Sorry about the 'Second service' thread. My mistake.

Im about to hit my -Third- service interval, and wanting to do the service myself. This one involves adjusting the valves.

Has anybody else done this? and if so... what are the lessons learned?

Hmmm...you might be the first Badwebber to take this on! I am sure it is not that difficult if you know what you are doing, but I suppose you can say that about anything.

I am interested in the dealer price for the valves and also the fork oil.

The fork oil change is not due until the 24K service. Price ought to be close to what it costs for an XB.

I am taking mine to the dealer for the 12K service for the reasons that I am unsure of my ability to do it myself,I don't have the shim set and I want my warranty to stay intact.

I thought that in earlier threads it was said that all you have to do is move rocker arms to the side to change shims after checking valve stem to rocker clearance. Am I understanding you removed the cam/cams? Please explain. My service manual is on the way but a few weeks out.

Not that easy. Earlier posts indicate you have to unbolt motor mounts and rotate it down to remove valve covers. Once you get the covers off, it should be a piece of cake to shim the valves.}

To check your Valve Clearance you only need to remove your Valve Covers. But to get to the Valve Covers you need to rotate the engine down to check the front cyl and up to check the rear cyl.
If you need to change the shims all you have to do is to pop off the intake/exhaust follower’s spacer with a screw driver and slide followers out of the way to access the shim.

Granted this is a vague description. To rotate the engine down you need to remove the Air Box, radiator pod covers, rear belt pulley and cover, Muffler, front fender, footpeg brackets,etc. (see your service manual) there is a lot more.

Getting shims should be easy; every HD dealer should stock them. The V-Rod uses the same shims.

For the above average mechanic this should be an all day job. If you have never tackled a job like this, take your bike to your dealer.

I guessing that a trained mechanic should have the service done in 2~3 hours.

rotating an XB engine up and down is 2.1 hours.......

Rotating an XB engine is way faster than 2.1 hours. I have a new title at work(Exhaust beeatch) as I have been changing XB exhausts on a regular basis,and did a pushrod seal on a hotrod XB the other day.Definitely faster.Header change on an XB with engine rotate and back about 40 mins. Take off seat and airbox covers (4 torx) then lower airbox(4 torx) upper and rear lower tie rod bolts (2 bolts 7/16 head) 3 1/4 allens for front assembly holding oil cooler,remove pulley cover (3 torx) L/S air scoop(3 torx),muffler has 2 clamps rear 7/16 deep socket ,one mount front and a clamp,jack up engine and remove front isolator bolt, lower engine,really much faster than it sounds.

I suggest to make sure shims are actually available, before rotating the engine...
Just in case a valve is out of spec.

Lars,
Been out and about... a lot of changes
Sold the Ducati to a friend, it was much fun to work on especially the valve adjustments...
I came to realize that I needed an "appliance" more then anything else, so I got an SV1000s.
Still trying to sell the firebolt, I put 10 miles on it in the past couple of months...
Also quit my job, to focus 100% on school and if things go according to plan, I should be in graduate school by fall 2009. Exciting times to come!

I did get a chance to ride the 916 yesterday, and I am still kicking myself for giving it up. But it is for the best...

Last time I was in the dealership, I remembering that I glanced up at the service board and saw something in the neighborhood of 500 bucks for the 3rd service. I can verify this in a couple days....but I'm pretty sure it was right about there.

Pricy service, no!?!

I dunno, I had high hopes for you when you took on that Duc engine. Now you wussed out with the SV (J/K). I think the 916 was going to be a money pit, even when doing your own work.

Certainly no Rotax... But it gets me from point A to point B.
Pricey, yes, I did a quick tally of my spending on the 916 and it came to something close to $1500...
And it still needed to get three rockers replated (another $240ish and a week of downtime).
Fortunately because it is still "in the family" I can still tinker when I have the time (and no $$ on parts).
I definitely plan on getting another Ducati
superbike when school is over with and I am
a bit more settled down

Unfortunately the XB and I are on rather bad terms at the moment...
Not much going for it in terms of reliability,
although now that virtually everything has broken on it and been repaired/replaced
it should be reliable...
If anything I have the SV for piece of mind.
Still have not decided for sure though,
may still end up keeping the firebolt
Although the extra money would be nice.

I haven't worked on an 1125 but the Firebolt only takes about 15-20 minutes to rotate the engine down... Then about the same to put it back.

If I had an 1125 you can bet I would do it myself : ).

That is always the problem with the Ducati
Desmoquattro, however , once the megacycled rockers are installed, the problem won't re-occur.

Also once the valve are set they rarely will need adjustment.

Sorry to hear you had to let it go,perhaps when you are done with school (which should be your 1st priority)another Buell or Ducati will first on your list.

Ok, both of mine are broken so off to work on them I go
