Yes, this news is presently a hot item on several racing boards this morning! The info comes from an unidentified spectator at the 200 Saturday. Though there is no name or other forms of ID listed, we are told that the fellow was the "father of a Buell racer", which certainly means the story is legit. According to him, the decision was already made that, "If the Buells failed at Daytona, the entire program would be stopped by Harley", and "delivery of the remaining RRs would happen only sometime next year, if at all".

It sure is nice to get the inside scoop!

I think you should buy him a copy of WELL MADE IN AMERICA.

The people who approved and supported this program are not fair weather wimps who run home whining the first time something doesn't go their way.

Buell, simply by being there, did more for DAYTONA and HD, than any other single event/person/machine since John Britten wheelied down the back straight.

Court, I saw that wheelie, I also always said Harley should have bought all the Brittens and painted them orange and black. We would have had a winner for at least a couple of years !

Thats the kind of rumor that superbike planet et al will eat right up.
Never mind the fact that it is pure fabrication, and wishful thinking
on their part.
Willie G's presence in Buell colors was a powerful statement about
the motor-companies level of commitment.

I got back last night from Sunny FLA...

Its ashame but thats racing. My switch to racing a Buell has been the steepist learning curve yet, not riding the bike just keeping it together.

Ducati was/is the bike to beat in World Superbike, here in the US they have been spotty at best with a fair share of DNF's There still gridding bikes. The season starts now as the Daytona 200 is nothing like it used to be and is more of a novelty and following a tradition then a roadrace.

The ONLY thing I see that is negative is Buell has now raised the bar by allowing the Metric teams to build on a similar platform (Race only bike based on a street bike) Next year the XBRR will be knocked into the stone ages if the Overseas companies hold a grudge.

On a personal note I would have liked to have seen 4 American twist grippers on the grid over 2 Europeans, 1 Canadian & Mike as the only American - But - I fully understand because of the "X-Files" nature of the R&D of the XBRR and Buells popularity overseas.

The real racing now begins, Barber may be one of the best venues to see the XBRR in action. I dont know if McWilliams is going to be the hired gun for the season (I like and respect him fine) but what Buell needs is someone hungry and on the edge. McWilliams has had his day and is a great rider, but the XBRR is screming for someone with something to prove....

That is an INCREDIBLY accurate statement. BUELL RACING has the full support of HD and, regardless of if you remember or not, Harley-Davidson KNOWS how to race.

Truer words were never said Court. Harley has been racing since before some of the metric companies were even dreamt about. H-D has probably forgotten more about racing than these people will ever know.

Bob

I also remember the Britten being wheelied through the entire horseshoe by Andrew Stroud.

Hello Court.

Do you remember the time WE tried to wheelie a VR1000 at Road America? (1997)

Of course, we were sitting in the pits, but that is another matter.

It wasnt that long ago that HD held the longest record of wins for racing in the US. I get a kick out of the chapter in the "Britten" book when he DNF'd at Daytona due to a .50 cent connector.

I had a bum weekend at Loudon when I couldnt get standard thread bolts anywhere at the track, I improvised only to have the shifter fall off mid race... not fun. Lesson learned BRING MORE SPARES.....

And while on the HD thang, I would absolutely love throwing a leg over the new Destroyer for a 1/4 mile.....

(to stay on topic Buell Racing is here to stay)

God, they just don't give up. I bet the next thing we'll be hearing is how Harley will be closing Buell now because of this. Sigh... I get tired of this crap.

>>>how Harley will be closing Buell now because of this.

Fear not, we've tread that road.

Some of the same folks, in 1998, gave us the scoop, based on "reliable insider info" that Harley-Davidson was closing Buell and buying KTM.

Hey. . . there are folks here who listen, so expect the "3 card monty posse of motorcycling". The same kids who taunted you on the playground just grew up.

Buell Racing will be around and will achieve some notable successes.

By the way, I'm sure some of you recall the lecture TEAM ELVES took from the Moto Guzzi and BMW guys about the audacity of saying we could break THEIR record.

Talk, ladies and gentlemen, is cheap.

Consider the fact that at least two of the RR's finished enough laps to have finished a sprint race. Just a thought. Sometimes I have some good ones. Butch

quote:

Court, what can I do to promote and ensure the future of Buell Racing?

Too many e-mails for me to answer off line, so let me tell you what *I* did, yeah, it's just my personal opinion.

  • I wrote a Thank You note to Mr. Jon Flickinger; arguably the best friend Buell and Buell owners have ever had. At long last a true corporate exec with smarts and the cajones to have faith in the talent he leads.

  • I went to the Warr's website, write them and thanked them and bought 2 (ouch...the exchange rate) of the MeWilliams race shirts.

  • I wrote the AMA Pro Racing people and told them how pleased I was to see DAYTONA back on track to once again be one of the world's premier race events.

  • I wrote a letter to:

Mr. James L. Zeimer
President and Chief Executive Officer
Harley-Davidson Motor Company
3700 West Juneau Avenue
Milwaukee, WI 53208

and basically said that of all the companies with great racing histories, all pale in comparison to the legend of Harley-Davidson. I truly appreciated what Harley-Davidson has done, welcome home to where you belong. . . RACING.

I also told him what a visible show of support and their commitment it was seeing Willie G. and Nancy Davidson in Buell race gear cheering on the team. Willie is not a "toss in the towel" sort of a guy and has racing in his blood.

So....while the naysayers argue with each other, I'd urge each of you to

MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

And most of all thanks to you, the folks who have made Buell an American success story.

You might want to send a note to the Daytona Speedway too, because if it was not for them, the 200 would not be a Formula Extreme race.

If the "nearly 20%" increase in attendance is accurate (is that Thursday thru Saturday, or Saturday only?) there is NO WAY they will let the AMA ban the XBRR from the class.

The AMA is always being accused of being under the control of Honda, or HD, or Suzuki or whoever has a competitive advantage at the time, but THE SPEEDWAY trumps them all.

Jose':

I need your help. You're as up on racing as anybody we have.

Can you:

  • Check on attendance this year and last?
  • Get us contact info for the proper folks at Daytona International Speedway?

We're onto something here.

Thanks,
Court

I got my Warrs Jeremy McWilliams shirt yesterday, I only ordered it on Friday.

I also received my Fuell at the same time , a happy coincidence.

I only wish it had been dry on Sunday so I could give the Uly a blast to celebrate the Daytona efforts
