Cool new video showing testing preparations (but no on-track footage unfortunately). Nice soundtrack too:

Yea, that really would have been the icing on the cake, if they'd have shown about 60 seconds more video with the bike going out on the track complete with audio.

They blew it!
They should have used a modified Blast motor for a starter instead of a Honda motor!
They really should have had some "motor music".

nope, Bluzm2

it's perfect. we have a use for Honda motors...to start our Buells.

I certainly wouldn't race one with the attitude they've been showing over rules they approved.

I agree, they need a starter engine with more guts than that thing. That little Honda starter rig could barely muster the cojones to crank the big Buells over. Rumor is they had to put the bikes in 5th gear and get the rear wheel spinning up to like 80 mph just to get an XBRR to kick over.

that's similar to most starter motors. the mass of the rear wheel has to really be flying to overcome the inertia of the bike's motor.

ours is an 8.5hp techumseh. I imagine it is even harder to do with the magnesium wheels than with our stock aluminum wheels.

The other route would be with a reduction gear assembly to give the starter motor more torque, but that makes the starter cart more complex
than it really needs to be. We considered a jack shaft/chain reduction, a planetary, or a cvt, but in the end it didn't seem to really be worth the hassle,
at least not right now. I'll be looking around at daytona for some other designs for ideas.

It would have been nice if we could have heard the bike running, I guess that is why we are all going to Daytona. Major tease.

We are using a startmachine built from an anglegrinder, working on the most bikes good because of the ratio. If somebody need detailed pictures give me a mail. But I am out of the office next week.

Turn,
I love the twist grip!
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking!
Even the starter motor would sound cool!
It would leave the Honda starters feeling totally inadaquate.
Very cool (the RR link and the Blast starter.)

The things I like about the Blast starter are the clutch, and variable drive ratios (gears)

However, I already had a barely broken in snow blower that had been given to me sitting in my garage.
Total cost out of pocket for me to build my start cart was around $60-70. Most of that was for
the wheels, and tire, and a little extra tubing for the frame.
If someone wanted to give me a blast motor expressly for this purpose I would not hesitate for a second to do it.

If I had to go out and buy a motor I would probably look for something like a 50cc scooter with a CVT.
Those are usually cheap, everything is mounted on the swing-arm, just rigidly attatch that to a dolly at the right height.

That looks nice Jens, should be portable too. I have a big angle grinder in my shop I hardly ever use...
I'll PM you for more details. Thanks for the idea.

That Ducati starter made me laugh really hard, what a rip off , keep it up ! That was great ! I'm riding down from Atlanta Tuesday of bike week , hope to see and hear the XBRR run, nothing sounds better than a big twin on the high banks.

No one recognizes any of the folks in the video?

Is that Kevin Cameron there in one shot?

Who is the racer standing behind the bike in full leathers?

Hi,

here are some pic from a maker of this kind of starting machines.

http://www.paddock-shop.com/page.asp/958.htm

We use the same construction with the chainsliders modified. When I have seen it first time I had not much trust in that construction for our big V2. Thinking that it work well on a 4 cylinder but not on our Buell Racebikes. After 2 years of using it 10-12 Raceweekends per year always 2-3 bikes at the start, here is our experience:

-It works on XB and Tubeframers up to 12,5:1 CR perfect. Higher CR I never tested. Starting in 2nd gear.

-In the beginning I was thinking, that it could be a problem that it dont operates without external power. Our experience in european paddocks is that there is always power to operate the machine. In the theoretical moment when the engine dies at the start you also dont have the fuelburning startermachine or, if they are still there, you use the machine from one of the competitors.

-The construction is collapsable, light and easy to maintain.

-Our Racebikes starting very well, so we need to start never longer than 10 seconds. If you let the angle grinder (we have a cheap chinese one) run for longer than 30 seconds it start to smoke and you have to take a 5 minute break. When you use a very good grinder that is gone.

-A problem in the beginning was the power supply, were you need a 16 A (in Europe) fuse in the system. We have 220 V and in all paddocks also 380V three phase current (rotary). These power outlets are highfused. So we use a simple 2 phase adapter to come on our 220V. Since than we never had fuse problems. Maybe you can use also an electronic "starting current limiter" (sorry didīt know the correct word) between the grinder and the net.

-Over the last 2 year we started also several foreign bikes, like BMW, Ducatis, Guzzis etc. They all started.

-The chaindrive need a bit care and maintanance, but in the 2 years it never failed.

-Because of security reasons we always disconnect the machine after the start, because the foot operated floorstarter in combination with that open running chain/sprocket construction makes a nice bonechopper.

-The last and for some racers biggest point: You can operate it as the rider by yourself without any assistance!

If really nobody offer this construction in the USA, somebody have to take this job. Thats waterjetcutted/lasered aluminiumplates, 2 aluminium castors, some bearings, 3 sprockets,a chain, a footswitch and an angleginder.

We can deliver this machine for 590,00 Euro plus transport, but that make no sense because of different current, plugs etc. An American have to take care about that.

Jens
