My shift light never turns on. What rpms should I expect to see my tach light up?

I got the one from Al at American sport bike and you have to program it,

also works as a voltmeter,

is this the one you have,

I programed mine to come on at 4,000 rpms to 10,000 rpms and each light comes on every 1000 rpms so 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,

also has different modes,

is this the one you have?

Mike

No, I'm talking about the stock shift light that makes the tach needle light up

Have noticed if it comes on when you turn it on and the display does a self check ? Mine will illuminate during this at around 10K.

Ya 10K it should come on, just hold pressure up on the gear selector and when the rev limiter hits the first time it will POP into the next gear, no real need for a shift light. I drag her this way and it works great. I dont even pay any mind to the light any more.

They used to call them "Idiot Lights", can you take it from there?

Alright, I'll be nice. The ECM is smart enough to know if there is a load on the engine or not. When there is no load it lights up at ~6,000 to let you know you shouldn't do that.

Too many weld and paint fumes I guess.

I guess you didn't drudge through all those boring warnings in the owners manual then, because it's big and bold in there with lots of exclamation points. Doesn't say why of course. Just that it's bad.

I think it's in the same section as the break-in procedure IIRC. I read through the manual cover to cover 3 or 4 times over a few days to make sure I didn't miss anything after dropping out all that money on Delilah.

Also, it's not a shift light, it's an RPM engine damage impending warning light, AKA Idiot Light. : D

Dont just rev at a stoplight, do a burnout! Break her loose in second and you will hit the limiter (10k) instantly, and the speedo will show 92mph. Lots of smoke too! Then you can look for the needle to light up.

Here's the simplest explanation I could come up with as to why you shouldn't rev the engine in neutral or with the clutch in.

When you are normally reving driving down the road, the power is being transferred from the engine to the transmission to the rear wheel to the road. In essence, the power is being transferred from the engine to the road.

However, if you rev the engine in neutral or with the clutch in, the power transfers from the engine to the transmission and stops there. Since there is no output for the power (i.e. the road), the excess power stays between the engine and the transmission and is bled off in vibration.

I wouldn't be too concerns with the occasional short revs at a stoplight. The danger comes with more sustained revs in neutral over periods of time.

haha, hey guys, this is much much simpler than everyone is making it out to be. The reason the rev light comes on at 6k when free reving engine is because of how slow the tach needle moves compared to engine rev. the engine will spin up to 10 k FAR faster then the big ol needle with it's teeny tiny servo can move 180 degrees to indicate 10k rpm. the light however, is instantaneous. when the needle is receiving the message to indicate 10k rpm, it starts moving toward 10 k rpm. when the shiftlight gets the signal to indicate 10k rpm, it lights. no delay. when the tach is showing 6k and the shiftlight is on, the engine is at 10k. this is a problem with almost any electrical tach in any vehicle. it's not a problem when the powertrain is in gear because the engine can't rev as fast. be carefull!

Hey PX if you remove the seat you can get to the rear heads coil right over the spark plug so made the connection there, real easy to to.
