VW will still be loaded after the fines. Heck, they make 4 million dollars every time they don't sell a Bugatti.

This is truly thread drift of epic proportions.

Apparently we won't find out who won the auction until Monday:

Hence the thread drift and wild comical speculation. What else is there to do?

I'd love to see where you got the 50k per year number. I suspect the vast majority is indoor air pollution.

I got a little fired up there, boys. Anyway, this could be an endless debate and we're waaaaaay off topic.

Back to the topic at hand, I really would be surprised a major concern won the auction.
My bet is it is a party who thinks the assets on hand are worth whatever they paid whether they start making new bikes or not.
Either way, nothing stopping The Man Erik from staying in the industry one way or the other, right? Is he tied to EBR in some legal way that he is required to provide services to the eventual owner?
I fell lucky I own a couple Buells and look forward to keeping them on the road for a long time.

The danger here is HERO. They are coming to the US for sure. I sincerely hope they are not involved in this sale, but I fear they are.

They are prohibited from being involved in the purchase, as is Erik.

Otherwise, anyone could allow their company to go into huge debt, have it placed in receivership, and then purchase it for a lesser price, free of any previous debts.

Hero is toast in the US. They don't understand the American market and American consumer, nor the degree to which they peed in the pool, nor the degree to which the US motorcycle community is so small and so connected.

They will keep churning out second rate bikes into markets that don't have any other choice but to buy second rate bikes.

"a well-crafted bid from another buyer was circulated, which required us to surpass his bid by more than we had available in time to close," he said Thursday on Facebook.

Belfers statement "his bid" would make it seem like the winner was an individual.

I might also add that while Erik is forbidden from bidding or ownership, there is no reason he could not have convinced a wealthy individual to purchase the company and hire him to run it. Especially if his relationship with Belfer was strained.

Erik has been quoted in at least a couple of articles that he would likely be willing to work with the new owner, whoever that turns out to be.

I recalled the 50,000 number from a previous article I read. Apparently it was a little low.
Per the CDC,
Number of deaths from other chronic lower respiratory diseases (excluding asthma, bronchitis and emphysema): 136,627.
These data are from 2013. Only heart disease and cancer killed more people.
What the causes are is probably difficult to determine unless we look at every case, which was my point exactly. Is VW solely responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans due to total disregard of EPA requirements? Of course not. Is the pollution their products are spewing into the air as I write this a contributing factor? Absolutely.
Let's not forget the polluting cars VW sold in the US represent only a small fraction of the total of they sold worldwide.

The dose makes the poison. Blaming respiratory deaths directly on increased auto emissions from a single car, or even a single brand, is like blaming drowning on people that drink water.

Ok, if cars have no effect on respiratory illnesses, why regulate emissions at all?

Also a fair point. I didn't say they auto emissions had no effect on health. I said it's silly to claim a direct relationship between VW's emissions and X number of "deaths".

STAHP. JUST STAHP.

EBR runs low emissions.... your feud is irrelevant, and not entertaining enough to bear.

EBR will resume operation April 1st. That would be boss!

I'll stop. After this.

The 50000 number you quoted for lower respiratory illness deaths are...wait for it...for lower respiratory illnesses. Like copd and bronchitis. Nox causes neither of these.

I think it's silly to say the increased emissions from Volkswagens are not contributing to increased respiratory illnesses and deaths.
It's impossible to directly link any specific incident of respiratory illness or death to Volkswagen emissions but the opposite is true as well and that is part of what makes their willful crimes so reprehensible.
Also important to mention regarding GM, soon after they realized the problem they rectified it with a revised part going forward, their misdeed was to not assign a new part number to the revised part and not to notify owners of the faulty part and offer a repair.
Unlike VW, GM did not set out to wantonly trick the public, GM did not pay their engineers to intentionally design ignition switches that would fail and cause fatal accidents.

I'll stop after this.
Yes oxides of nitrogen do cause bronchitis and emphysema.
NOx reacts with ammonia, moisture, and other compounds to form small particles. These small particles penetrate deeply into sensitive parts of the lungs and can cause or worsen respiratory disease, such as emphysema and bronchitis, and can aggravate existing heart disease, leading to increased hospital admissions and premature death.

Cravacor,

And a significant amount of the GM Diesels you see likely have had new chips/programs to uncork their performance and mileage. I knew guys that had Chevy and Ford trucks who made sure they got all the power they could. Never assume anything is the "clean" level the feds or california demand.

Want truly laughable look into the freon changes (home and auto) over the years.

Now back to the topic.... Might as well kick back for a few days until we hear who got it. Then we can nag the hell out of them. lol
