Why does the tach needle flash?

The manual says because the motor is approaching redline, but if you just give it a little gas at idle it will flash sometimes...

I've seen the needle flash several times at RPMs around 6k.

Is the bike fully warmed up (over 150 degrees) before giving it gas?

The redline is lowered when the bike is still
warming up.
I am not sure about this one but,
it may also lower the redline during break in.

I have also seen that one time and my bike was fully warmed up. Maybe it is supposed to do that at idle as a msg?

I've seen it before fully warmed up.... but I've also seen it when the bike was fully warm.

My 1125r has almost 5k on it now... it will have close to the service mileage on it after this weekend : )

I've read somewhere that the programming in the ECM turns the shift light on well below the rev limit when there is no load on the engine, about 6500 RPMs, to let the operator know the engine doesn't like being reved without any load.

I think you got it sheridan
Paid attention to mine last night, lights up at about 5500 with no load.
Never saw it while riding, but never went over 6K either.
