From the Speedzilla Duc board...ouch}

Jeff Wood rode a BCM Motorsports-prepped Ducati 900 Supersport to victory in the FUSA Thunderbike race at the Loudon Classic this past weekend. I was not only Wood's first appearance in the class but also the first win for the air-cooled Ducati. Wood and his Ducati dominated both practice and qualifying all weekend long and secured the win over Buell-mounted Bryan Bemisderfer and Suzuki-mounted Rick Doucette.

"The bike was really easy to ride and the race was a lot of fun" Wood remarked after the race. "It's very similar to the bikes we teach the Penguin Racing School on every week. I think that after this race even more people will realize how good these bikes are for not only Thunderbike but also for all the CCS lightweight classes."

Wood won the LRRS Lightweight Supersport and Thunderbike races earlier this season on a completely stock Ducati 900 Supersport, prompting him to put together his FUSA Thunderbike effort for the Loudon Classic. More information on racing Ducati Supersport bikes is available from the Penguin Roadracing School.

Interesting XB9S/XB12S Review
__________________________________________________________________

XB deals in the North East:

Around here (MD, VA, DC, DE), both the VROD's and XB's seem to be the ones with dealer incentives, everything else except leftover 03 Sportsters are selling pretty well from what I can tell.

Chainsaw, thanks! It's a lot of work, that page was my first real webpage, so it was a real learning experience. Steve (turnagain) gets 99% of the credit for that website.

Kevyn,
Wood won the 2002 Loudon Sportbike race on an XB12R. That was up against a gaggle of Japanese Supersport riders. He is a good rider. Good to see Ducati getting back into the mix with their air cooled twins.

My thoughts on the custom painted Buells is that they are Liberace bikes. All they need now is feather boa.

Ruined.

That's funny... (The review)

Maybe I'm just inexperienced (and I've never ridden an "S" model) but I have absolutely ZERO complaints about my XB12R. Sure people might say that's because I spent a pretty penny on it and I don't want to admit that I could have gotten something "better" for the price but I disagree... Vehemently even. I love this bike. I think Buell should however put different tires on it stock but I had no complaints before I swapped mine. Sure it required pressure to hold a line but it never even began to bother me. I don't get it.

If anyone would like I can post my list of reviews. I think I've saved the url to all of them I've found including the ones in which the writer wasn't too pleased (two now).

Eric Wood won the Sportbike Race on a Kosco XB9R in 2002, Jeff Wood won the Thunderbike race this year on his Ducati 900SS. Their dad, Jerry wood, finished fourth in the Thunderbike race this year on a Ducati Supermono.

M1, start a quick topic and list them all there, we should have all these reviews compiled somewhere.

I guess having Wood racing on the BCM Ducati is similar to taking Aaron to Bonneville; he's gonna win something.

BCM Motorsports has a fantastic reputation and following in the NA Duc scene. It was very nice to see a 900SS win! The technical details and modifications will be very interesting!

Hi guys,
I have a problem and cannot figure it out, maybe one of you buell guru's can help me. I have my 2000 S3 with the following changes; race ecm, forcewinder intake, powercommander 2- during a ride a couple of weeks ago I got deep into reserve and it started to run badly, I filled up and continued the ride but she wouldn't pull past 4k rpm without bogging, ran okay cold until warmed up then the same problem. Tps reset, I thought, although riding in 5th gear between 2500-3500 rpm didn't seem to help. I thought it was the powercommander not letting the tps reset. Fast forward to this weekend, got a Wileyco muffler, installed it, sounds great-disconnected the powercommander and rode, same problems, seems to be running way to lean over about 3750rpm. Any guesses? I will be taking it to a local speed shop on Tuesday, they have a dyno but I don't know if they have any experience with powercommander programming, the closest tuner according the the website is in Huachuca city about an hour and a half from my house.
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I want to be up and running by the torque fest run July 16th.
Thanks,
art.....

ArtFul,
Call and talk to Ron at PowerPlus on Kolb. He's knowledgeable about Buells. He put a Power Commander II in my X-1 and it worked great. He's Buell friendly and I bet he can help you out. Get your bike in early though-he's backlogged. If he doesnt work out for you , Gary at H-D Performance on Richey and Ft. Lowell is good. He has some Buellers working for him as mechanics. I've had him do several things for me and have been very satisfied.
Good luck
Al

Art,
Go to Autozone and get yourself a Bosch 12014 O2 sensor. its a direct bolt on and should tke you 10 minutes to change. It might solve your problem and even if it doesn't it only will have cost you about $15.

forgot to mention, also got the high performance 02 sensor from dynajet, so I don't think that is the problem.

