Blake,

Comparing earlier MAC OS with OS X is akin to (staying on topic here) comparing Uly's to M2's. Different everything -- no comparison.

Cataract, Gentoo rocks, but has probably the steepest Linux learning curve. If you start hating on it then take a look Debian, maybe Xandros but they've started wanting money.

Go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Open Source

I just can't figure out why Jim didn't use BSD in his story

LOL - Well, it started out as a story about people wanting to rain on your parade. The topic has sort of evolved since my first post.

I was going to ride over the RedHat HQ and take a picture of the Uly in front of their sign to go with my post. But I was too lazy.

Jim,

I think it was a very insightful post indeed -- may be lost on the general public, but in this particular forum it rocks!

I have 3 passions in life (outside my lovely wife and 3 of the greatest kids that God's ever blessed anyone with) and they are weight lifting, creating/maintaining secure virtual worlds, and Buell motorcycles. You hit two of the three on one post. I'm totally digging this thread, but I am so IT co-dependent :-)

(if it continues to grow I'll start preaching about QNX too!)

Mac OS X v1 sucked too. Crash city.

Glad they finally got it right.

Posted by JimA -

"Then there is Mac OS X. Free Open Source BSD Unix. Macintosh look and feel. No worms, trojans, viruses, malware, and it runs on the latest Intel hardware as well. "

Now it all makes sense...

You still have one mouse button Jim?

Linux hasn't been the target of Virus attacks either, and you can upgrade the KERNEL w/o rebooting... You can run random data into any process you'd like just to see what happens...

All your OS are belong to Linux.

I have a two button mouse and a one button mouse.

Apple Computer makes both also, but the one I have now is made by MacMice.

I also run Yellow Dog Linux and Windows XP when I need to, in other windows on my iMac.

If you ever get tired of it, or you just feel like making a change, check out Debian
Downloading as I type this.
I liked Mandrake, mainly because of what you suggested, I don't change things often is why I stuck with Mandrake even after the change to Mandriva.
It's an easy OS, and with all I have to keep up with I didn't really want something with a steep learning curve, I tried Slackware once.

After reading this thread I'm beginning to think Buell should offer branded pocket protectors in the apparel line up!

"I guess what I'm saying is do you want a Honda Accord or a Yugo but, the Honda's free and the Yugo is a purchase -- no brainer from my point of view, but I have three kids in college (and their laptops aren't running Micro$oft either) and I'm forced to be prudent with my spending habits. "

So, um, what? I have no idea what you're saying. I would (and did) pick a Honda over a Yugo, especially if it were free. If you're implying Yugos are better than Honda, we'll have to just disagree.

"Fans of Micro$oft shouldn't be forced to put up with such a sorry product -- no flaming here folks that just my opinion and nothing, absolutely nothing, you say can change my position. "

No one should be forced to put up with inferior products. Still not related to Microsoft winning (thus far and discounting anything that's not already history) the largest share of the home computing market.

My point is that you're bashing a company on all levels and ignoring facts because they don't support your prejudiced view. I didn't say I liked Microsoft. I didn't say I approved of their technical or marketing decisions. I say they still managed to position themselves to become (at this time) the largest provider of PC software.

Sure, Apple could have done it. But they didn't. (And it could be argued that we'd be saying the same nasty things about Apples if they were forced to support all manner of hardware and software.)

Buell's aren't being picked on because the rest of the world hates them for no reason. They haven't positioned themselves right so far to win more market share.

"I've not even touched on the ethics of how Micr$oft helped push their market share either. Dirty pool is dirty pool and I don't care how many Rear Wheel Dollars you have. "

And that's what I'm talking about hating MS for playing the capitalist game. It's ok to get customers, but only if everyone likes the way you did it? It's ok to make a profit, as long as it's not 'too much'?

Apple's the underdog because they made the wrong decision early on? Linux is the savior because it's free? People don't buy Buells because they're different, not that they lack advertising, have maintenance issues, and no dealer support?

If it makes you happy to believe...

That would rule : ).

Anyway... VM's are everywhere : ). The real meat and potatoes comes in when you start comparing performance. Stability is another major concern of course, but at this point all three are pretty stable (well, I have to take the word of the Mac users). My windows box hasn't crashed since XP (Except for that blown capacitor thing...) and the only time I've ever had a Redhat box crash was when I was making an effort at it. That said, I try to stay on this side of the bleeding edge.

I can get around in Windows and Gnome/KDE pretty well but the UI on a Mac has always seemed just a little "funky" somehow. I really can't put my finger on it but it's enough to bother me every time I see one...

>It's ok to get customers, but only if everyone likes the way you did it?

There once was a company called Stac ...

Stac made compression software. MS liked it, entered into contracts to use it, got the source code .... then ended negotiations to use it .... then used the code in MS DOS 6.0 (giving the software away and ending Stac's market).

by the time the lawsuits were over, Stac was over.

Note MS did a -poor job of the code and 6.0 had a very short shelf life due in large part to how they implemented the compression software.

Same thing with IE.

They got a consortium together to design and implement standards for how a web page should be written and how a browser should interpret them. Once they had everyone on the bandwagon doing one thing, they jumped ship and changed how IE worked. Due to the fact that they had a HUGE portion of the market share in that arena, all the other browsers acted funny and it cost some companies more than they had...

CD-Burning... Same as Stac.
MP3 Players... Same thing (Winamp literaly SOUNDS better than WMP)
Don't even get me started with Office Vs. OpenOffice...

About six months ago I gave a PIII-1133. I loaded Fedora 4 on it (a distro of Linux that's a LOT like RedHat : )). She uses it for school, he uses it to browse the web. After a couple short sessions of me explaining that she needs to save the file as a MS type so her teacher could see it, it all works flawlessly and they like it. She also had to realize that there's actually this thing called an e-mail client and she didn't need to use the web access provided by her ISP and it would give her a lot more flexibility with e-mails.

Both of them groaned that they didn't have Windows but I told them that I'd get fired if I gave them a license. They both set about poking around and learning and they love it now.

What! Everyone doesn't have one?
The secret level is accessed this way.
1)burn ISO image
2)Alt+Ctrl+Delete
3)At prompt type knoppix en
4)Enjoy Knoppix Linux without installing anything.
Easy peasy!

Laura,

I, for some strange reason, thought this thread was about Linux?

My personal Linux choice is ubuntu. It's debian based, but much more recent/active development is done with Ubuntu.

I use a Mac Mini at work as an ftp/email/web/file server. I also use a Dual G4 mac for everyday use at home.

Unfortunately, the Cad/Cam world is going to be stuck on Windows for some time to come. Yes there are *SOME* Cad/Cam apps for Linux, but not any viable for our applications currently.

Bikergoddess has it right.

Sure, Linux is great, but I didn't spend $5000 on the uber-computer to stare at a screen with nothing on it and do word processing. I'm a gamer, and everything runs on Windows. I'm no real windows fan but I go where the games are. My solution is I run it stripped down as bare as possible.

Intel 875PBZLK mobo, P4EE 3.06Ghz, 4GB Corsair DDR400/ECC, Matrox Parhelia 512 video on 3x 21" Sony monitors at 3840x1024x85hz, and 2x WD 74GB 10000rpm drives striped in a RAID array.

well it was uber like 2 years ago but it was the best I could get at the time.
