Had the pleasure to hang with the team @ Phillip Island, with the debut of the RX in Australia

Nice photos. Since you were there, what happened? What were their issues?

Top speed & HP was a big issue for the team down 40km/h on the main straight compared to the rice burners. The bikes have had no testing at all rolled out of the crate, they had never been to the track & its one of the fastest if not the fastest flowing tracks on the circuit & hard on big twins, Geoff & Aaron were freaked by the speed of it.

Mondays testing cost them 2 engines with the high comp of the RX they were pushing water & had to revise the comp ratio down to make them last & missed Tuesdays testing as a result.

If the sound of the bike is anything to go buy they should of won, the best sounding bike on the grid & everyone commented on it.

Geoff didn't make it to race 1 with a big crash into turn 12 a super fast corner leading to the main straight in Saturdays practice & broke his collar bone, he was pushing for a 1:33 which would of got him in the points on race day

Overall it would of be a valuable weekend for data & testing for the team, the only way is up & up for them.

A 1:33 is very respectable...

Thank you very much for this info. It is very important and informative. Although they do run their CR too high, I doubt if that is the cause of their problems. It is unfortunately I fear, much more severe.

What do you base your fears on Stevel?

Sorry about posting this twice.......

Reepicheep,
I hope I am wrong, but remember the bore on the 1125 was 103mm. The bore on the 1190 is 106mm. I know in the beginning of the development of the RS, the cylinder was simply bored to the new dimension and re coated with Nicosil. At that time they experienced head gasket issues they attributed to head bolt stretch and had special fasteners made which were stiffer. I heard nothing more, but I thought the cylinder wall thickness would not support the reduction from the 8mm original wall at the water jacket and 4.8mm below it. That would reduce the wall by 1.5mm respectively. I felt at the time that the reduction would make the bore unstable under heat and load. After all, the cylinder is aluminum, not iron. Keep in mind that the water jacket extends to the cylinder deck and is only anchored on about 60* of the bore circle on the chain case side. Even in the original design with the original bore size, the cylinder is unrestrained at the deck and can move about under thermal expansion and cylinder pressure loading, making it very difficult to maintain a good seal between the head deck and cylinder. It is clear to me that the cylinder casting needed to be changed to not only increase the wall thickness to accommodate the new bore dimension, but to close the deck up and leave only mating water slots in line with the water slots in the head. This simple change would be much more stable and would better accommodate the increase power level demand. Keep in mind that this fault, if true, would also make ring sealing a nightmare as well. If this is the case and I don't know that the cylinder was not modified, but this is not something you get to fix by Aragon time. Like I said, I really hope I am wrong. I do hope EBR does well.

Stevel said stuff

Steve, if you read the Cycle News interview with Erik, http://cyclenews.uberflip.com/i/262687 end of page 75 and page 76, he goes into some detail about the 1190 engine changes from the 1125, which appear to allay your thoughts.

Rocket,
Yes, I read that article and Eric did say he redesigned many components, including the combustion chamber with a new casting. However, he did not say he addressed the cylinder design. Certainly the head needed help, but in the port volume area, not so much the combustion chamber, as the main fault was the lack of adequate charge turbulence. We won't know the answer until somebody takes the Rx motor apart. I do know that my opinion was not shared in 2011, but a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then and I don't profess to know their current thinking on the subject. I am certain however that the RX is a much better motorcycle than the 1125, lessons were learned.

Well Steve, Erik did say it isn't just a bored out 1125 so I assume he did redesign the cylinder would be my take on his comments.
