DucX1 is in full troll mode right now. He is angry that Buell has a great motorcycle that matches up on specs with a Ducati, and can only attack it now with fear tactics. It's really sad to see people stooping to this level.

I just like to be a counterpoint to those that flat out refuse to acknowledge that BMC is manufacturing defective products right now without providing the consumer with a solution.They're even already obsoleting drive belts and haven't even started mass production! I guess just like i'll never convince some to remove those rose colored glasses,i'll never be convinced to allow BMC a blank check to manufacture defective product.

I'm frankly baffled by why you think this is a problem.

Let's imagine Honda is running some testing on a pre-production model and they find that the clutch-pull is stiffer than ideal. Would the best response to that situation be:

1. Do nothing. Improving clutch pull feel will require extra time and money.

2. Put the time and effort into correcting the problem before the bike goes to production so that the customer has the best possible bike.

In what world (other than the nether-world of the heartles bean counter) is number 1 the best route to go? It happens, sure, probably more often than not, but the ideal way to go is #2, the wrong but easy way to go is #1.

As posted in another thread, Buell is not obsoleting a "defective" belt.

They have simply found a better way to make them.

I have heard reports of *one* belt failure so far on the 1125. I may be misinformed or under-informed, but that hardly sounds like "defective" to me.

I rode the snot out of the bike along with 150 others in Pocono and didn't notice any abnormal wear on the belts or on any other part of the bikes we were riding. These were bikes with (at that time) 2000+ track-only miles on them. PREPRODUCTION bikes at that.

Not once has BMC said they found a problem with the belts and that is why they are replacing them. They have simply been working with Goodyear to build a "better mousetrap".

I still don't understand - since when does "improvement" equal "defect"?. Get over it.

Guys,Guys...I'm all for,and expect continuous improvement.My point of reference is the 2003 XB model year which saw belt failures at a high rate.Now we have another benchmark Buell model being produced.There's where my suspicions lie.With the belts already obsoleting,my question is...Are they robust enough YET? And how will BMC support failures of first year models IF,IF,they materialise? Same as 2003 when they said "Oh,you need a 2004...2005...2006 model we've improved.THAT seems like poor support to me.

DucX1 - I had a 2003 XB9R. I broke two belts.Emphasis on the "I".
After talking to Buell Customer Service I realized I WASN'T FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS.
Even those early belts work VERY WELL if you treat them as they were designed to be treated.
After my epiphany, the last belt, on it now, has almost 20k miles with no belt guards and no failures.

Give the "obsoleting belts" crap a break.

I had an ESP on my '03 xb9s-first belt broke at 10k, second at almost 20k, I was told it wasn't a warranty item. Didn't care to argue, SO,,,, I just bought a new belt. Easy. Didn't blame Buell for my riding habits. Oh, all guards in place too. I figured it is a small price to pay for that much fun. What is that, about 6 1/2 cents/mile? Much less than the gas for Wifey's new pickup!

Cobralightning,my experience has been different than yours,be it asking people or on other motorcycle forums,they think the new Buell seems great,except the looks.

il tell ya'll what...the buell is a waaay better bad weather bike than the honda...fitting i guess eh...the buell inspired a lot more confidence riding in these arctic freakin conditions and handled damn nice in the rain...the honda..not so much....my 9 was truly a bad weather bike.

1997 S3 with original belt.
This bike has been ridden in every state west of the Mississippi and four states east of the Mississippi.
In addition it has been ridden on at least 12 race tracks.
It has even been ridden by the guy who's name is on the tank.

I'd like to see real numbers myself. I think the original belts we much more susceptible to miss handling. I have an 03 with over 20K on the original belt and it still looks like new. I suspect a larger percentage of those that experienced failures were related to miss handling the belt either prior to or during installation or re-installation. For example tire changes.

Would be very interesting to see any data Buell has on the cause of failures.
