Just finished reading "PoweRRing the future" in Fuell mag and after reading that one would only assume there will be a short stroke large bore XB (air/oil cooled) engine coming soon. To me it reads like the XBRR DNA will be the future of Buell bikes. | ||

Buss,that's ok cuz I have heard the tidbits from several trusted sources. And I for one,am hoping for a new motor. And I seem to remember when we were told there was no connection between Buell and the VRod motor. Course I guess I could just redo my S-2 for the umpteenth time. I think the statement made was that Buell would not be using the V-Rod motor on account of it was/is too big and too heavy. Headlights on the turbo-nitro 100" beast? Heck yeah, you don't want it gathering dust in the off-season do you? Actually, you really ought to give road racing a try. Enter that beast in whatever class it fits and frighten all competition out of your way. | ||

I stopped at the local chop shop this morning and got in a discussion about the new S&S Wedge engine. It got me to thinking, all the resources (money) that HD has, and S&S is putting more engineering into the product to keep the V-Twin characteristics while eliminating the major shortcomings with the HD engines. That led me to think about how frustrating it must be to be a Buell employee with a thousand great ideas, and to have to get approval from HD. Harley makes money hand over fist without any innovation. Why would such a successful culture have any desire to chase performance and innovation? It would not even makes sense to expect Harley to want to take that path. They stick with what they know and what they know makes them money every year. Anyway, I'm going to enjoy the lump and the Buell chassis. I primarily want a Buell performance engine because I want to see an American company build a bike that brings a more mainstream rider in to buy US bikes. I also want to see Buell succeed on a larger scale, like Triumph and KTM. | ||

Maybe the big secret will be a more splayed cyl. arrangement such as the S&S ,after all it is going to be a "Buell specific" motor,right? I have heard S&S has had a good deal of success getting the new motor to make some impressive numbers, although they are mostly big inch motors. I understand the primary reason for splaying the cyl. was to keep the pistons pushing on the crank through more degrees of rotation? | ||

He means that HD has a strong market with baby boomers now, but that demographic is aging and will not be buying bikes in 10 - to 15 years. Like Cadillac, you have to start trying to build what the next generation wants, or you go the way of Oldsmobile. The customers just get old and die and no one replaces them. | ||

I've talked to more sportbike owners looking to get a cruiser than I have cruiser owners looking to get a sportbike, many of them nowhere close to being in the babyboomer age group. In 10-15 years from now I still plan to be buying and riding bikes. And I guess I'm included in the taildust of the boomer generation. When I was younger the baby boomers were a few years ahead of me, but now according to published reports I have somehow caught up with them and am now included in their age groups. Kind of like they widened the rope a bit, sort of. Dealerships loose more customers due to bad customer service than they do to death and old age. Think about it. | ||

I'll bag on many things about Harley being half-assed, but marketing is not one of them. There is no stronger brand recognition and loyalty that I know of. | ||

I got that information from "The Enthusiast" a few years back. H-D admitted that in 10 years of studying who was purchasing their bikes, that very group had gotten 10 years older. Perhaps that has changed? I must be one of the few bucking the trend. After 10 years and over 100,000 miles on Harleys, I purchased a Buell. Now with over 140,000 miles on two wheels, I can't imagine going back to a cruiser any time soon. (Message edited by skully on May 29, 2007) |
