Allright I need some more help. I just installed a new rear brake line on my S1 and I can't get the darn things to pump up. I have bled them like crazy but still nothing. Whats the secret to bleeding these things? Do I need to get a mighty vac pump or asomething like that?

BTW: I tried to post this to the KV but the brake section is closed?

Thanks Bartimus,
I want to remove the stock license plate/turn signal/brake light holder as well. Did you do the same, or just cut the darn thing shorter?

Blastard,
the previous owner had installed that plate bracket. it's real nice and simple. It is aluminum. (easy to straighten out too!) I'm sure they may have what your looking for at http://www.americansportbike.com
Or maybe someone else on this board knows where you can get the setup.

Buellidan,

Remove the caliper, raise it above the master, put a block of something inside the caliper so the piston won't move.

Pump the brake pedal a couple of times, hold it down, release the air in the caliper and close the bleeder before releasing the pedal. Repeat until fluid comes out.

Once you get fluid through the bleeder you can remount the caliper and finish bleeding to make sure all the air is out.

This is how I got mine done (and it took a while to figure out).

All the best.

Dan,get a large syringe and force the fluid back thought the caliper bleed screw watching the reservoir for all the nice air bubbles to stop,or if your in a bind and mad/frustrated/covered in brake fluid like I was the last time I did my front caliper, just use a plastic brake fluid bottle with a hose and squeeze it into the bleed screw.)P.S. this was after I bought one of those fancy effing Mity Vac dohickeys and it did NOT work on my front caliper.

Court:
Thanks for whatever it is that you are sending, I'll have the folks keep an eye out of it and clue me in on what it is once it arrives. I won't be 'home-home' for about another month and a half. And no, I can't say it was solely you that planted the idea of riding across the country, but I can say that the 'Lap of America' article that you posted and the 'who the hell is Court' thing on the Team Elves website spurred my thoughts. I always thought it would be an awesome adventure, and now that I see the support from people here, I know it can be done.

Ferris:
Thanks for your kind words as well, we'll definitely ride this summer.

I also have a Mity-Vac piece of shit..... Don't waste your money... Syringe or hand pump oiler with clear hose works much better... Go backwards bleed port on the caliper to the master cylinder....

Dan; I posted a lengthy syringe-style bleeding technique awhile back

Works much better than the Vac method for me.

Taking the caliper off and lifting it over the reservoir as Andy mentions is a good idea.

The Mity-Vac is actually a very nice piece of kit but it acts more like a syphon than a vacuum pump when bleeding brakes. Other applications, such as diaphragm actuated controls, it does a perfect job of testing. There is nothing finer for the price.

Back to brake bleeding. You might want to consider using a pressure pump attached to the master cylinder itself. This is by far the best way to bleed brakes, and hydraulic clutches, that suffer air lock or lack of bleed pressure.

Easiest way to perform this trick, and especially beneficial to repeat bleeding, is to acquire a Gunsons Eesi Bleed kit. It should be easy enough to adapt a 'spare' master cylinder cap from any machine you're working on to fit this tool. Once suitably adapted to fit the master cylinder you'll never have a problem bleeding brakes.

Rocket reminded me of another hint for brake bleeding; banjo bolts with bleeder nipples. Works especially well for the front master cylinder - you'll always have a bit of air stuck there. You can get the air out by loosening the banjo bolt slightly while keeping pressure on the brake lever. But the bleeder banjo works much easier.

Hello boys,

I apologize for not being around. It's been a tough couple of years, so I've kept pretty much to myself.

As much as I enjoyed the people down in Alabama, things just didn't work out as I had hoped (the owner of the Harley dealer I was working for actually had the store taken away from him by Harley!)

Still have the unsellable S1, but at least it's running nicely, although it's dying for a nice Penske (but then every Buell is dying for a Penske).

After working at stupid jobs for the last few years I've finally landed a real job working with incarcerated adolescents here in Jersey. Finally something that will make a difference.

As always, you guys in the Buell community are the warmist people I've had the pleasure to know. Here I was, gone for years and you all welcome me back as though I never left. Special, very special.

I look forward to seeing you all again.

Andy: Welcome Home !

>>>91 RS1200 (your 91 has standard conventional forks? 4 spd also?)

The 1990 RS1200 should be conventional, dual disc and 4-speed.

The 1991 RS1200 should be inverted, single disc and 5-speed.

The should, in the above statements is a HUGE SHOULD as variants were not unheard of.

Brakes -- I'll second Rockets suggestion . . . that tool allowed me to bleed the 31 Ford's juice brake conversion is about 10 minutes (withi a break for a beer), instead of the entire weekend effort it had been previously . . .. . great tool, pays for itself if you pay yourself minimum wage while bleeding brakes (which, next to color sanding paint has got to be the worst job in the garage!)

It's nice to be with friends again.

Pauli--what mail?

Court and Henrik--we need to catch up & soon.

Hans--I'm glad you're happy with the setup. I still do setups and still find it amazing how many people don't get it, even those who go to the racetrack. If I can be of any help...

All,
I have a co-worker heading to a conference in New Orleans tomorrow.
His conference and hotel is going to be right down in the thick of things for the Mardis Gras festivites.

He's looking for a good Cajun type restraunt that's not totally tourist and within a reasonable distance (no car).
A type place locals would go for good cuisine.

Any suggestions? Yes he's bringing a camara! ; )

Thanks

Brad

speaking of places to see on vacation, if I were in Italy for a week or so in late May, what shouldn't I miss? We'll probably be in Florence, Rome and Venice for at least a day each. We'll also be in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona) and maybe Lisbon over a 2 week period.
