Two great articles in the newest issue of Roadracing World. Lots of info on the Daytona tests and an outstanding article about Erik's plan for the bike and his motivation for pursuing "The Dream".

Nine pages of must read articles!!

Looks like they WILL have quick change set-ups for daytona pit stops.
The parts will even be available at your local Buell dealer.

Buell receives kind of a backhanded compliment in this issue on p.23 also.

This is an article comparing the new SV650 and Kawasaki's new Ninja 650R.

And I quote,"The new Keihin digital fuel injection and two 38mm throttle bodies, and features a fully adjustable automatic idle. Spent gasses exit through a two-into-one, stainless-steel Buell style under engine exhaust."

I'd sure liked to have been in Kawasaki's P.R. office when they read that comparison!! : )

One excerpt that I found particularly interesting...

quote:

This single ZTL brake setup has been tested back-to-back by Ciccotto and former F-USA Unlimited Superbike Champion / Buell test rider Shawn Higbee against dual-rotor set-ups using Nissin Superbike-spec six piston calipers and has been found to provide enough stopping power to race at Road America (the most demanding track for brakes in America) while producing less inertia and resistance to turning.

Go Buell ZTL!!!

Apples and oranges.

How about comparing the ZTL against dual Brembo setups that racers actually use in racing, instead of Nissin calipers that they don't?

I guess we only have another month and we'll see them compared for a 200 mile race. I would say Daytona is as demanding as Road America. RA has a long straight, but half of it is uphill. The banked turn of Daytona at 180mph going into the infield at 60mph is pretty challenging also. And you have to do it successfully 68 times in a row.

If the ZTL can do it at the Daytona 200, I'll be a believer.

Actually, Road America is the most demanding track on brakes in North America. Daytona in a ways back, but keep up the positive attitude!!

The XBRR can only mean one thing....I'll be trading in my XB12R when all this technology makes it to the street.

If the Buell ZTL brake works well and doesn't fail or fade during the Daytona 200 mile race, I'll believe in its effectiveness compared to the dual radial Brembo competition that it will be up against.

Do you understand me now?

I don't believe that your intent was misunderstood, just your logic. I believe the brakes will be the last thing that fails if the bike is destine to run into issues. I suppose if they don't finish well, you'll have proven your point, in your own mind. Oh, BTW , what do you think that adjuster cable is that pokes out near the clutch? It's a brake (front) adjuster. ALL front brakes begin to fade during the race. But believe me when I say I hope your question is answered either way.

The ZTL2 has a small fraction, in comparison to the visually stunning, yet mechanically complex, dual Brembos.

I'd opt for the Brembos as an option on a Ford truck and for a street bikes...just based on looks alone.

But when it comes time that the primary purpose of the brake is to stop the motorcycle Buell research can not be ignored.

Daytona will be an amazing event and a true "POC" event.

That's better Jima4media, plenty of wiggle room in that statement.
"If there is any failure of the Buell racing effort it can be construed that it is the fault of whatever is different from the Japanese teams." (paraphrase)

It seems all Buell discussions must arrive at ZTL.

Court,

I'd never buy brakes for their visual appeal, either for the street or for the track. Your brakes are what could save your life, and you have to depend on their functionality.

Rocketsprink,

On a 200 mile race as tough as the Daytona 200 is, it is not unreasonable to think that brakes may fade. It is pretty easy to spot if they do. The rider will be slowing down and blowing corners. The rotors may be glowing red.

I think the ZTL2 brake will end up doing fine, but the XBRRs still won't win because of them, or without Brembos. It is not purely a matter of brakes.

Engine reliability, horsepower, weight, and streamlining seem to be under control on the XBRR.

I think the biggest factor will be riders.

Take Miguel Duhamel and Jeremy McWilliams at the beginning of the race and have them switch bikes. Could Duhamel win on a Buell? I think so. Could McWilliams win on a Honda? I don't think so.

Picotte? Nope.
Ciccotto? Nope.
Penzkofer? Nope.

>>>>I'd never buy brakes for their visual appeal, either for the street or for the track.

I wouldn't buy them strictly for that purpose. . . but the red Brembo calipers look mightly cool.

I generally, for precisely the reasons you cite, kinda fiddle with my vehicle brakes. I used special rotors and calipers on all my SHO's and on the truck.

I take my guidance from Donald Sutherland in Kelly's Hero's...."we like to think we can get out of trouble faster than we got in", when he was explaining the modified high speed reverse gearing.......

The Buells will do fine. The brakes are perfectly suited to the motorcycle.

See ya'll at the track!

Jim I think you understimate the worth of McWilliams experience. He has ridden everything and won and a much higher levelthan DuHamwl has ever attempted. Daytona is a very odd place but he will figure it our in a hurry. If the bike can stay together and running right he will get it around Daytona as fast as anyone. Anyone who can keep the throttle pegged down Bray Hill will have no trouble with the banking.

And there in you have the truth.

McWilliams is a rare commodity in motorcycle racing these days. He can race anything. How many can say they've won many TT's on big four strokes and won a 250GP.

I'm still gob smacked Warrs have secured his services - if they do.

McWilliams won a couple of two-stroke races back in the day, but what has he done lately? His is 41, older than Duhamel. He has never raced at Daytona.

What has Duhamel done lately? Won Daytona 200 5 times.

Personally I think Duhamel is fading fast.

He wants to grab the Daytona record that Russell currently holds before retiring.

Last year factory Honda beating up on the privateers was a disgrace.

They saw it as a shot at an easy Daytona win. A great many fans were not impressed.

Jim, you mean aside from winning the 250GP world championship in 2001, or putting the Proton KR3 on pole, Australia 2002.

Yeah, Jeremy's past his best for sure when it comes to going up against Duhamel. Incidentally, does Duhamel posses a passport, never mind an international race license?

<a couple of two-stroke races back in the day>

That is a nice understated way to discribe a GP World Champ.

The man is fast, smart, not only knows how to help the engineers get the bike set up right but how to get the most out of it and being a 4 times Irish Road Racing champion he's got big ones, those lads are nuts!
