Seems like the dealers have a real challenge on their hands. The 08's with their well documented issues are stacking up. Already slashed the price, and 675 to 1k of accessories on the tank. Still not moving.

Thoughts on what they'll do? My $0.02:

The ecm fix needs to get done to every one on every floor. Where any one of em will light and fire perfectly every time. Then advertise them as "fixed".

They need to do something, fast. If they wait till all 7, 12, 10, or however many 08's find happy homes before rolling the 09's that will be a real challenge to their infrastructure.

More than anything else, I really want to see Buell break into the really big time, and as we all seem to be ready with an opinion , let's put our heads to this, and see if we can find a way to help em out.

What would make it worth it for YOU to buy an 08 1125r?

Rob

I would pay MSRP otd for an 09 in red or white.

$8500 otd for an 08. Plus 1k in accesories.

I'm in the same boat as schutte. Ill wait for a CR or white 09 and pay MSRP for the deals right now..But I would go for a fixed 08 at 9,700 OTD and 675 accessories...The fix is big with me, and the black and blue colors dont do what the new ones do for me either.

I must be confused. My 08 is not broke... It starts, runs like a scalded dog, handles great. What am I missing?

Same as any other bike. They should put the '09 models out with a strict MSRP price tag. Then park the '08 right beside it with a big reduced tag on it. People coming in to maybe buy the '09 would likely be tempted to have the '08 for less money. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with the '08 that would make an '09 more attractive to ME. Besides, I really like the 25th anniversary badging.

A think a price difference of $6,000 would point me to an 08 over an 09.

My heart is waiting for a RR, if it has the right looks (bigger tail - integrated front pieces) I'm in for $25,000

+1, bpt!

As far as the 'R' goes, I have grown to really like the denim frame. I had thought black would be better until I saw the '09. The red or white would be my choice in the '09. Now, the 'CR' is a different story. That bike gets more exciting every time I look at it.

I am glad I bought the '08. Mine runs very well, and I have enjoyed it for nine months now. I had a problem with the stator, which Buell handled with their own people at my dealership. Not only that, I just noticed that they re-started the warranty from the date of that repair. I have been able to correspond directly with these folks in Wisconsin, and couldn't be more satisfied with the way they have stood behind their product. Plus, the 25th Anniversary bit made a difference with me, as did the chance to finally be first on a historic bike. I've enjoyed helping them break new ground.

The leftover '08's will not sell themselves, and I do think that some dealers really thought they would. My dealer has yet to even ask me if I am interested to LOOK at one of the two they have on the floor, and they know I have a Buell. Who could be an easier sell?

BMC will have to put a hell of an incentive on these bikes, and make sure they are sorted. I am not a huge fan of the black/blue, or even the thought of a bike that needs coolant, BUT at 8K OTD and keep the accessories it would make me think. My '07 9R is paid for....

Buell is a hell of a bike, but I really think BMC would have done much better to make sure the dealers that have the franchise actually know, service and SELL the bikes in order to get them. The H2O bikes fill a niche, but if the thought of having to buy one from a HD store turned me off, I'd love to know what a Duc or HonYamKawZuki guy thinks.

This '08 situation will be interesting to watch.

Ah...so you want to see Buell and its dealers go out of business. Cool. Or maybe you want to make sure they don't have enough $ for R&D, so they can "fix" any perceived "issues".

I have yet to ride an 1125 with any of these "issues", and I've ridden dozens, both track and street. Maybe I'm just lucky. I also have yet to ride a Buell (other than my 98 S1W with it's over-frame header and *narrow* seat) that puts out "too much heat" on my leg. Maybe I just accept the fact that I'm sitting on an internal combustion engine (pretty standard on a motorcycle) rather than driving a Buick.

I agree, MSRP for '09 and *some* discounting for '08s if they're next to each other. That's common sense. 50% off, though?

if i were a dealer i would do this:

'09 MSRP

'08 discount 2k and free extended warranty for piece of mind to the buyer of said 1125R....if buell is confident that they have resolved '08 issues this should not even be a problem?

just my $.02 but i'd take the deal....if i didn't love my 9 so much!

" a price difference of $6,000 would point me to an 08 over an 09."

Oooooo I like the way you think.

