So I decided to take out the 1125r, some 10 bikers wanted to join up for a cruise. These guys have their gixxers all riced out, exhausts, NOS, etc. Its 45degF out, I showed up with all my gear, pucks and all. I like to be protected and warm. These guys ride in there construction boots, no socks, sweaters, etc. No problem, they seem cool. They like the 1125r, comment on how sexy it looks, very "italian". They were suprised it was a liter bike. We get on the highway through some lights. Immediately, they are cutting traffic, between lanes, all grouping at the head of the pack by the light. I followed on a few, but I got a hold of myself and remembered part of the reason why I stopped riding with people a while ago. I was looking for a "cruise", not a race competition at every light. I guess thats what they do, and I'm just getting too old. They end up losing me, I get stuck behind some slow traffic. I tried to catch up but never had a chance. At one point, I thought while I was out here, lets give this bike some juice. Got her to 130, felt great, and immediately hit the brakes to 70. I then notice a car speeding up behind me (way behind me), switching two lanes without blinks. Intuition tells me this isn't normal. This guy starts to pace me on the left, turns out its a crown vic. How convenient. Tan with hub caps, I would think it was some old geezer driving home. The tints were a dead giveaway. After 1 minute pacing, he took off. Don't know if he was admiring the bike, running my plate, or waiting for me to not notice him and punch it. /venting off | ||

I was told at that speed is a trip to jail, so hard to resist when you have the chance. I also ride alone most of the time, feels like true freedom being alone and being able to turn on a moments notice not having to worry if the other guys are going to make it, but when I ride with others I like to follow that way it clears the way for me, and with a few good guys all riding the same is nice to also do. Way to go Andre! Now those ricers are going to think you fell behind 'cuz your POS Buell couldn't keep up. Sheesh...thanks for perpetuating the stereotype!  | ||

Riding in groups can be a PITA. If your not used to the groups rules, hand and arm signals, pace etc.. then you can feel left out, or that expectation to keep up is on you. As for "ricers", well, I currently own a Hayabusa, suppose I'd fall into your category of ricer, especially since I have a full exhaust and some other nice mods on it. Do I ride like a disrespectful prick? No. I have split traffic before, but rarely, and of course its not legal here. FWIW, I'm a rider, I don't care what you ride, I can accept you for riding. I don't call a disrespectful person riding a motorcycle a ricer, or the aborted twin etc.. Squids, well, they'll brandish any make of bike, so you just have to step back and think about those group rides....is it a group ride, cruise, or race to see who gets popped first/goes down/etc? Rant off. | ||

You need to find a new group to ride with. The people I ride with always ride with a set of rules. Nothing stringent, but we want to make the ride as safe as possible. We do insist on proper riding gear. No helmet or armor? Ride somewhere else. The key is ride within your limits and we never leave a rider behind. We always have a designated tail bike, who makes sure he/she's the last bike in line. If we get separated by traffic, we have pre-determined meeting points along the way to re-group. Stay away from the squids. Find a like-minded group to ride with and you'll have a lot more fun. | ||

Easy enough. I have not yet found a group of sport-bike riders that like to enjoy the ride rather than impress and break the law in every imaginable way with disregard to other motorists. This was a new crowd that I had not met before. I'll keep my distance. I was hoping to impress with the Buell, but if your not wheeling, 'stoppie-ing' or stuning, not much else I can do in that area. Was hoping for some twisties, but NJ roads are terrible. As for ricers, I personally have a thing against too many leds and construction boots on a high performance bike (add to that riding with your helmet half way up your head). It just doesn't make sense. | ||

Cat3, you have a busa and your not an a-hole arrogant prick? all I usually hear from them is "why did you by that slow pos?" I have gotten good a snagging their keys and giving them a toss at stoplights.  I tend to ride alone or with good friends. Remember in some situations your life can be in their hands (Like when friends of said Busa rider are after you)  | ||

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about trying to impress with the Buell. I can see wanting to show off such a cool bike, but squids could care less. I now ride an RC51 because I've always wanted one. I could give a rat's ass what the squids think about it. Now, I have nothing against stunters. Believe me, I wish I could do half the tricks they can do, but they're just not my crowd. If you think NJ roads are bad, try Florida. There must be 10 good curves in the entire state. +1 on the gear. I cannot understand why anyone would ride helmet-less or not wear a basic armored jacket. It's usually the squids and lots of cruiser riders who make that choice. | ||

I moved to florida for year round riding, loved the weather but it sucked to ride a bike, at the drag strip they let this guy race in shorts, he almost flipped the bike, I do not get it like the guys who have there helmets half on, or the guys that wear novelty helmets. moved back to boston were my family is but thinking of N Caralina next, I hat taxachussetts, got my hog membership pack and they offer discounted insurance except Canada and Massachussets, out of all the states that I could live in I live in the one that sucks the most. never said anything about being responsible. I like to hoist that tire as much as the next guy.  It is just nice to see someone that doesnt think their better than anyone else because they have every speed freaks wet dream( I want one too.) | ||

Jeebus...my "ricer" comment was PURELY tongue and cheek...Hence the HUGE wink. I really don't care what brand of motorcycle you enjoy to ride. Snobs aren't even worth addressing. As far a group rides go...I would've done the same. I would've watched them run away, shook my head, and hope not to catch up with them on the side of the road with someone down in a heap of twisted metal. |
