We had a thread going on this blurb posted a Superbikeplanet about a month ago:

http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2005/Dec/e/n051212b.htm

Nobody seemed to come up with any info back then. Perhaps this was testing with pre-production XBRR's? Sure seems like some info would have leaked out about it by now since the XBRR has been unveiled.

The best theory that comes to mind was pre-production testing with McWilliams and Ciccotto. As far as it being "infamous" or Dean Adams' "but it all ended in tears" we still don't know. Perhaps Terry from Hals can fill us in.

Road racing world has the details on this. Apparently they were testing
experimental single row primary chains at daytona.
These failed. repeatedly. They ended up returning to the triple row chains.

It was theorized by the engineers that it was a "chain control issue"
and the chains were jumping off the sprockets during down shifts.

Very interesting. I can see where the existing triple row primary chains add a lot of effective rotating mass to the crankshaft. A lighter primary chain would have many of the same advantages of a lighter crankshaft. I wonder if they've considered a belt for the primary?

My guess is they are thinking it would need to be too wide and would add rotating mass at the clutch hub and sprocket, negating the benefits of the belt mass reduction...

I don't know though.

Yes, but it is my understanding, or how the subject was covered to me when I asked, "At race RPM the friction a belt creates against the idler/tensioner in such a short, confined length of run tends to make the belts fail rapidly."

So then you go on to ask "But they use belts in primaries for dragbikes..." and the answer is "True, but dragbikes don't do 20 laps at a time do they?" They also tend to be open primaries when used in dragracing.

They use belt cam drives in NASCAR engines. Probably less power involved though.

That is just the main power point driving an auxillery gear, its not trying to transfer 150+hp to the ground.

If they won't show us any pics - you have to find your own.

http://www.buell-racing.com/

Go to "GALERIE"
Go to "Neuvorstellung Buell XBRR"

No action shots, but you will see McWilliams onlooking in his Proton leathers.

Enjoy

Jscott,

Cool find! BTW, does some racing personality other than Jack Roush wear a hat? (note the last photo) Hmmm....

Thanks

All this super secret stuff is killing me

Wasn't Roush Racing involved in the design of the VR1000's heads?

I've read in several places that they had some sort of involvement with that engine.

I think Carrol Shelby wears a hat like that but I don't think that's Carrol.

Yeah... but that "XBRR" seems to be pre-wind tunnel testing or something...

Look at the picture of the "mystery man" in the pictures from last homecoming (the famed "yellow shirt" in the past several days ago. . . now look two notches to the left of Erik.

This ENTIRE team, boys and girls, is made up of some HEAVY DUTY talent.

: )

Wow early development photos and you are lucky those have been posted. I'm in two.

The "cat in the hat" is not Jack, it's somebody else.
