Regarding the felt vibration in the bars, I have ridden two rotax engined Aprilas (Falco & RSV) and the the vibration level was nil.

In fact, both Aprilias were so smooth compared to my SV1000, that I was quite impressed at the time.

I realize that the new Buell engine is 72 degrees (versus 60 on the Aprilias), but with three engine balance shafts, I expect the production model 1125R will be smooth.

"Bad fork springs?" They feel they may have a bunch of bad fork springs??

If this is representative of Buell quality control (bikes prepared for motorcycle journalists to test ride), what is the average buyer to expect?

Sorry, I want to believe in the product, but this makes me skeptical.

How many of us are ready to buy a $12,000 sportbike and then start shelling out money for suspension modifications?

They're reviewing "pre" production bikes. I treat all pre production reviews as a sort of "what's to come" write up.

The actual bike won't even begin production until mid Oct.

I think that leaves lots of time to dial things in : )

Good news.

It's not. I know it, the journalists know it, the folks who ISO9000 certified Buell (only moto mgf) knew it and most the world knows it.

Damn good thing you are tuned into badweb.

It will take some time for the critics to get over their long standing dissing of Buell.

Even the Superbike article author, who without a doubt is (was?) a Buell hater and certainly a Jap bike lover, has some good things to say about the Buell. Can his assessment of the 1125r having equal power of a good I4 600 be correct? MAYBE the smooth power delivery of the 1125r made it SEEM like it was slower than it really is. We have heard that quite a bit from several sources (albeit Buell related sources). This WILL be interesting!

Dave....

Just for you:

Keep this as Item #1 when you read any of the upcoming re the 1125R;

The motorcycles in use at Laguna and its environs were pre-production units. All of the week's worth of journalists were told this repeatedly. This critical bit of info is missing from the MCN report. It's very important to weave this fact into the context of the riding impressions. To a large degree, it's analogous to a show opening off-broadway: This is the time when the tweeking takes place. An adjustment here, a change there can make the difference between closing in a week, and a Tony.

Modern sportbike are incredibly complex machines that, by design, respond well to adjustment. From my perspective, when motorcycle companies bring journalists together from all about the world,it is as much for the company's benefit as it is the publication's. That is, they receive a tremendous amount of expert feedback which then can be applied to production units.

Over the coming days/weeks/months there will probably be 75 or more articles written or posted re the Laguna experience. If you're smart about it, you'll read them all to get the best overall impression of just what this new Buell is all about. For those of you anxiously waiting for your own personal 1125R, keep your wit's about you, read the reports carefully (In particular, draw a firm distinction between the pre-ridden blather and an actual riding experience) and rest assured this is a very good motorcycle.

Unfortunately Reg, getting experienced journalists to do your shakedown in public is also a very sharp double edged sword.

The invited journo's will write what they think about the bike, and will hardly mention (or even not mention at all) that these are pre-production bikes.

The uninitiated prospective buyer (i.e. the poor souls who don't do Badweb) will believe what they read from their favourite mags, and if more than one publication dares to criticise the forks/brakes/turn signals then that is what will be remembered by the reading public. It will then be an uphill struggle for the factory and for dealers to convince buyers that the bikes were not the finished article and that they should ignore the road tests.

This has been the case at more than one launch (not just Buells either), and it has taken a lot to change perceptions once they are in place.

Thankfully the majority of reports that I have read so far are extremely positive, with just a few minor niggles being brought up, so hopefully that trens will continue : )

Trojan...
Your point is the reason I posted what I did.
Buell is well aware of the dangers inherent in these press launches. However, despite this they are confident that they've introduced a motorcycle to the press that will impress. No company can control the quality of the writings that result (Nor would we want them to!). Over the week long intro I saw and spoke with excellent, well-respected writers.... and some of the other ilk.

I'm not quite as sanguine as you re some of the posters hereabouts.Firm conclusions have been drawn based upon nothing of real substance. In some ways it's a credit to Buell marketing, and in others a reflection of consumer ignorance.

I have been on hand for the S1, X1, Blast, XB, Ulysses and now the 1125R launches. I have noted the pre-launch silliness, experienced the launches themselves, and wondered over the post-launch articles. Reality is often lost in these processes.

I am not a "fan" of Buell. That word implies a mindlessness that runs contrary to common sense. I do, however, have great respect for the company and, in particular, the people who have brought the 1125R to life. I have ridden it but, at this time, prefer to hold my specific opinions. It is a very good motorcycle that deserves a chance to succeed. This chance will be realized if we, as consumers, look at the bike and read the articles dispassionately, and apply the intelligence we supposedly have. The most meaningful articles will be those that reflect the use of post-Job#1 motorcycles. Unfortunately, we won't see any of those until very late this year at the earliest.

That's an accurate statement. . . . based, of course, on reports of pre-production units.

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am by this whole deal. This has taken far longer than Erik would have liked BUT something like this has been what Erik has wanted to do for 20 plus years. A great motor in great chassis.

It has been a study in doing what is possible, keeping the ball moving down the field and always keeping one's eyes on the goal.

Many have taken cheap shots at Buell for not doing this or that over the years but here we are with an American sport bike that need make no apologies to anyone. Others have come and gone, many have had big plans BUT Erik has delivered.

Even better than this bike is the knowledge that he is not finished. He has just begun.

I think the biggest surpise is that Erik got this thru Harley corporate. The fact that this motorcycle exists bodes well for Harleys future as well. That Buell did this is somewhat of a surprise, that Harley ok'd it is like a Tsunami. This bike will change far more than the part of the world we live in here.

Harley's in the business of making money. They know how to do it and they do it well. Harley knows what they need for the future. It would appear they know that Buell will help them in the goal. HD is serious about getting into the next generation of market and Buell is part of that key.

Not to me it isn't. I knew he would pull this off sooner or later or die trying. You are correct that it will change things at Harley.

I agree 100%.
I also think Jeff Bleustein should get some credit for asking Erik to help HD move into the future.

Each time I read an interview with Erik Buell, I am really proud to own a Buell motorcycle.

He is the most important 'figure' in the motorcycle manufacturing industry!!!

The fact he is talking for a 'Hossak' front end, makes clear what Erik plans to do. Evolve the motorcycle, and try, try, try new solutions, that no other manufacturer will ever have the balls to do.

I will buy the 1125R, regardless of the reviews, since I want to support Buell and I really think the 1125R will be a very important motorcycle.

Reviews??? There are so many 'good' reviews for motorcycles that I consider to be crap, so I do not really care for reviews on mags.

If you think reading an interview with Erik Buell is cool, you ought to have the good fortune to get to sit down with him for a while. The man is a class act. He obviously loves what he is doing.
