I Just got off the phone with the service manager from my dealer. My bike is getting the trans jet recall and new rear turn signal fixed. I asked to have them look into the gas smell, gas boiling problem. He told me that there is a new ECM update coming out on Monday 9/15} that will take care of the gas smell, hot frame, gas boiling trouble I’ve been having. Can’t wait!

That's really interesting.

I wonder what else (if anything) it entails...

It's amazing to me that some software change can fix so many things.

I for one will wait at the end of the line this time , and will learn from my mistakes .

I had the first re-flash done in April or early May , changed more than I wanted it to . I for one was not a happy camper .

My bike is now running great , thanx to a fellow BWBueller who shall remain nameless , I can deal with a little extra heat , but will patiently wait till the jury is out and opinions are made .

If it aint broke ...dont fix it !!!

A bike having stumbling problems is "broke" in my opinion. The fuel consumption... well... I can manage, but it'd be a VERY nice perk.

I'll get the flash, but I have a backup of my old one and can always set it back if I have to. But I won't get it until after I do my track day. It's running great right now and I don't need it having to relearn everything at the track. Thinking of which, I should go make another backup while it's running so well.

This new "ECM update" is news to me. I know that the calibration from the product program is the only update to the 1125R that I know of. The next updated calibration, to my knowledge, is due out later this fall, but no exact release date has been determined.

I'd ask for the printout showing the previous & updated calibration IDs. If you're updated to calibration ID M3HUS02Y, that's been out for a while.

Sorry, I don't think that is an accurate statement. You cannot go back.

All the comments/complaints/work put in this forum has certainly encouraged Buell to deliver product fixes and enhancements. Thanks to all of you.

extreme lean = extreme heat

This does not make intuitive sense to me. But based on your other posts, you seem informed. Pls explain if you have a chance.

Fuel cools the combustion process. More fuel = cooler burn. Less fuel (lean) = hotter burn and more heat. Trust me, I've donuted quite a few turbo car pistons by combining higher than stock boost and injectors that were *almost* large enough. More air requires more fuel, or you get the same lean problem.

The trick when tuning is making sure you have the right amount of fuel - rich = cooler, but it also = less power. Lean is mean - it makes more power...until you melt something. Stoich (correct mixture) is where you have the best compromise of heat and power - usually around 14.7 air to fuel, IIRC from my turbo tuning days.

To my knowledge, that calibration has not been released as of yet. I'll check my DTII on Monday to see if it has the updated calibration, but my understanding was this wasn't happening any earlier than October.

That's exactly right . . . back in the days when I was flying a great deal the drill was, upon reaching cruising altitude, to lean the fuel mixture and the way it was done was by using the cylinder head temp.

Depends on a lot of things. That curve above looks about right for a typical 4 stroke motorcycle engine, but it's different for a two stroke engine where running it richer means running more incombustible stuff through the engine (pre-mix or injection oil). A two stroke usually makes the most power right before it blows up lean.
The exact best AFR can change quite a bit depending on head design, RPMs, valve configuration, amount of valve overlap, etc. In a perfect world, stoich would be where max power occurs, but there is precious little time for every O2 molecule to find a fuel molecule. The reason why a richer than stoich mixture tends to make more power is that by putting in MORE fuel than Stoich, you increase the chances of marrying every O2 molecule to a fuel molecule. The better the combustion chamber shape, with lots of turbulence, the better the odds are of that occurring without depending on overfueling. However, putting in too much fuel starts to decrease power when some of that fuel starts displacing more O2 than needed to guarantee the marriage of the existing O2 with fuel.

I will be eager to get this ECM update. My bike has always run great...maybe a little surging under 4K, but not too bad.

However, lately it has begin to surge all the way up to 5K and its fairly pronounced. Why, after 4,000 plus miles, would my bike suddenly start surging at any RPM below 5K?

Mmmm... Talking about turbos and fuel/air ratios... It all makes me so happy! I know this is a buell forum, but my Turbo Mustang GT(2005), just made 716 rwtq, and 656 rwhp on pump gas and 19.7 lbs of boost. The best part is this was on a Mustang dyno, so it made the corrections for heat and PA (accuracy is the name of the game). I want to get the bike on a dyno so that I can tune it myself, I've waited long enough for Buell to do it!

DTx, How more miles you make on the bike, the more fuel your bike want. Your engine is running in. What is your setup?. Stock exhaust?. 3th party exhaust?. It’s normal that it will surge more when your mileage is getting up.

My experience is with Buell on the dyno that if I make a fuel map at that moment, the bike runs great.. Only after 4000 miles or more depending on the type of exhaust (if the filling of the exhaust is out etc etc) the bike wants more fuel.

So you have to balance if you make a fuel map with a lot of little stuff and calculate this in your fuel map.

What I never understand is that the stock fuel map in your Buell is not calculated for the amount of mileage after your bike is running in?. It's based on emission numbers at that moment?. And then of course there is the O2 sensor, it wants to read 14.7 A/F.. This is almost a impossible task When you look at all the variables, of a gasoline running motorcycle..

Easy,

My bike is stock...even the muffler. I wonder if my O2 sensors are getting wore out?

"Sorry, I don't think that is an accurate statement. You cannot go back."

I found that out the hard way , and would have done anything to have done so .

"And then of course there is the O2 sensor, it wants to read 14.7 A/F.. This is almost a impossible task"

Thats why my 02 sensors are disconnected , combine that with a few minor adjustment's , and mine is smooth and running great ! }

The last reflash was to make all kinds of improvements , for some it did , for many others it made certain improvements while simultaneously creating many new and unwanted issues .

For that reason I will wait and see.....

I am anxiously awaiting the re-flash and will be the first in line at my dealer to get it. Of course the line is not that long. I have the only '08 the dealer sold.

interesting that the 1125CR is in the dealerships now and they most likely have the same ecm as the 1125R....one would think the "flash" update is close at hand
