Has anyone got any suggestions on a radar detector for the "25r". Now that I have a Buell that is capable of high speed touring on those lonely back roads. I wanted to see what ya'll have been using. The H-D detector? or another motorcycle specific brand ,something with an earplug. ways to hook it up? I had a Liberty that was motorcycle specific about 15 yrs ago But I can't find any one that will work on it plus it's so old it would only work for X and K bands.

I use the Escort 8500 along with the ZR3 laser shifter, and a techmount to hold the Escort.

It's helpful for finding speed traps that are actively being worked, but if an officer uses instant on or laser and gets a lock on you, it's over before you can react, realistically. Having it on the bike probably ensures getting a ticket.

After running radar detectors for 30 years, a good one is only as good as your "bear-bait" now more so than ever. I run the new 8500 and it keeps me safe if I use my head. It will be mounted on the 1125. It has an earphone jack but, it is not stereo so you will need an adapter to have it make noise in both ears.

For notification, I use the HARD system. It's wireless and installs in your helmet.

I've been disapointed with mine. (Escort 8500)

It does pick up radar and laser just fine when there's plenty of cars in front of me, so I guess it works fine... But when I'm speeding, it's generally because I'm on an open/empty road; there's no cars infront of me to get radared, and the detector doesn't go off till it's too late.

just a little piece from personal experience.....radar detectors dont do anything other than tell you when you are going to get a ticket...save your money and keep your eyes open if you want to avoid getting for having too much fun off the track.

There is a gps based radar detector and knows were the cops are which is good, I think a cb radio would be good the truckers always know were they are, I try to just ride with the flow of traffic, can not afford any more surcharges, and will do the fast riding at the track.

Hwyranger pretty much said it ... and just so everyone realizes ... many agencies are using Laser to clock those that like to test the performance of their toys. "Laser Detectors" do detect laser, but if it goes off, you've already been clocked and most likely at a distance of 1,000 to 2,000 feet. Oh, and some laser's even detect Jammers and still get the correct speed.

Bear-bait is a requirement. Mike F, You stated it correctly, without bear-bait no detector will save you with the current state of the radar systems. Most LEO's don't leave their Radar on unless they are just trying to slow down people with detectors.

Dan:
I'm surprised at you! Being just 10 years younger than me that you are not familiar with that term. From the best I can remember it came out of the 70's CB explosion. "Bear-bait" is a vehicle that is out in front of you, hopefully traveling a little over the speed limit, that entices the "Bear", Smoky-The-Bear, A.K.A. Law Enforcement Officer to turn on their radar so your radar detector can detect their presence.

Especially in this day of instant on radar, if you do not have some prior warning to the LEO with the radar, and you are speeding, you will get caught.

Even with the latest radar, most motorcycles are still pretty hard to get an accurate lock on their speed. If you are by yourself, you are caught, if there is a cage around that is speeding close to you, you are caught. Being forewarned that radar is in the area is your best defense if you are speeding.

BTW: "ccryder" comes from my CB days along with KXT9538 (don't know why I still remember that???)

Do not travel in the fast lane and aproching bridges use the cars as blockers and then you have to check your mirrors which is to late if you see you are tailed, so I do what the other cars are doing and if no cars five to ten over the speed limet and if I had to invest in a item so I could ride fast I think the J&m cb system is the way to go you can talk to the truckers and they let you know were smoky is.

Neil - I've always called what you refer to as bear-bait as a "bird-dog".
Saved my bacon more than once.

Another trick, I call it "sharking" is what the CHP do in Cali - haul ass in the right hand lanes, you don't stand out as much as running in the left lanes.

Thanks guys , when I'm hwy traveling I usually wait until I've got someone ,preferably with a detector, going faster to help block for me. But anything in the Hill County back roads around Austin will help. Now that I've got a proper sport touring bike to use I want to start traveling more on it ,ie.using back roads around the state. Just needed some new ideas for extra insurance while having fun. Thanks.

Growing up in VA we called them "hens"

If you have ever been turkey hunting, you know that when a group of turkey cross an open area (field) most of the time the hens come first. Then the toms come after the hens. It's a double edged sword. Some of the cops in VA are turkey hunters. They know there can be a big fat tom behind the hens.

I'm always looking for hens and hunters on the road.