I just couldn't figure out where to post this...knoweldge vault, XB board, quickboard....oh well, here will do.

As many of you that were at homecoming know, my XB9S died as I came off the track parade laps, then got me back to the BRAG hospitality suite, then died again. We diagnosed it there to be a break in the wire harness.

Finally got around to fixing it, and this is what I found. Buell uses a wiring harness that uses copper fusing technology for making multi-wire splice points within the harness. But this, I mean they take multiple wires (in this case, three) and terminate them together by putting the three stripped ends (in this case, two from the ignition switch, frontside, to one to the fuse block, rearside), and put those ends under pressure and heat to create a single splice. No solder, basically copper spot welding, but under pressure (similar to powdered metal technology). They then slide a thermal adhesive laden heat shrink splice over the fused bare area and cover the whole thing up in a watertight, strain relieved splice. Pretty neat, actually. Electronics packaging was my previous gig, I can really appreciate how very cool that harness technology is.

Unfortunately, I'm guessing that there is a clamp on the wires on both sides of the splice to properly retain the wires in position while the fusing occurs. I'm guessing that on my particular harness, the clamp missed a little on the single wire going back to the fuse block and crushed the wire, causing a notch, which eventually led to the wire breaking under fatigue. Since it is the main ignition switch wire (the RED one), breaking it is the same as turning off the switch, taking the whole bike down. Turning the handlebars one way pushed the wires together, bike ran. Turning the handlebars the other way pulled the fractured wires apart, killing all.

Good as new now, soldered splices, heat shrunk, retaped, etc. Only had to remove the flyscreen, headlights and horn bracket to get to everything.

The wire:
wire

The Buell cool splice, opened up. That wire is where I cut it, the actual break in the wire was about 1/4" further down in the harness from where I cut it, just past the curve in the wire in the above photo.

Fullpower,

The 620 will handle so well she won't believe she wasted so much time on a Sportster. Power delivery? You'd have to open the intake, rejet and get a good full/header exhaust and some slip-ons to take advantage of what's there.

If she's taken with the Monster's, try for a nice used 750 or 900. She'll appreciate the upgraded suspension adjustability, the additional torque and for sure the handling.

There's lots of Duc Monsters out there to choose from.

Depending on her size, consider the Mulitstrudel...

Steve,
Not as hard as you might guess, for that particular wire. You see, that wire turns EVERYTHING on and off. Even at the track that day, Mike (Coolice), Dyna, and I (and a few other Buellers who can't resist a good technical challenge) were able to narrow it down to within a couple inches within the harness. Wiggle here, everything comes on, wiggle there, nothing... Once I pulled the harness wrap, I was able to duplicate that except on specific wires, and I highly suspected the red wire to begin with because of how much was affected. Once I cut the splice out, and then tried to strip the wire, 3/4" of the the whole conductor just pulled right out of the jacket.

Other conductors broken in the same way might be much more difficult to track down. Snail (Paul Starkweather) had that happen on an injector wire. THAT would be a bear to diagnose.

Ducati 620? consider SV 650.

Cheap as dirt, cant walk out the door without tripping over SV650 parts. Upgradable as all snot, in every aspect.

If ya gotta have a Duck, go for it, but I'd take a long look at an SV.

i agree the SV650 is a fine motorcycle, but it is for my wife, so we have aesthetic considerations also: the ducati is a sexy bitch, while poor little suzi was beaten with the ugly stick.
so is a valve adjust every 6000 miles as big deal? how long could a few desmo adjusters really take? it is only a 2 valve engine, so couldnt take too long, right? also they must be threaded adjusters, no way they would be shim in bucket stuff on an italian? please feel free to chime in with any comments re durability/reliability/comfort/driveability of the baby monster. thanks. dean

Fullpower, the valve adjustment is no big deal, you can do it at home in the garage with a few simple tools. The first one will be a learning experience, after that cake. There are several good Ducati websites that will walk you through the whole process with hints and tips to make it go smooth. Remember http://www.mbpducati.com/

Check out www.Ducati.com for the latest edition of the 620 and all the specs. Very nice bike with looks befitting a fine Italian bike, especially a classic Monster.

http://www.ducatisuite.com/ is probably a good place to start for mods you'll want to perform sooner.

http://www.ducatimonster.org/cgi-bin/ImageFolio3/imageFolio.cgi is probably the definitive Ducati Monster site.

She will really like riding her Monster. You will really enjoy riding her Monster. Good luck, great choice.
