None other than they will be under the 18k mark and they will all use variants of the 1190 engine and for the first time possibly chain drive on all of the models.

I think it was more like under 19 or 20k and that is all we have heard. No release date or dealer list, or any of the particulars of the models.

Aw, chains? : (

I *like* my belt drives! I don't want to have to clean a chain!

I'm with you on the chains, they are noisy, require maintenance and are far less efficient in the transfer of energy/torque to the rear wheel making for far less transfer of hp. There's a reason why they switched from chains to belts in Top fuel funny cars for there blower applications a long long time ago, belts are lighter and can withstand far more than a stretchy metal chain, it's just unfortunate they are far more expensive because there is not such a demand for there applications which is why they are not a good choice for racing. I am not sure of the exact figures because I've heard and read slightly different numbers of the loss of power transfer of a belt vs a chain... some figures argue that its somewhere between 12-18% of power loss for a belt and 22-24% for a chain. You may say it's not that big of difference but as we all no by how much we all spend on the ever ending pursuit for a little extra power out of our beloved rides that that even a little can make a difference on how big of a smile it puts on our faces.

Just my two cents, have a Buelliful ride everybody!

I thought it was much lower than that for chains/belts - are you sure you're not mixing in shaft drive somehow?

Those also look like "crank to wheel" numbers - the belt vs chain issue is only transmission output to wheel, since the transmission is likely identical in both cases.

I would believe a belt is more efficient by a chain, but I'm not aware of the difference being that great.

Chains are awesome for the track since you can change sprockets around - I definitely see the use of a chain on a race/track focused bike. But for a general street bike/touring bike, I really don't want to be bothered with a chain! I've ridden shaft drive motorcycles and belt drive motorcycles, and I don't have any real interest in the maintenance of a chain.

... that said, I'll put up with a chain on an EBR if that's the way they all go...

Does anyone know if the patents are up on belts. I know that years ago H-D had the belt tooth configuration patented so when Kawasaki started putting belts on their middle weight bikes the belt teeth were different than the H-D ones. The original patents should be up but they could have been up dated.

We could also be seeing chains because the sportbike model "R"? should have a chain and it might not be practical to have a different final drive at this time.

You know Syonyk you may be right on those numbers being crank to rear wheel as I can't recall the exact article and where I read it. It also seems as there is no exact numbers out there, no real world controlled test because the numbers do vary greatly but the ones I've seen all still show belts as being a more efficient solution for transferring power. And your right about chains allowing for a more practical change of final gear ratios through a simple and inexpensive sprocket change as opposed to the more expensive pulley drives.

I believe 46champ may be right on the money concerning why the new Buells may be going to chain (aside from the more practical racing since of it), it may very well come down to a patent issue more so than just the practicality of it. Although I've been noticing some of the new electric bikes are using a belt/pulley set up. I also believe that maybe the general demographics that Buell may now be going after are just not yet ready or educated about the benefits of a belt drive system. And I know some well argue that they have had a bad experience with the use of belts but trust me I think most of us can attest to the same with chains. I have over 21k miles on my original belt with out any maintenance or fail but my brother's xbr9 failed early on but only due to a bracket that failed and cut the belt. So I guess what I'm saying is...if you ride long enough on either set up you'll most likely experience some kind of down time but oh how nice it is to get there with minimal worry or maintenance. But that's just me I'm biased when it comes to belts for general riding on my nearly 100hp/100lbs of torque monster that I love to ride.

This is the only forum I know where a discussion about a new bike model we have all been waiting for could get hi-jacked in favor of the worn out discussion of belt versus chain?? Who would've thought! ... LOL

No news is good news. Probably because those who do actually know anything are honorably upholding their non-disclosure agreements with EBR.

I know nothing new for sure, but I'm fairly sure we all want to see the new models when the Company is ready to do it right with dealers set up all over the country.

That said, I'm kinda hoping to see a spectacular EBR display with something other than promises at the Long Beach IMS show this weekend, although I haven't seen the EBR logo at the bottom of the various IMS announcement emails (don't know what that means).

"During the Dealer Expo weekend AIME (coincidentally?) distributed two press releases announcing that both Yamaha and Erik Buell Racing (EBR) will be attending AIMExpo in an official capacity. While Yamaha will not be conducting its national dealer meeting at AIMExpo, the company will reveal new models at the show along with its entire 2014 line-up, using the event to interact with dealers and customers. EBR will be hosting its dealers as well as displaying 2014 products."
