Under engine fuel tank provides a low forward center of mass. Since the fuel tank is closer to the center of mass,

changing fuel loads have less effect on overall balance.

This makes no sense to me.
I could tell the difference between what muffler I was using by how the bike handled.

I think that Honda tried that arrangement on one of its GP bikes of the 1970s and the thing was a real problem. Help me, somebody. Didn't Fast Freddie try to ride it and really couldn't make it do any thing?

Honda ELF 500CC GP bike. It had Fuel Starvation as one of its problems, but it had MANY problems other then that.

Honda used an underfuel tank on one of the first NSR500s. It didn't turn worth a damn. I was at HRC in Japan a few years later, and my hosts were showing me an elaborate Ono Sokki pendulum-type instrument to measure a motorcycle's roll inertia. I asked if they had acquired it after that NSR had been designed. They smiled sheepishly and said, "Yes."

Roll inertia is one of the most important factors in motorcycle handling, and you increase it if you put major masses too far away from the center of gravity -- like 37 pounds of fuel and a couple of pounds of tank under the engine. Lowering the center of gravity this way can be fine for a drag racer, but doesn't work for a bike that has to turn quickly. That said, a lower center of gravity is probably good -- you just have to achieve it while squeezing all the major masses low and tight together for low roll inertia. You have an example of this with, say, the fuel system on Buell XBs.

Lay-down singles such as the Moto Guzzi GP bikes and the more recent Ducati Mono probably have the lowest roll inertias out there, and everyone who has ridden them talks about their maneuverability. However, it's difficult to get the kind of fore-aft weight distribution you'd like with this design, with the major engine masses pushed far aft.

On a relatively light bike, wouldn't you rather have the fuel tank below a light engine than above it, assuming its distance from the c.o.g. is roughly equivalent in either location?

Anybody watch Monster Nation last night? I was catching bits and pieces between watching election results.

Did anyone see the chick with the Buell M2? It was just coming on when my wife decided to burn herself in the kitchen (that's why I usually do the cooking: D ) I was just wonder if the Buell got any good publicity for the piece. Also, what "episode"?

Steve_a IIRC the underengine fuel tank on the old Elf sat below the midline of the axles, whcih your comment seems to back, from looking at the pics of the Roehr Machine bike, the bottom of the fuel tank appears to be right at the midline of the axles. Me I am more interested in the 500CC Two Stroke design they built awhile back.

Yep; Foghorn Leghorn is way too controversial. He tends to get angry and personal, even if the initial comment was (I hope) intended as a joke. ; )

Okay, I'll stick with less controversial cartoon characters from now on, with maybe the occasional Dilbert thrown in to keep people on their toes.

04' XB12R Exhausts? Does anyone have a suggestion for me on purchasing an aftermarket exhaust for my Firebolt? I know that Buell has a complete race kit available but would like to know the benefits and drawbacks of going with an aftermarket kit before I plop down the money on Buell's system. Thanks for the info.

You might get a little better response by posting this on the XBoard. That said, I recommend the Drummer if you are interested in sound and small gains everywhere. If you want power on the top, the Jardine seems to be the way to go but it seems to drop off pretty bad below about 3200 RPM's. That would be fine for highway riding and when you're "havin' a little fun" but around town I run about 2K on my 12 and I don't wan't it neutered at that RPM range. Personally, I think that maybe the stock ECM, stock pipe and a Techlusion may be the best way to go. I'll be buying a Drummer though. I have to have that sound : ).

Just got that "we want to buy your bike" scam email. Interestingly, Google Mail intercepted it, and dropped it in the spam filter automatically, so they must be very well known at this point.

Man they sure hired one hell of an advertising team! I got the cd too. Any Buell employees reading this? My wife sat through the whole thing and remarked several times how cool it was, and for a non-moto wife that is a big deal. Cool.

How do you get on Buell's mailing list?
