Careful Nondual, someone is going to start throwing Okra at you pretty soon and it won't be pretty!

"i just don't get passed as often as i used to by the same guys in a session."

If you can ride that SV as well as you can ride your S1 in the rain... I bet no one could pass you on a wet track.

"Get off of your high horses, he is right to have that opinion. Just as right as you are for yours."

Heh, heh... he got peppered by the Kool-Aid smilies. I was kind of enjoying it before I came to my senses.

I love the big ol' lump too. Just because the 1125R is water-cooled and makes competitive power doesn't mean I won't be able to show one my ass on the right road with the wrong rider... just like the GSX-Rs, R1's, CBR's, and whatever riders I've dusted in the past.

But... the 1125R is the future and I want to be a part of the future. Not getting rid of my big ol' lump though.

Welcome Nondual!

I really LOVE my turd-its tons of fun...and have and have had several bikes in the stable to compare it with. Modern In-line fours , v-fours, triples, etc.,included. "run what ya brung" ride whatever turns you on. I think there is an expectation problem with this brand (Buell) -it is what it is-if you like it cool,if you dont like it, quit bitchin' and find something else to ride or something else to do. Stop readin so many magazines on the toilet and explore motorcycling on your own. ie: I like my Yamaha FZ-1-it really is a great bike but it doesnt light my fire like my Buell XB-12Ss.- ps-I think the SV- is a cool scoot and want to try one,,,,so this is not a put down at all...; )

I've heard a lot of folks who agree with Nondual about the old Sporty-based XBs and such. That's cool. I'm not much into top speed, never have been. I just like to go. So, while my buddies are talking the 146-hp and top speeds, I like 100 horses and every day drivability.

But I'm kinda queer like that.

NonDual has a right to his opinion. Those of us that have been around BadWeb for a while better lighten up a bit. This is the premier Buell message board, and we are going to have a huge influx of new posters. They all have a right to their opinions. It isn't right to flame the crap out of them because they didn't like the older bikes.

I don't know that there's been a ton of flaming, but really, if people come to a forum of bike owners whose bikes are powered by the 'lump' with remarks like "but there's always been that proverbial 'dog turd on the wedding cake'" they shouldn't be surprised to get some heat back. I think the response has been pretty muted - imagine what treatment a 'lump' rider would get going to a CBRR/GSXR/etc forum and talking trash about their power plants.

There are lots of ways to say you prefer liquid cooling, or over-head cams, or balanced engines or higher revs or whatever pushes your buttons or that you just don't like the idea of a four-cam air-cooled un-balanced V-twin powering a bike you'd buy without referring to our 'lump' as dog turd.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but the way it's expressed can have an impact on the the reaction it gets

So, Buell pulls in new people with this new bike and everyone jumps on him for liking it and not being a fan of the "old" Buells. If that is not a holier then thou shit stance.

People bitch when people don't jump on the Buell wagon, then they bitch when they do.

Nondual,

I've been on motorcycles since I was 5. I've had CBRs, GIXXERS, and an R6. I finally realized that I wanted a more adult, mean naked twin. There was nothing meaner than the XB12S. I will tell you this, it is THE funnest motorcycle I've ever owned!

As for the old fashioned engine? Corvettes still use pushrod engines. Oh yeah, so does the Viper!

"Dodge is unveiling a new 600-horsepower engine in its Viper, providing more evidence that the venerable pushrod engine is still alive and breathing."

From NYTimes.com

Ducati monsters, save the S4, use air-coolers. The new Monsters, to be unveiled soon, will be air-cooled. The water-cooled Monsters will most likely be dropped according to insiders.

To everyone else, get used to seeing typical sportbikers showing up on this website and sharing their unpopular opinions. Heck, we may even encounter some 1125R riders who will think they are too good to be seen with us, even though we ride the same brand. There might even be some that will hang out with their squid buddies, but won't partake in a Buell ride. It's a sign of the times, but at least an American sportbike company will be selling bikes and taking some customers away from the typical brands.

I say welcome Nondual, just keep an open mind about the other bikes offered at Buell. Now that you are interested, take a look at the benefits of our "other" bikes.

I went from this:

To this:

And I couldn't be happier. There is something about the soul of the Buell that is intoxicating. The way it coughs out fury and turmoil, the way it shakes at idle like it's ready to pounce, and the way the bike pulls at my arms to hold on while the front wheel struggles to stay on the pavement when you whack the throttle open.

There is more to a motorcycle than all-out performance. Sound, performance, looks, etc. The Buells (especially XBs) are works of mechanical art and I don't care if they don't do 160+.

Yeah, but this is the 1125 board. There is still an XBoard too, for air cooled enthousiasts. I'd expect 1125 board comments to lean towards liquid cooled engines for the most part from here on out.

The 1125 was, at least in part, intended to draw in those that consider the lump a dog turd. Otherwise there would have been no point in designing the bike as the new flagship model.

I never called the engine a dog turd straight up.

What I was saying was that for ME, it was the dog turd on the wedding cake. I guess I shoulda clarified that. It's just an expression.