The corrections need to be made and then incredible deals offered. Better than the MSRP -25% that made many dealers choke at the mere mention. But I see '07 XB's at retail+ still. Sadly pathetic. It will probably take continued crappy economy to finally alter the HD sales mindset that used/old model year bikes are still worth msrp,

So to sum up:

Fix the perceived issues, show a significant price reduction, with both rebates and discounts, and some further incentives, i.e. accessories, and/or a free or cheap extended warranty.

Just hope somebody up the chain at Harley/Buell sees these issues, and gets everybody in the dealer network on the same page.

Thanks for the use of your grey matter!

Yeah, I never thought about the extended warranty. That's a pretty good idea. The great thing about BMC, however, is that they wouldn't even require a warranty for this big problems, because they care more about their people and their name than making a buck.

very true....and Buell has proven that many times over, but once again peace of mind can be invaluable and with a well built product such as Buell, cost could be $0 to them to help sell the '08 stock.

I dont know why everybody is beating up on the 08s.Mine runs like a raped ape.And I like the 08 black ones ,Red is kindof tacky and white and blue????the 09 black one has in my opinon to much black.I think they need to relook the whole color scheme.Black and orange was sweet. What about a lower fairing like on the xbs .And what happened to all the translucent bodywork on the 07s 08s that stuff was cool.To sum it up the 08 is the best ticket right now as long as the tune is a little better but even if not she still runs great.Maybe I got a good one???

Not being able to sell out a new bike design in the first year is not a good omen. If the hoopla over a new design couldn't help them sell, this model may have a short run. Why would a dealer order 09s if he's sitting on 08s? Non-current bikes can and do sell for 50% of MSRP - typically not after one year, but after two or three years of sitting in the warehouse. The recession we're in only makes things worse for the 1125.

i think you guys are overestimating how much margin there is on these bikes. Most you will probably see from a dealer that has a couple of 08s left over is probably 2k off the bike be it price, accessories, or warranty. Any more than that and the dealer will get into losing money territory. Not where they want to be.

I think dealers will be willing to deal to move the bikes off the showroom floor. I am in total agreement that most people thinking there is more of a margin than really exists. We are looking for ways to price the bike to sell, but we don't want to take a hit on each one we sell.

Hi, Rob(Buell Specialist) at SkipFordyce HD/Buell in Riverside, CA. We are the #1 Buell store in the District(Southern CA/Las Vegas area) and #6 in the nation and moving up fast!(#11 Harley Davidson dealer in the nation).
I'm listening and I have sold quite a few 1125R's(we took on more than we could sell at the time, about 4+ left now and probably would have sold the rest if it was not for credit issues, etc) since I came on in May. I would make sure updates on ECM are done(we have updated, 1st update, all the ECM's of the early models already, pre April/May bikes). Our models left are the last ones I believe, May models and one demo from Jan 08, 700 miles). $675 incentive ended Aug 31 and Triple 25 goes till Sep 30th.

My suggestion is we are to give the best deal in the local area on MSRP and $1000.00 in Buell parts/acc/apparell as a Gift card. So after speaking with my GM at this top store(only Buell store within a store west of the Missisippi now), we will be offering $1000.00 parts/acc incentive on 08 1125R's as a Gift card.
So to help out this plan to move all remaining 08's and make sure of the implementation of ECM updates(2nd one out anyday I here). I am listening to your's and mine suggestions. Thanks and lets get everyone on a Buell!

Would this make buying an 08 more appealing?? If the dealer included the 4 year extended service warranty, with the tire and wheel option and a Buell full face helmet or Buell Adventure jacket??

I Understand. I think that the money spent on 12-18 more months floorpan and then selling at cost makes a loser so bite the bullet and get to new stuff.

Dealers are the ones that set the number on how many they would take? I think? Or were they forced to take them? I think some one here mentioned a dealer canceled a stock order on an 09 so I'm guessing they are in charge of their inventory levels. Supply - demand; yada yada.

Teach,

An interesting angle, you have my respect for at least trying different ideas. Ideally, corporate should assist you dealers in the economic hit and orchestrate a package deal or some irresistible sale.

We do control our ordering, right now we have 3 08s on the floor, one is a demo model. But to the bikes credit, we have sold just as many of those than the rest of the buells combined for 08. Maybe if we werent in a weak economy right now they would be sold.

The $675 credit was a cool thing, worked well with other dealer discounts. I liked that.