Hi Hwyranger I got a question the speed limit is 55 to 65 around Massachusetts and see drivers going over 80, it seems that if I go the speed limit everyone is passing me, I am being smart by going to race school and take the fast riding to the track, but these cagers piss me off and I have had so many close calls from stupid people what do you suggest I do to keep out of trouble? sometimes on a long trip it is hard to keep the speed down and I try just to do like 5 over the speed limit. Mike, back when I lived in Cali, we had a CHP come on the ship as we made it back to Dago from Pearl.
He told us Cali had a law called "prevailing speed" or something.
Basically, you're good to go, flowing with the traffic.
He said, "If the speed limit is 65, traffic is going 80 and you're going the speed limit, we'll write YOU a ticket for going too slow."
Don't know if it's still that way, or how Massachusetts is.
I'd check with your local LEOs, every place deals with traffic differently.
Last I knew it was legal in Mass to use the shoulders during rush time as an overflow lane, nowhere else tho.

Hey Zack some places yes but it has to be posted, I had a cop flip out on me for riding in the brake down lane and gave me two tickets, I beat one but not the other. I got t boned the other nite on the ulysses riding along the curb and hit me right in the front of the rear saddlebag hard I think he was going into a parking lot and did not look could have been a bicycle and that would have been bad and if he hit me up front it would have been bad but the plastic acted like a shock absorber and I almost lost it, felt good that I controlled it and was a rush, I did not stop seen some plastic falling and got home and had his paint on my saddlebag and a small scrape, I would say bike won car lost. I do go with the flow of traffic it just seems weird and they hit you with surcharges here on each vehicle so if I have three bikes I got to pay it on all three and that is allot to pay, I hate Massachusetts. In Cali there's a misconception that "flow of traffic" or "prevailing speed" will cover you. On the freeways, the maximum speed is 65, or 70 if you're in the boondocks. Max speed limit is just that, everyone else can be going 90, and if you're doing 70 in that 65 zone, you're in violation of the same VC section as the others, just not as big of a fine. In socal, we are all a bunch of leadfoots. So if you want to try going the speed limit you WILL be passed by just about every other vehicle on the road. But big rigs and vehicles pulling trailers are required to be at 55 and in the two right lanes. They tend to push it to 60-65 though. So you CAN get by going the speed limit without fear of getting run over if you stay in the right lanes. If you want to gamble, go in the left lanes where you pretty much have to speed in order not to have some cager run over you.

As for that CHP who said he will write you if you are not keeping up with traffic....not happening. I can't even stop someone to tell them they are crazy for driving in the left lanes ("fast lanes") if they are doing the speed limit. Now if you decide to go 50 in the left lanes when road, weather, and traffic conditions are not such that you should slow down, I can get you for impeding. But that is very rarely the case here.

Surface streets, where the speed limit is not a MAXIMUM speed but a PRIMA FACIA speed limit, flow of traffic does have a part. However, posted speed limits are determined by surveys of the prevailing speed on a determined road, then you can get away with up to maybe 5 or 10 over on certain roads.

Thanks for the info Hwyranger, what I said is true, but it was 25 years ago.
We always had a CHP officer ride the ship from Pearl Harbor to San Diego and tell us what the driving conditions were like after being gone 6 months.
They would go over new laws and how things had degraded again on the highways.

Another question, how does Cali use radar? When I left in '84, y'all could use radar only on US highways, not local and state hwys. Has that changed?

I appreciate input from the LEO point of view.
Much friendlier here than the side of the road.

Radar and lidar are both used on all freeways or roads with a maximum speed limit. on surface streets, radar and lidar are only allowed to be used where an engineering and traffic survey have been completed justifying the posted speed limit. Most surface streets will have the signs posted "radar enforced" under the speed limit signs if the survey has been conducted, but not all.

Huh, I always called those guys "rabbits" like from a dog track. One car with a crapload of others chasing him.

Anyway - I don't have an 1125, but a Uly. What do you guys use to keep your detectors dry, (assuming you ride in the rain - you do ride in the rain, right?)

Back in 93 I had a gsxr-750 with a radar detector. The thing never did work right. Sometimes it would go off when I rev'd the bike. Anyway, back then I would just run, if I was on the interstate. I can't see running on the CR, not enough wind protection.

Why don't they show the bikes that get away on COPS? Because they don't want you to know, that's why.

Anyone with a radar detector on a CR? I suppose you could mount it behind the windscreen.}