But a curious thing is happening. Hearing about how much you love the dinosaur-powered XBs is making me rethink them. That XB12R is so damned beautiful! It's actually much more aesthetically pleasing than the 1125R. And if the maintenance is infrequent, the gas mileage appeals too, since even my SV only gets a pretty disappointing 35-40mpg, it might be worth at least test-driving.

Do they let you borrow helmets at the dealers? My bike and helmet are in Wisconsin (I'm a travel RN on assignment and haven't been able to truck it around with me...).

Nondual,

Most HD/Buell dealers I've seen have loaner helmets.

Don't be surprised when it tries to shake your fillings out at idle; you'll get used to it. Don't be surprised when it hits the rev limiter at ~6800 RPM; you don't need to wind it that high anyway.

Just be prepared for a big grin when it hits ~3500 RPM, all the vibration disappears and that TORQUE places a big invisible hand under your butt and shoves you forward!

There are sporbike motors out there that are better than the XB, but the SV650 isn't one of them. An XB9 will walk away from an SV650, and will do so with less maintenance.

This person has obviously never been to a CCS/ASRA race. The SV holds its own with 1200cc Buells. Just keeping it real here.

But that isn't even what this thread was about...it is about the new 1125R bringing in a completely different clientele into the Buell fold. I say, more power to 'em (135 RWHP, that is)!

I've never personally ever actually seen a dog turd on a wedding cake.

Nondual, be carefull, if their comments are getting you to start to look at the XB line you might want to avoid the old 'tuber section of the site here, or not.
Most demoing dealers will or should have a loaner helmet available, but try to bring along a pair of gloves.

The one thing that always make me laugh is that the air cooled motor is "old", "out-dated", a "lump"

When Water cooled over head cam'd motors have been out just as long.

In the interest of full disclosure, the one archaic and less then perfect part of the air cooled Buells is the transmission. I've got an 05, which is better then everything that came before it, but not as good as the 06's, and there is still a LOT of room for improvement.

It's by and large "good enough" though, and the good in the rest of the bike more then makes up for it...

Both engine families will be great and will have their place. One transmission family will be great, one will be tolerable. IHMO.

(There, now they can pile on me for a while... ;) )

For starters, any bike is worth test driving in my opinion.

I have to agree that the Firebolt is a thing of pure beauty. There are good looking bikes out there, but the Firebolt takes the cake from anything I've seen.

Maintenance? What maintenance? Now that TPS resets are all done with, I don't know what scheduled maintenance an XB would have that any other bike woudln't. I can think of plenty that an XB doesn't have that nearly all other sport bike do, though.

And gas mileage? My XB12R regularly gets high 40's when I'm beating the piss out of it. Mid 60's when I take a long trip. 66mpg was the best I ever did on it.

See my above two posts!

Corvettes and Vipers have been using "archaic" pushrod lumps for years. I don't hear anyone complaining about those vehicles.

I've heard tons of negative feedback about the XB's tranny, but I think its way better than the box of rocks my R6 had! The new ones are even better!

Y'know what's funny? The Firebolts were bashed unmercifully for their styling when they were introduced. Now they are beautiful. I am positive that's where most people will be with the 1125R 6 years from now.

People always resist change. If you don't believe it go somewhere that there is un-assigned seating and after a few
days of watching everyone take the same seats (like the sheep they are) sit in someone else's place.

They will be confused and even angered that you would take "their place". Their is even a better than even chance that
they will confront you over it.

Most people get comfortable with things a certain way and will actively resist change...even when it is an improvement
on the original simply because it makes them uncomfortable.

As Buell riders a lot of us tend to revel in things done in a different fashion.

Roll with it guys, it'll all work out.

I think if most of you disassembled an XB engine you'd be surprised how many outdated parts still exist. For example the rollerbearing bottom end and the gigantic heavy rocker arms, the locking plate on the drive gear, or the tranny layout that does not permit a longer swingarm.

The engines work really well, but, man, some of the parts are really outdated. I don't think a new Viper or Corvette engine is a good analogy.

The new X-Wedge will update many of these 1950's holdovers, and I think Harley should do the same.

Now, I do enjoy the XB engines very much, and I agree that they are integral to what could be considered the perfect machine by many. I want an 1125, but I'm still very satisfied riding my XB. XB's do work really well. In fact, I think that the antiquated design of the engine adds to the charm.

I just think that few of you who believe it is an up to date design have ever taken one apart, and also taken apart a newly designed competitor's engine.

Anonymous,

I think you are right. I have to admit I was first in line to rip on the bike and its looks but now as I learn more about it, I am starting to really appreciate its looks and all the performance bits and pieces and it only took about 10 days not 6 years.

I always liked the styling of the 'bolt. When the S came out, I was smitten! I think the S is one of the meanest and simplistic bikes on the road. It will still look good years from now.

I agree.

I was fed up with my X1 and done with Buell.

Then I saw the XB line. Up close I was amazed at the design and build quality. The whole package came together so well.

From a few feet I loved the lightning at first sight. Kudos to the designer.
