One last thing. All test I have seen of the 1098 is actually the 1098S. The 2007 example cost $22,795. That is almost the cost of two 1125R. For that extra $10,800 you get 9rwhp and 10# less. I wonder if you put $10,800 worth of modifications to an 1125R, could you equal or best those advantages?

Classic.

In the UK the price difference is much closer. Lucky for Buell the dollar's so weak.

Not from what I see, MCN has the 1098 30% more than the 1125 while in the USA it is only 25% more. It should be a hell of much nicer bike for that.

And for you American types that means that the 1098 (BASE MODEL) is $4018.52 MORE expensive then the 1125R. Just put that into perspective. I could buy a lot of power commander and slip-ons and stuff for that kind of dough.

"But could you buy $4018.52 of build quality into an 1125? "

Doubtful. The build quality is reportedly top notch. If you could do so for the 1125R, you could do likewise for most any commercially produced motorcycle, including the 1098.

One will most certainly be able to purchase suspension upgrade/tuning, mufflers, engine remapping/tuning services, lighter weight carbon fiber replacements for various body panels/pieces, adjustable race-type billet triple clamps, billet pegs, controls, levers and such.

Must be wet weight, full of fuel. Distinct advantage to the Buell, but still sounds heavy to me. Maybe Blake was right about the advantages of air cooling. That radiator and coolant weighs a ton!

Dave Gess,

Thank you for taking time to correct and educate the ignorant.

Whoa! I wonder if Ducati UK know that there is a built-in subliminal advertisement for the Buell 1125R hidden within the price being advertised for their 1098. Cool! LOL

I haven't read all the replies, just the first bunch and skimmed some of the rest. But for this quote I'll simply say that Sean/Rocket, your opinion is welcome and you're free to feel safe in this thread as far as I'm concerned.

As for all the rest, carry on, seems to be a very wide ranging discussion. Thank you all for your opinions, appreciate it.

I'm afraid there is no give in my mind Mike. Blake has put a gun to my head and forced me to sign a disclaimer asked that I agree to avoid personal insult and respect that BadWeB is for Buell enthusiasts yet again, so I'm on best behaviour, until the next time.

Fixed it for you.

Ah well. The New Year is fast upon us. Let's hope for tolerance and freedom and abounding understanding. If not that, then let's hope for a new bike key in everyone's stocking and a bike to fit it to in the garage.

Yes, studied one at the NEC.

On a completely unrelated issue I'm struggling to find a new sportsbike with rubber foot pegs

1125 8495 Pounds

The difference is that the Buell is 2755 pounds cheaper.

By the current conversion rate that would put the Buell at $5556.28 cheaper than the Duc.

Where exactly is the closer price difference Rocket?

This whole discussion gets me thinking about de facto standards.

For years on end Volvo was the car to get for safety.

That myth lived on years past the point when other automakers had caught up and surpassed Volvo.

Might just be the same phenomenon here. GIXER is the de facto performance standard - or was - and might not be any more.

At any rate.
A GIXER is a powerful weapon in an expert's hand as proven in many competitive environments. An 1125R might be a powerful weapon usable by the more common hand.

Look at the Superstock privateer entries for any 2007 AMA race. Nearly every privateer is on a GSXR1000. To me this is the best measure for how good a current bike is.

Where exactly is the closer price difference Rocket?

Both myself and another frequent British BadWeB contributor have said in several posts how the UK market where sportsbikes are concerned, places the 1125r as not such a bargain it might be seen as in the US.

Likewise, buying a Ducati in the US is more expensive than it would be in the UK. Thus, the 1125r and 1098 are placed much closer in price here.

Now I know you're going to pick the bones out of this statement, so do me a favour and think of it like this. If I converted English money here in the UK to US dollars and ventured over to America I could buy an 1125r for half of what it would cost here in the UK.

I'm bored of this one now. Can we move on please.

Apparenlty in Sean's (Rocketman's) mind half of $17,000 is the same as $12,000.

I can see why he's getting bored here. I too don't much care for making a fool of myself in public.

I should have done the math just in case; half of $17,000 is $8,500, which is not anywhere near the same as $12,000.

"A 1098 is $16000 in the US which translates to roughly to £7933. I am not sure but I think that is lower than the UK price of £11250. Please correct me if I am wrong."

That be roughly equivalent. The current ratio is two dollars to the pound.

Let's put this into perspective. The 1098S is a limited availability motorcycle that is built with no regard for cost, hence the high retail price. If you compare the 1125R price to it's other 'mass produced' competitors you'll see just how closely priced they all are. These prices are all taken from one multi-franchise dealer in the UK and are indicative of current prices throughout the UK. Discounts on these prices for most models are available with a bit of shopping around and haggling (except for the 1125R, which is yet to reach our shores and for which no discounts will be available, yet).

Buell 1125R: £8495
Yamaha R1: £8999
Yamaha R6: £7499
GSXR1000: £8949
GSXR750: £7949
CBR1000R: £8999
ZX10-R: £8800 (reduced to £7299!)
Honda SP-2: £9499 (final edition)
Ducati 848: £9000
Ducati 1098: £11250
KTM Superduke (Special edition) £7299 (with Akrapovic exhausts, R tail unit and carbon parts).

All of these bikes are aimed at the same buyers looking for sportsbike performance, and the price differential is hardly enough to sway a buyer from one make to another. Those that want a 1098 will buy one regardless of cost or will settle for a 848 rather than any other bike in the list. Buyers impressed by BHP figures and brought up on a diet of IL4's for years will buy one of the Jap 1000's. People looking for 'something diferent' may be more likely to consider the Buell but will also look at the MV, Benelli, Guzzi and other smaller manufacturers too.

The Buell is fighting to break into a VERY competitive market sector with the 1125R, and as much as we would like to see it succeed it will be a long haul to get it into the best sellers list or to get buyers to consider it as a viable alternative to the current state of the art IL4's..

If I were about to uproot and move to America, God forbid you all, and I wanted to own an 1125r once I settle in, then it would be cheaper to buy it in America for me using pounds I saved in England.

I could simply take £8495 to the local Thomas Cook travel agent and exchange it for $17124, then I would be $5000 better of when I make my 1125r purchase in the US.

But better still, I'd only need to arrive in the US with £6000 in US currency to buy an 1125r. Is that so very hard for you to understand?

If I worked at Buell, I'd be more concerned with supply than demand. When you've got dealers out there who have already sold all or most of the bikes they'll be getting this year, the problem isn't getting more people interested in them, it's getting them out to the people who want them.

Buell will not be competing with the GSX-R1000 in terms of sales any time soon, because they couldn't make enough to meet the demand even if it was there.

I think it defies logic to say a small manufacturer of V-Twins should be compared to huge manufacturers of inline 4's rather than a medium manufacturer of V-Twins.

If the 1125R even comes close to competing with the 1098 on performance, the buyers who prefer to pay more for an 848 are clearly buying it for nothing other than the brand name . . . something that will certainly happen. . . but not something that should be held against Buell (or something the Ducati purchaser should be proud of).

From reading this board, it seems nobody in the UK will be wanting the 1125R. I don't think that's a problem. That will just be a few more bikes that can be sold elsewhere to people who are begging for them.
