I hope somebody can clarify this
for me.
All the motorcycle mags are ga-ga over the new 1098R. Apparently claiming what a marvel the bike is. Don't get me wrong, I've owned a 916, and Ducati's have been the sport twin benchmark for a long time.
I was looking at the 1098 as well, but am happier than hell that I waited for 1125R.
Here's my question though.Since the 1098R is actually an 1198cc engine, not mention the traction control. When are these mags going to start profiling how the 1125R challenged the Duc's, and that only the 1098R's out of their entire line-up have been able to hang with them?
Also, what are the regulations regarding the different classes in AMA, WSBK, etc, and the chances of seeing Buell fielding an 1125R in these venues?
After Germany and France, I'm itching to see some American Thunder, by way of Austria, take it to some of these "elite" clowns.

As far as reviews...
I ran into Peter Bisselle (motorcycle.com) at the AHMRA races at Willow Springs last weekend and asked him what's up with the review of the 1125R (he was sporting a Buell T-Shirt out there). They are doing a 3 bike shoot out in about two weeks. The bikes participating in the shoot out are:
1125R, 1098S and a Benelli.

Higbee is racing an 1125R at Willow this coming Sunday. And keep in n mind, the 1125Rs are in the MotoST races. The were very much in the hunt until a belt failure occurred at the first race of the season in Daytona. I think the next MotoST round is this weekend at VIR. It'll be interesting to see what happens there.

Then there is Crevier on an 1125R from Deely's in Canadian Superbike this season.

Oh yeah, we're at the beginning of a very interesting season

I am planning to watch Crevier in Calgary at the Canadian Superbike Championships in July. I am making a 4 hour trip with my 1125r just to see the Buell race team (perhaps score some free swag!)

The new AMA Superbike and WSBK rules would make it technically legal for the 1125R to compete right now, as is.

. . . however, realistically, the current bike likely wouldn't be competitive. The 1098R is putting out about 180 HP, and the inline 4's are probably better than that.

The 1125R's seem to be doing amazingly well in some of the European races, and that's very encouraging, but the riders and competition at that level aren't really at the level of WSBK or AMA Superbike. I also don't know the level of tuning of those European bikes. It's quite possible that they had modifications that wouldn't be legal in Superbike. The new Superbike rules prevent the level of tuning on twins that was possible in previous years, so an homologation bike would be just about a necessity.

If Buell is serious about racing at those levels, I think they'll have to make an "homologation" bike similar to the 1098R (or at least the 1098S).

Canadian Superbike should be very interesting because the rules of that series allow engine modifications up to 180 HP (185?) without homologating those revisions into a production bike.

The Canadian series could be an excellent test bed for a future 1125RR.

Based on the information just released yesterday, the new AMA management will keep the Superbike rules, so if Buell wants to compete at that level, they're going to have to make a commitment. One interesting element of the new rules is that teams in Superbike (LiterBike by the new terminology) will have to have 4 riders. That will require a much higher investment than Buell has ever done before.

But if Buell chooses to, they should be able to race in all three classes (not counting the "specialty" race) of next year's AMA - Moto ST, 600 Superbike (very similar to Formula Xtreme) and LiterBike (Superbike).

It all comes down to what they want to do and what they can afford to do.

I don't expect them to jump in completely just yet, but they have shown a long term commitment over the past 10 years or so, and they are slowly growing into a more serious racing contender.

As sales and models and money grow, there are opportunities.

Wow, that's some wishful thinking. I believe we'll find that the 1125 has trouble hanging with the base model 1098. You don't even need to bring in the S or R models. Also, if you compare Ducati's racing pedigree of results in WSBK and MotoGP to Buell's racing record, you're on thin ice badmouthing the "elite clowns". I'd like to see the 1125 compete in WSBK next year against BMW, KTM, Ducati, Aprilia, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki. Knowledge gained will only improve the bike and help them gain credibility as a manufacturer of a modern competitive "Superbike".}

While there certainly is an element of "wishful thinking" here, there has only been one occasion I'm aware of in which 1125R's have raced directly against 1098R's, and they certainly didn't do too badly for themselves:
