Buell Orion?
He hunts for eternity the Buell Ursus in the night sky.

I would like a Buell Ursus.

ETA: Upon reflection, if it was going to be a mythical animal then I would be really tempted by a 2008 Buell Kraken.

Yes, it is a giant squid or octopus. I don't care. So there.

I overheard a guy at a Hooters, near the BMC factory, that said it would be the Uranus.
No really, it is on the internet so it must be true.
(I hope that guy at Hooters doesn't lose his job like the HD guys do when spreading secret info)

So we have gotten past the what the hell are they going to build (because nobody is saying or showing anything) onto what are they going to call it! Reminds me of the Ginger craze a couple of years ago when the Segeway scooter came out. Or maybe that big "It" from the ebay commercials, esp the shot of the raw meat in the letters "It" :P And now for something completely different... its, ... its...
its... insert your favorite random Monty Python reference here

Buell Orion?

Now, THERE's an idea, especially if it used Orion's intended propulsion system:

Hey, do Badwebbers get a prize when the thread they start exceeds 500 posts. Or is the magic number 1203?

I have heard nothing else new other than a reiteration by someone else who was present when the test rider was speaking. He said it was going to be called the Buell Drago, I'm totally Sirius.

As someone who works on the P-3 Orion I would love to own a Buell Orion!

Or even a Poseidon (as in P-8 Poseidon, the replacement to the P-3)!

XB#RX?

From what I remember, there were three versions of the P-40. The Tomahawk, the Warhawk, and the Kittyhawk. Not sure about the last one. A couple more:

Wildcat
Airacobra

Some of those mythological names would be really cool, plus the added benefit would be that the average squid couldn't pronounce them, or understand what the hell they mean. This would promise to provide hours of enjoyment hanging out at the local hot-spot on Friday night.

Went by the dealer today for some shifter parts and the sales guy gave me his opinion on the 2008 Buells.

He said it will be an 1100cc engine built on the current platform, which will rev to about 8k. It is to replace the 9.

Makes more sense than any of the other theories I've heard so far.

I doubt that Buell would try to market an 1100cc and a 1200cc motorcycle that is built on the same platform especially if it is going to go head to head with a 1098.

I believe it is going to be an entirely new bike although I don't think they would need to do much to the chassis only the motor. I also don't think that the XBRR
motor will be used as 13:1 compression
wouldn't go over too well on pump gas.

So I think it will be an all new motor
quite possibly a triple .

I find it curious that the little birds have gone silent.

Check out this company's engineering capability:
http://www.synerject.com

Synerject provides components and knowledge for clean two-strokes. They use Orbital's know how and the company is based in Virginia.

Yes, I am going to beat the two-stroke drum a bit more.

I recognize that this is not an inexpensive proposition.

There is a large market in the US for dirt bikes, and it meets the perceived need of Harley Davidson to begin a "demographic shift." We have beaten that horse into submission.

If I was on Harley's board, I would want the most for my $2.37 I let Buell pry out of my bony fingers. I would want a piece of a very lucrative (theoretically, at least) world market for smaller capacity roadbikes.

I had a Ray Charles moment looking at the "artist" rendition of the Buell Dirtbike. It could be a two stroke. It could be powered by fusion, as well.

Yes, I am grasping here but be patient. Harley Davidson is one of the most recognized brand names in the world. Buell, well, uh...less so. Why not let Buell take on the "performance" world while Harley Davidson sells similar platform smaller CC clean two strokes to the world market?

Harley selling small bikes wouldn't dilute their brand image in the US, as they wouldn't be selling them here.

The frame of a dirt bike could make a very nice frame for a small street bike. Harley has a dealership in China now, but I don't know about manufacturing capacity there.

Buell has to sell an idea to Harley Davidson. A new engine is a major chunk of change. If Buell can sort out the technical hurdles of clean two-strokes (in the larger and medium CC capacities) then Harley stands to win in the smaller CC market on the worldwide stage.

How do you say "do-rag" in Mandarin?

[insert sounds of crickets chirping]

Or a little bird will show up and force me to eat crow in July.

This is all a lot like Orson Welles in Citizen Kane whispering...Rosebud.

Except he whispers...Excalibur. And it isn't a sled, but a motorcycle.

Yep, just like Citizen Kane.

Rocket,
At the dealer meeting it was stated that
Buell would be entering the hypersport
market ( supposedly)and the only bike
that is being aimed at is the 1098.
I know it sounds crazy ,but I fully believe that Buell can do it ,if the
mothership says okey-dokey.It is very obvious that there is a market for it as
the 1098 is just about sold out everywhere.

yall are thinking too big.

the blast has gone the longest without a update.

we might see a new single(maybe dirt bike in 2 years) before we see a new twin, just like we saw the blast b4 the XB9R. Blast engine is just a single carbed version of the XB9.

does anybody have the sales/production # for the XB9R. maybe they getting rid of it b/c it does not sell as good as XB9SX and XB12R. The margins in 12R have to be better than the 9R.

I don't think it's a matter of whether Buell can produce a nightmare for 1098 owners, as much as, will HD support such an effort.

Buell's engineers could produce a world beater if the money and resources of HD were behind it. Who knows...maybe HD has foreseen the fevered 1098 sales and decided to take the plunge.

From what I understand the V Rod is being discontinued(?)...coincedence? Now we have all the stuff to build a liquid cooled twin and no bike to put in...what ever shall we do?

if it is to be believed that money can buy anything then i suppose harley is in a better position to build somthing like a 1098 than ducati is...

... which leads me to believe there is alot more to it that money

If Buell could build a bike to compete with a 1098, it would have to do so in sales first. To get the sales figures that would really count, such a bike would have to race, and win. Ain't gonna happen in my opinion.

A small scale approach might be possible, but I don't see Buell going there.

Unfortunately I can't give you my opinions as to why, though I'm sure many would like to hear them, but I would be contravening BadWeB policy apparently.

Absolutely. The Ducati engine is killing Honda and Yamaha right now in MotoGP, and they don't have nearly the money that the big factories have.

What they have is good engineers and a culture focused on performance that supports their efforts.

At the dealer meeting it was stated that
Buell would be entering the hypersport

Wikipedia: Hyper sport bikes are very large displacement sport bikes with a strong emphasis on top speed and acceleration. They typically are powered by motors displacing 1100 cc to 1400 cc. Hyper sport bikes are bigger and heavier than super bikes with wet weights generally being close to 500 lb. The increased weight compromises race track capabilities in favor of stability at very high speeds that can reach 180 mph. This compromise also allows manufacturers to design slightly more comfortable rider ergonomics.

Large (fat/heavy) riders are known as Busa riders. Big bike for a big butt. Now - take a look at your typical Harley rider. I've heard from many a Harley rider that a Buell is just too small for them, even the SS which came about because of complaints from taller riders. Based on the above definition and IF the V-Rod is discontinued I'd say Buell gets the V-Rod motor back and builds a sport bike around it. Big/heavy and fast with a competent motor already sitting on the shelf.
