifting.

Thanks for the input Pridayr and Bob. I don't know Bob,even when I shifted like granny,within the first several hours it was still shifting as you said, with a snick. I hadn't really altered my shifting style which is why I thought it strange, or that it might have something to do with heat.

i wouldn't call my shifting clunky, but sometimes i have to shift twice to hit a gear, or neutral becomes nearly impossible to find.

clunky? not so much.

Yeah, definitely experienced the lost neutral also. That works good with the sun shining making the neutral light hard to see.

i find i get clunky shifting when i pull the clutch in alot like u do with a harley. with a slower gear shift.
but if i barely pull the clutch in and snap up the gear its really smooth.
its tough because ive experienced alot of times in accelaration going from 1st to 2nd that id go into nuetral. which is annoying and worrying.

but if i think of clunky and not know how the slipper clutch works then i would always think it was clunky because the slipper is loud.

It would be interesting to learn how this bike shifts with an air shifter the drag racers use. Anybody done that yet? I'm gonna bet it is slick and sure. Bob

im thinkin all u need is the race ecm. since it offers quick shift options.
and if u got a ahdra membership to race in there races. u can buy the race ecm.
i wonder if it compares to a electric or air shifter

Shifting in the lower gears can be louder than the upper gears.
Shifting quickly, as Jmr1283 describes, can avoid crashing the gears.
Make sure your clutch fluid is at a good level. Too little fluid will cause shifting problems.

Generally I find this transmission to be very nice and smooth. I shift without using the clutch about half the time. Works great above 2nd gear. Possible below 3rd, but definitely rough/uncomfortable.

Does the lower RPM clunky off/on throttle thing go away with the solenoidectomy?
No, but the latest computer update should help.

My only complaint about the gearbox is that i find myself in neutral when shifting from 1st to 2nd often.}

I never have that problem... If anything it's almost impossible to get to neutral from 1st to 2nd on mine, I almost always have to get it from 2nd to 1st.

I do have that problem on my wife's V-Rod, but the mechanism has way more play in it.
