See attached pics.

The plastic cover above the clutch cover is warping and is very discolored. I smell burning plastic every time the bike is running....whats going on here folks

Looks like the heat from the rear header is melting it. Have your dealer look at it. Should be covered under warranty I'd figure.

Yes I figured that out too. My question is the ever important WHY. If I just get the cover replaced, its just gonna happen again..

Maybe the rear O2 sensor is bad and it's running even leaner than it's designed to. That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

Stands a good chance the rear could be leaner. I'd hope the dealer would check that when you bring it to their attention.

I have a source that could one off the plastic in high quality carbon fiber! Would take a couple weeks, would this warp as well? My piece is still in great condition, mine be destroyed in one off templates, but all up for taking one for the team if it withstood high heat. Just let me know.

Well it also has the 1125r sticker over the right headlight instead of the left for some reason.

I don't know that a carbon version would fare better. That may depend on the resin used. An aluminum version may be better and/or wrapping the pipe like some have already done.

Much smaller one on the pre-production models.

Okay, so others are having this issue. Is it detrimental to the bike to ride it like this? Have I done any damage to my bike? I already have over 8300kms and just put 2600 on in five days on some of the best roads in Canada. I bagged the hell outta the bike, and it was GLORIOUS....

Mine is discolored. I don't think it is anything to worry about at all. Just means there is some serious heat generated in the area. Better the heat shield burning than your leg, right?

but what about the massive amount of warping on the part...it is sposed to be flat, not rippled..

I don't think it is warping. My shield looks like yours.

I was looking at some of the pictures over on this thread:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/369546.html?1213796196

and they look pretty much the same as the one above.

I'd say now we know where the hot foot came from.

Mine looks identical @ 5000 miles.

Even fully wrapped primary tubes show this. Wrapped at approx 3k miles, now at 5k...this composite looks the same as my example.

It appears to be made of some sort of fiber glass or phenolic something to withstand the heat they knew was going to be there. It isn't ordinary plastic by any means.

If "they" knew it was going to be there then there would not be cause for this thread's origin?

I, for one, think this might be another learning curve.

So proved the burnt heatshield?

This seems like a pretty insignificant issue. I didn't even notice until I read this thread and looked closely at the shield.

Mine looks like that too after 700 miles. Looks like a good piece to toss along with the belt guards.

Fresno...-1 to your last post. Of coarse we all have our right to post before and after affects.

This is simple heat management folks.

Why would I drop my engine out of my 11 and wrap said primaries if this (Heat) was not a concern?

If not one tester, back in the day, voiced a complaint, then why would this part be added in defense? Never mind, we all know the answer to that one.

Why not then, prove the said fix prior to release? Simple, time and money.

I am in no way against this cause...in fact, I'm all for it.

I just cannot understand the somewhat bias of some posting when there seems to be credible cause arguing such.

I'm also sure a mediator is right behind me now so I will stop this post now! Well, almost.

mm

ps. It is the negatives that promote further positives to become. It's called perfecting a new model! Argue it if that is your intent. Offer experienced information, as an owner or wrench of said model, if you seek to promote an improvement!

We are getting way off the reason I posted this thread. This is happening with most of the bikes from the evidence above.

IMHO this is not acceptable. There are how many hundreds of models of motorcycles, and I am sure they all deal with heat management issues. I do NOT want to smell burning plastic every time I ride. I also do not want to look at hideous discoloration every time I wash the bike.

Either the burnt smell is something else in my case, then I need to know what it might be. I have gone over the bike tooth and nail and this has to be the cause.

As I said, I did 5 long days of very hard riding and I have another trip coming up and now am not sure about whether or not to take the bike.

I never said the heat was an insignificant issue. As a matter of fact, heat is the #1 lingering issue I have with this bike.

The topic of this thread is about the top of the heat shield. THAT is pretty insignificant to me and obvious as to the cause.

Agreed Fresno. I am asking WHY and how do we fix it.
